Hi everyone

My daughter had her first period 2 months ago but nothing since. She got her period the exact same day as I got mine 2 months ago. She's supposed to be due her 3rd period in 7 days.

I really can't remember that far back to when I was 12 and I got my first period. I have no idea if they started off as regular or not. It was such a long time ago I'm 43 years old. I can't find anything on the Internet to explain this delay.

Please share your experiences.

You can’t find anything on the internet to explain this delay? It’s all over the internet that periods can be very irregular when you start.

highlandspooce · 04/06/2023 10:11

It's completely normal but I don't think anyone will be 'sharing their experiences' Hmm

Freefall212 · 04/06/2023 10:15

Periods are often very irregular following menarche. Usually they eventually get on a regular cycle but puberty is a mish mash of hormones, and it can often take up to two years before there is a regular cycle. And for some people - longer.

Well, I couldn't find anything that reassured me so I wanted to hear from other mothers that this is normal.

It's normal and nothing to be worried about op , they can take quite a while to settle down into a regular pattern

What is normal, though? 1 period in the first year? 2, 3, 4?
I'm not asking for specific details about people, Jesus.

My 13 year old daughter got her first period 4 months ago and now nothing since.
then my 10 year old had her first period That lasted 1 day and then again the following month lasting 1 day.
my eldest daughters first period was 6 months before her 2nd one so I think it’s completely normal.

My daughter also got hers at 10 and got a period every 2-3 months so around 4 or 5 in the first year. After that year though she got 1 every month and she's 14 now and it's pretty much the same but it does still get very irregular. It's normal, don't worry. 😊

People are taking the "sharing experiences" thing a bit too seriously lol

Passthecake30 · 04/06/2023 13:30

On the flip side my dd has been regular as clockwork every month since she started.

Teeheehee1579 · 04/06/2023 13:32

This thread is very helpful as my 13 year old is the same and frankly there is not anything conclusive or reassuring on line. Others on this thread are being ridiculous.

Thank you so much to those who shared their experience. I feel a lot better now about what to expect.

Yes, some comments threw me a bit. I started questioning myself about how appropriate my question was!

The Internet is so funny 😂

I find this extremely hard to believe. And why would other mothers assure you, unless some sort of qualified period specialist?

newtb · 04/06/2023 13:57

Fwiw, my periods started when I was 12 and were every 31 days for the next 40 years.

Mabelface · 04/06/2023 14:07

First at 12 then nothing till I was nearly 15

Kizzy192 · 04/06/2023 14:20

I started when I was 9. It's totally normal for them to take a year + to be regular. All totally fine.

highlandspooce · 04/06/2023 14:32

'Please share you experiences' is doing just that.

CremeEggThief · 04/06/2023 14:33

I had my first period at 11 and then nothing for 6 months. Completely normal, OP.

It's tough op because this is something which people do troll about and we have to be really careful about how we respond to this potential. Especially when this has been asked many times on here so you can search for previous threads and there's a huge amount online about it. Even a cursory Google answers the question definitively.

It is normal but different from person to person in terms of specifics. What's true for one person, might not be true for another. Ironically, unpredictability is the norm.

Google does say it is irregular in the beginning, but also says irregular periods generally are normal. I wanted to know if 2, 3 ,4 or more space between periods is normal.
Thankfully, others have shared that it is normal to not have a second period for 6 or more months. This is the specific information I was looking for, not Google saying "irregular is normal".
I'm relatively new here, so wasnt aware of the trolling issue around this topic. Thanks for the heads up.

I got my first period at 11 then absolutely nothing for 6 months when it came back and stayed in a regular cycle. It’s very normal.

Jellycats4life · 04/06/2023 16:27

Some girls start and then get their periods every month. Some don’t. Best thing to do is make sure she has spare pants/pads in her school bag, and you have supplies too in case she’s caught out when you’re out together.

Creepyrosemary · 04/06/2023 16:33

I second that everyone should be really careful what personal information they reveal about their or their daughters periods because there are men and posters on this board that get off on that.

I am okay to share that I once had 7 months between periods. I think that very irregular is fine for the first few years, and honestly after that the doctors still won't treat it unless you need fertility treatment. So periods not becoming regular just means that when someone wants to get pregnant they might want to seek help after a year of ttc.
