Correlation between height and period

tigermummy10 · 17/08/2021 14:28

I have seen a few threads on this but was hoping there were mums on here who noted their DD's height/age when period started to where they are now.

I was probably about 5’9” & 15 - I’m 6’ as an adult. My understanding was that both periods starting and menopause tends to follow whatever your Mum experienced (certainly true of me - including horrendous menopause which is likely to continue to 59..).

ZednotZee · 16/09/2021 23:06

My DD i 5' and 5.5 stone at almost thirteen,no sign of her period but she is very slight, as was I.
I got my period at 13.5, about 5'4 and seven is stone.
Ended up 5'9and eight stone at adulthood.

Justalittlebit10 · 19/09/2021 01:13

DD was 11.5 and 5'3 and 7 st 8.
9 months on and she's 5'5.

The earlier you start your period, the quicker you will reach adult final height. Growth slows significantly after the start of the menstrual cycle.

Autumncoming · 19/09/2021 07:38

It's not height its weight as oestrogen is produced by fat cells.
7 stone is a good indicator but if she's a tall skinny 7 stone, it'll be later than if she's short and 7 stone.

toadstool32 · 19/09/2021 09:19

@Autumncoming my daughter started at around 6stone

itsgettingwierd · 19/09/2021 09:19

@DelphiniumBlue

I did read that 7 stone ( approx 45kg) was a sort of trigger weight for the onset of periods. No idea how true that is, would be interesting to find out.
That's interesting.

I started very late at nearly 16.

But I didn't actually hit even 40kg until I was 15! I was probably barely 45 when I started.

Sadly I'm a lot more than that now HmmGrin

dementedpixie · 19/09/2021 09:20

As I said before, its not actual weight but body fat percentage that can trigger puberty so 7 stone may or not be the weight you start at.

Youcancallmeval · 19/09/2021 09:24

Mine had a first 'period' in y7 and at the time was about 8 stone and 5'5. She's now in y11 and has only had 6 periods in that time. She is about 9 stone and 5'6.

CimCardashian · 19/09/2021 09:46

My DD started a couple of months ago, she's 5ft 8 and 13 (and slim).

SweetBabyCheeses99 · 19/09/2021 10:07

It’s not height that’s so important, it’s weight. Or rather body fat percentage. A girl needs to have 17% body fat in order for menstruation to start. The same applies for women, athletes or those with eating disorders will often not have periods if their body fat drops below this figure. It sounds kinda arbitrary but I guess it’s mother nature’s way of making sure that a woman’s body has enough fat to be able to support her and a baby through pregnancy.

Iheartbaby · 19/09/2021 16:47

For everyone saying the height their daughters started their period, what was your dd final height (as per op)

Pretendingtosmile · 19/09/2021 16:52

I don't have a DD but I was 164cm and aged 10.

Pretendingtosmile · 19/09/2021 16:53

I'm 5"8 now fwiw

whatsnext2 · 19/09/2021 17:27

Numerous factors determine the growth spurt and menarche, including genetic, environmental, socioeconomic and maternal health and weight.

The Frisch-Revelle hypothesis [which states that the onset of menses is positively associated with increasing body fat in pubertal girls (22% or 48 kg of body weight, approximately), is somewhat outdated, especially with respect to the definition of “critical weight.”

tigermummy10 · 01/10/2021 11:23

@dementedpixie Yes! Maybe I wasn't clear Hmm

Also, my DD has started so I shall keep a record on her height now and see how much she grows .

as @dementedpixie has said several times. It is body fat %

Mumshappy · 16/10/2021 00:58

My Dd started a week before her 11th birthday. Shes not tall and shes a dancer with little body fat. I was nearly 13 when I started my periods. Tall and slim. Older Dd was petite and around the same age as me. Theres no pattern in my house!

Confuzzlediddled · 16/10/2021 01:02

Mine was a month before her 16th birthday (Christmas Day poor kid!) and about 5"6' . She's now 18 and 5"10'

Confuzzlediddled · 16/10/2021 01:03

She's carried extra weight since about 12/13 so definitely wasnt body fat related

onlychildhamster · 16/10/2021 02:27

I was around 40 kg and 1.5 m when I started my periods at 12.. I am 1.52m albeit 53 kg today,.need to lose weight!

DumpedByText · 16/10/2021 02:54

My DD is 14 and started a month ago, she's 5ft.

CC1991 · 16/10/2021 20:03

I started at 10y 6m and can't remember my exact height when I started, but I remember my mum saying that my height on those percentile graphs was always just below average, which sounds right because I was never one of the taller ones in my class. I've just looked up the graphs online and it seems I was probably around 140cm tall at that point. I'm only about 152cm (5ft) now, and I stopped growing at 13. It's not surprising that I ended up short as I come from a short family, but if I'd started later I probably would've gained a few centimetres Grin

I was quite petite weight-wise when I started as well - about 6 stone I think.

CC1991 · 16/10/2021 20:06

Oh, and as an adult I'm now in the 2nd percentile, haha.
