What does your reception year child wear to school?

DD starts school in september, the school 'uniform' is grey skirt/pinafore/white top and wine red jumper cardi with school emblem on it, or a pink/red summer dress As she progresses she will wear a tie.

I am a bit confused about what the norm is to wear in sept? I have bought her cardigans rather than jumpers as she finds these easier to take off if too hot. I love the idea of her wearing a pinafore, but if so, what does she wear underneath? shirt? polo shirt? Or, will most of the others just wear skirt and shirt, if so, a polo shirt, or a blouse? and what type of skirt, a pleated one, a plain one? What about a summer dress? are these worn in september? It is still warm?

I am amazed at how much this is doing my head in. I keep going to buy some clothes for her, and get my head all spinny by the choice! I don't want her to look out of place!

This thread is reminding me I must buy some plimsolls for DD. And probably new ones for DS.

DD is in the unusual situation of having started school once already in a mixed nursery/reception class in January. So I did buying uniform then. We have since moved and here it is preschool until you start reception. So she will start school again in September Grin. Luckily the uniform is similar (was just red - here is choice of red or blue) so her summer dresses bought with room to grow will get used again :). Weather is nearly always nice at beginning of September so I am hoping summer dress will get worn a bit. She might wear pinafore and polo shirt and cardigan on first day though.

Suppose I should check DS trousers for holes in knees. And get more school socks for both. And then school shoes....

ok so plimsoles that I bought are for indoor - can they be for PE too? Indoor/PE shoes, plus some normal clarkes/startrite whatever then? I really wish I had a uniform list, rather than the Order List.

I could not find any £4 for 3 polo shirts in M&S, they were £6 for 3. And no 3 for 2 either Hmm! Dh said, lets buy some Asda ones, then if they bag/get too dirty too quickly we will get the M&S ones. But I have to take M&S pinafores back as the 4 are too big, need 3yrs! This is why I am doing it all now!

It was these ones, but they are out of stock now in every colour except white. DD's (age 3) were £3 for 3, and the boys' were £4 for 3, and then they were on 3 for 2 so it cost £8 for 9 polo shirts. This is why I do my school uniform shopping early, everything always goes out of stock.

Your DD must be tiny if the age 4 pinafores are too big! DD is in age 2-3 clothes and is by far the smallest in her year and she has the age 4 ones.

domestic - was that what you intended to link to?!

domesticsluttery · 10/08/2010 13:01

Aaargh no it wasn't I linked to that on another thread about MN and FB... I wonder if I accidently put the polo shirt on there instead!? Blush

Oh I give up. I am clearly having a technical dimwit day...

domestic - dd is tiny yes, she is 3-4 on top and 2-3 on the bottoms, but her waist is tiny. the age 3 skirts are too big, but are adjustable. I think in fact her waist has got skinnier as she has got a little taller (she is 99cm heigh).

White is what she needs, yes, will go and see tomorrow if I can get them.

Can I just say from a teacher's point of view anything with buttons or zips down the back pose a problem for young children and lots of little girls struggle with pinafores so perhaps some practise over the holidays ...

undercovamutha · 10/08/2010 18:25

My DD didn't need indoor shoes last year. She just had school shoes and PE daps plimsolls. Perhaps it depends on the school.

PavlovtheCat · 10/08/2010 19:28

mrz thank you for that advice, we have been practicing as the pinafore has a little easy zip at the front, and she is fine with that, but it can go over the head anyway i think if she gets stuck! I specifically got the skirts with elasticated waists not zip sides like some had, for that very reason.

What she needs to practice, is to not take off her entire tights when going for the the loo 'in case i wee on them mama'. She has only just stopped taking ALL her clothes off at home when she has a poo Grin

ok, so if she doesn't need 'indoor' shoes, these can be her plimsoles, they were only £3! The photos on the school website show the kids just wearing normal shoes indoors, from what i can see...

We often find little girls take off their tights pants and skirts (for the first few weeks) when they go to the loo boys usually keep their socks on Grin

domesticsluttery · 10/08/2010 19:51

She is bigger than my DD then, I would think if she has the same pinafore dress as DD she will need the age 4 for the length.

DD struggles with putting tights back on properly so she wears knee high socks. Hopefully by the time it gets really cold she will have mastered it as I have yet to find trousers that fit her so she has to wear a pinafore.

PavlovtheCat · 10/08/2010 19:52

oh that is good to know, Grin she might well do it! however, I have not had any reports of her doing this at nursery, taking off her tights and skirt/trousers, but does if I am with her in a public convenience Grin.

domestic do you think? it just hangs on her...

domesticsluttery · 10/08/2010 20:03

DD's is like a tent Grin but the age 3 was too short really to be decent without tights, and she isn't very good with tights...

DD is 97cm tall and has a 47cm waist. She is 4.5 and so is really teeny!

undercovamutha · 10/08/2010 20:19

OP - my friends son still took all his clothes off to poo until he was TEN!
