What does your reception year child wear to school?

DD starts school in september, the school 'uniform' is grey skirt/pinafore/white top and wine red jumper cardi with school emblem on it, or a pink/red summer dress As she progresses she will wear a tie.

I am a bit confused about what the norm is to wear in sept? I have bought her cardigans rather than jumpers as she finds these easier to take off if too hot. I love the idea of her wearing a pinafore, but if so, what does she wear underneath? shirt? polo shirt? Or, will most of the others just wear skirt and shirt, if so, a polo shirt, or a blouse? and what type of skirt, a pleated one, a plain one? What about a summer dress? are these worn in september? It is still warm?

I am amazed at how much this is doing my head in. I keep going to buy some clothes for her, and get my head all spinny by the choice! I don't want her to look out of place!

Some girls do wear summer dresses for the first half-term, it can be quite warm in September.

When you say that the uniform includes a white top, do they specify what type of top?

Also, do you know any other children starting in September? It might be good to ask what they are getting.

i would go for a polo shirt as its easier for them to change for PE and a pinafore as its neater, nothing to come untucked.

Summer dresses are usually just worn during the summer term (after Easter). Cardigans look better with pinafores so I would go for a cardi.

It important to have her paractise getting dressed and undressed for PE beofre she starts school so you can work on any areas she finds difficult - like tights!!

no specification on what top, The girls I saw wore a mixture of blouses and polo shirts. The older girls where ties, but that is not til year 2 i think. I have also seen several girls in pinafores.

The school jumper options are : round neck/v-neck jumper or a fleece lined cardigan, which is what DD has, so, polo shirt? would that be ok?
I never knew deciding what a child wore to school on her first day would be so stressful!

Kittens what pe kit do I need to buy?! I was not given a list of anything like this, only the school uniform list, which told me what school emblem options I had, ie jumper/cardi etc, a book bag, hat etc.

Its not all Numbers and Letters is it?!!

pinafore with polo shirt and cardigan is the best option then? She looks lovely in all skirts, and she prefers skirts to dresses, so maybe I will buy her a mix of both, 3 pinafores and 2 skirts, polo shirts, and cardis. Once she is there, we can see what the others wear, and what she prefers to wear.

I am buying 5 lots in total as I am back at work so will get it all ready on a sunday, then it will all be hung up ready to just put on each morning, no having to sort out washing every other day, although only 2 cardis for now, as not sure if this was best option at the time. I will buy more.

Depends if it is a private or a state school. The private school uniforms are pretty prescriptive about the uniform, state school is a little more lenient about what is acceptable and what can be worn when.

itsjustafleshwound state school, but small, so I think I am more worried about her being the 'odd one out' if i don't get it right. I am surprised there was no list of what was acceptable to wear/info on PE kits etc.

I shall buy:

3 pinafores
2 skirts (pleated?)
5 polo shirts
3 more cardigans with school emblem on.
black shorts for PE kit.

What kind of t-shirt for PE? plain white? another polo shirt? Does she need plimsoles?

How about shoes?do they have to be black? She does not look fab in black, and its so Grown Up^!

Well, don't do what I did and leave buying the uniform til the day before school starts! (Not that you will as you are already thinking about it). Shockingly there was virtually nothing left, what on earth was I thinking?!

I would definitely say polo shirts rather than shirts, how is she with tights? Some of the girls in ds' reception class wore trousers, some didn't.

Worth also thinking about wellies as they like them to have dry shoes to come in with (at ds' school at least) - makes sense when they will be sitting on the carpet.

oh yes, wellies would be good, as sept is quite rainy isn't it, down here in Devon at least! I want to buy it all this week coming ideally as 1)i have the money as beginning of the month! and 2) as you stated, it will all be gone if I don't buy it now!. I am normally Last Minute Girl, but I want her first few days to be as smooth as possible for her, and me! I want her to feel confident, so want to get how she fits in with her peers right.

It depends on the child.

DD has
1x trousers
1x skirt
3-5x shirts (winter uniform)
1x tie (winter unifrom)
tights/socks in the correct colour

3-5x polo shirts (summer uniform)
3-5 summer dresses

2x school cardigans.

TBH she is quite tidy and rarely is 'dirty' when she gets home.

DS1 on th eother hand has a complete change of clothes everyday

Personally I wouldn't buy any PE kit yet.

In our school they tend not to do any PE for the frist few weeks.month/term and so they quite often grow out of it before it gets any use. You will also have time to sort out what she is supposed to have.

cece oh DD is definitely like your DS! She is quite a messy child, and I anticipate needing to change ALL her clothes daily, hence buying a weeks lot of everything. She wears trousers a lot, and is quite active, so maybe trousers would be good in time, however, she loves skirts and dresses so think she would be happy to wear these at first, for novelty .

DH said same as you about PE kit, no rush.

We were asked to NOT send reception girls in tights on PE days (even those who could put them on were too slow) and IME long socks always fall down, so you might want to have at least one pair of uniform trousers, particularly for the cold weather.

Trousers are also more protective for falls on concrete playground . . .

takver yes, thats a good point about falling over, I am sure after the first day or so we will change her into trousers she is fine with tights, but she insists on taking them off completely when she goes for a wee 'in case I wee wee on them' she says so its too slow in general if she wears tights at school for now at least.

Dd has 5 polos, 3 skirts, 1 pinafore and 2 cardigans plus school fleece. She has 2 pairs tights and 5 pairs long socks.

For pe she has black shorts and white plain t shirt. And she has plimsolls for pe as well as some more for indoor shoes. Teacher asks us to decorate the plimsolls so they can tell who's is who's, which I thought is rather nice!

Have u not had a sort of induction meeting about what uniform is required? We've had a ton of info. Do u need a snack box or a drink bottle? Book bag? Pe drawing bag?

ruddynorah yes there was an induction but we were all poorly so could not make it, we were given all the information we missed in a pack, including all the forms we needed to fill in, and a uniform order sheet, but it only contained information about the items we needed to order from them. DD will have a lunch box with a water bottle in it, I am guessing she won't need a separate snack box or water bottle? She has a school book bag with their emblem on it.

I need to pop in a see them again on the day before they start to pay for school cardis already ordered, so will double check the stuff I am unclear about, like the PE bag being drawstring. It is common to be drawstring though isn't it? I recall a friend's little one having one, although not the same school.

DD is in Reception. She wears a pinafore dress over a polo shirt, and the school sweatshirt over the top. She wears long socks as she finds them easier than tights.

Your DD may need a snack box and water bottle for breaktime as well as the one for lunch.

Different schools have different policies on summer vs. winter uniform in the autumn term. DS's school has official "summer" and "winter" uniforms but as far as they are concerned the children can wear any combination of items from the two lists at any time, which works out well and gives flexibility to adjust to the weather. I know of some other schools that have a "summer uniform must be worn from [date] but may not be worn beforehand" policy.

I think in most schools Summer dresses are often worn for the first half-term of the new school year,e.g. until October,as its often too warm then for the Winter uniform.In my dds school they were very flexible in reception (she has just finished it)and she only started wearing uniform in the last few weeks when she started going full time.Year one is when they like them all to be in uniform I think.(I loathe school uniforms,so I am sad about this!)

DD has just finished reception, she has pinis, skirts and trousers. She's not hugely keen on the pinis and prefers skirts or trousers when it's cold. We went for polo shirts, because they are just comfier and she can have red ones and some blouses (because they can wear gingham blouses in the winter:) )

Our school is flexible on summer/winter uniform and if it's warm after the summer hols then the girls will wear gingham dresses.

DD has sweatshirts for wearing with trousers and cardis for dresses. She prefers the cardis. She wears tights and can manage them herself.

PE bags can be anything really here, but most of them are drawstring. PE kit has to be a red t-shirt (pref school logo one), shorts, but not cycle shorts, black pumps.
Shoes can be anything as long as they are sensible. DD wears red shoes.

!!! I should have dragged my puking ass to the induction shouldn't i?!! I am now worried about the whole lunch box/snack box thing
