How tall is your 10 year old?

Dd is 10y9m and 5'2" she absolutely hates being so tall. She's always been the tallest girl by a stretch but she's grown even more during lockdown and is feeling really self-conscious about returning to school. We've had so many chats about how beautiful she is, how lovely to be tall (I'm only 5'4"), everyone's different etc but she can't see past it. FYI she started puberty early age 8 and got her first period two months ago and is crazy skinny, a tall beanpole.

My 12 year old DS is 5'11 and just grown out of his size 11 Vans.

BrideofBideford · 26/02/2021 18:13

I think girls stop growing once their periods start?

As a teen I was too tall (according to my mum Grin I was 5ft 11 at age 13. I had not started my periods, the GP said he could put me on the pill, and that that would kickstart my periods (and stop me growing, he said after periods girls grow max 1-2 inches more)

CavernousScream · 26/02/2021 18:17

That prediction site someone posted thinks my DS is going to be 191cm with a size 7.5 shoe Grin. He’ll topple over...

cautiouscovidity · 26/02/2021 19:20

My 11y3m DD is the opposite - 4'3"

thetall · 26/02/2021 20:30

@CavernousScream the site was of course just for fun. Wink I tried with some stats of myself as a kid, and it guessed somehow right shoe size and height. Totally off-track weight, though.

Muskox · 26/02/2021 20:35

I've just checked, and my DD was exactly the same height at that age OP - she was the tallest in her class too. She's now 13yo and is nearly 5'10". She's great at netball and loves being tall!

Christmasfairy2020 · 02/03/2021 22:44

Dd aged 11 turned 11 in jan. Is 5ft2 and wears a size 7.5 shoe. No periods

CoffeeRunner · 02/03/2021 22:48

My best friend at secondary school was the tallest girl in Year 7.

She had started her periods at primary school & already had boobs when the rest of us didn’t. She hated being so big/tall.

Now we are 45. She is 5ft 3” & a size 10. Everybody caught up with her soon enough.

clary · 02/03/2021 22:50

I taught a yr 7 girl (so only a few months older than your dd) who was taller than me and I'm 5ft 6.

She feels tall just now but next year she won't be. The boys will start to catch up, other girls will grow, she may not end up being relatively that tall.

Ds2 was tiny in yr 5-6-7 (like, much smaller than his two year older sister) and she stopped at 5ft 3 and now aged 17 he is 5ft 10. His brother is 6ft 6 so we have it all in this house!!

SaltedCaramelPopcorn · 02/03/2021 22:54

I was 5'3 at 11 and adult height (reached when I was 15) is 5'9. Definitely grew a few more inches after I started my period

Christmasfairy2020 · 04/03/2021 18:14

What size shoes does everyone's y6 daughter take as my dd is in a 7.5! She only 5ft2!

dippyegg32 · 04/03/2021 18:20

Hi @Christmasfairy2020 my daughter is also 5'2 and I've just bought new school shoes in a 4.

Christmasfairy2020 · 04/03/2021 22:00

Gosh knows why my dd is a 7.5 then. She has bigger feet than me.

Ellbell24 · 05/03/2021 00:17

When my sister was 10 she was 5ft and me and mum have always been really small. My mum being 5ft1 and me being 5ft2. She hated it but learnt to love it, me and mum had to constantly fill her with confidence and it may sound stupid but the thing that brought her round was the fact supermodels are usually very tall🤣 hope your little one feels happy soon xxx

DustyMaiden · 05/03/2021 00:52

I was 5 ft 2 at 10. I still am.

GrumpyHoonMain · 05/03/2021 00:55

I was 5 ft 4 I think at 9 when I started my periods. I’m almost (but not quite) 5ft 8 now. It’s not true at all that a girl stops growing after starting her period.

KobaniDaughters · 05/03/2021 01:15

Bless her, it’s a tough age to feel like you stand out. Apparently (can’t remember where I heard this) girls stop growing about 2 years after they start their periods so it’s unlikely she’ll end up towering above everyone forever. I remember one of my friends aged 12 was the tallest by a long shot at 5’4”, but then she stopped growing a year later and I ended up much taller at 5’9” but didn’t stop growing until I was 15

I understand though - my 9yr old DD is just shy of 5’ and my 12yr old DS is now taller than me, they’re pretty happy about it but everyone in their family is tall, she probably feels a bit like the odd one out if you are shorter. Not much you can do, if it wasn’t height it would be something else. Puberty is hard!

thetall · 05/03/2021 15:13

@Christmasfairy2020
My DS at 11 was around 4’7” and a 2.5 in shoes. Now he is 15 and 5’6” and wears a 5.5
Although he got quite a growth spurt in the latest years he seems to have really tiny feet compared to your daughter and kids his age.

Stokey · 07/03/2021 08:32

@CoffeeRunner I sound like your BF. I was one of the tallest girls in my primary but haven't grown since I was 12 and now at 5'3", am quite petite.

My DD2 aged 8 is only a couple of cm smaller than my DD1 who is 11. The youngest already had size 4 feet while oldest is 2.5. I assume youngest is going to be task but are may end up getting periods early and staying small like me while eldest child have a growth spurt. My DH was smallest in his class until he was 15 and is now over 6 ft.

mediumduboir · 07/03/2021 08:48

I'm tall just under 5ft10 and I didn't start my period early. My boys are tall and my little girl who's 5 even more, in age 8 clothes for somethings.

Tallbird1974 · 07/03/2021 15:00

DD has just turned 11 and is 5ft 9in in socks. I am 6ft 2in and husband is 6ft 6in.

Christmasfairy2020 · 07/03/2021 17:18

@Tallbird1974 shes 5ft9 at 11? What shoe size is she x

brizzling · 07/03/2021 17:44

She's not really that tall and she's started her periods young so probably won't be tall as an adult. I started mine at 13 but was already about 5'7 then.

LarryUnderwood · 07/03/2021 17:50

Gosh my 9.5 Yr old son is the complete opposite - not sure of his exact height but he's one of the smallest at school, and he only just got size 1.5 shoes after around 1.5 years of being size 13. His dad is 6'4 and I'm 5'5...

Magnificentmug12 · 07/03/2021 17:57

My brother was very small, so tiny, he hit 17 and shot through the roof in 1 year! His tall now.
