Pubic hair - 9 year old dd

I THINK I might have spotted a few very fine pubic hairs on my 9 year old dd. She hasn't noticed herself and I'm not going to draw any attention to them obviously.

She's had a bit of discharge for a while so I assume this means that puberty is well and truly on its way? This is within normal age limits I presume? She just seems so young.

Dd is 10 and has quite a few now. It's horrible isn't it? :(

She's my youngest (of 3 girls) and older two didn't have any changes till much later.

Mine had started at that age too, and in fact before she was even 11 was fully developed in that area! Periods started just before she was 11 too and pretty much had developed boobs too. It's amazing how much younger it all seems to start for them than it did for me or my peers.

Sad but not fortunately not unnatural. Puberty is only precocious below 8 in girls. Hopefully they will just stay fine strands for a bit longer and she can enjoy being a child for couple more years

Same age as DSD - she started her periods just after her 10th birthday....

DD was about the same age and has only just started her periods at 13 1/2, same age as me, so there may be a way to go yet.

If it helps I was 9/10 when pubic hair and breast buds started, but periods didn't start until I was 12 and a half. The early puberty stage can last several years.

My dd got her period at 9.9 and had a bra when she was just 9 I was the same so don't know if it's in the genes. They're not babies for long

I was 9 when I got pubic hair and breasts started growing. I didn't start my periods until I was almost 13 though, so it doesn't mean that your DD will start imminently.

I'm nearly 70 and my periods started as I turned 11. I don't get this idea that 'it's all starting so much earlier these days'. In fact my daughters started 2-3 years later than I did.

Thanks all. Will wait and see and hope things go slowly for a few years! My older two dds started their periods at 11 and a quarter and nearly 13 but at least they were out of primary school.

It's within normal range of development. Also just because their bodies are developing doesn't mean they're no longer children. It's not "sad", just normal in a world of well nourished children.

This doesn't necessarily mean puberty is underway. Breast development is the sign they really look for. And big growth spurt. Public hair can start in isolation.

What fanjo said. It isn't uncommon for girls to have pubic hair at nine (and younger). Sometimes it's just one of those things. It doesn't mean puberty is on the way at all - breast buds are the start of that.

Puberty is considered normal from age 8 in this country (7 in America according to dds consultant !)

We were also told that periods usually arrive. 2 years after breasts first start to develop.

I was ten when I hit puberty, I remember feeling so awkward as I was still at primary school and there were no sanitary bins for when I was on my period!

I started a post on here last year about my DD. I noticed just after her 7th birthday that she had pubic hair.
I took her to the doctors for an assessment, they sent her for an X-ray to determine her bone age (apparently this determines puberty etc) and they confirmed she is going through it.
She's 8 and a half now, has quite a lot of hair but it doesn't bother her.

Coming back to my thread with a quick question - should dd cover up in front of dh now? She's still happy to run around with not much on, leaves the bathroom door open etc....

I'll answer this honestly.
If she's comfortable then leave her to it, unless anyone else in the house feels uncomfortable with it.
You don't want her to be embarrassed by her own body as its only natural, but at the same time you don't want her thinking that running around starkers in front of everyone is a good thing (you never know who is watching)

my 9 yr old DD has had obviously pubic hair for quite a while. She was so upset about being the only one in her class with hairy armpits that my 13 year old daughter taught her to shave them which I was not at all sure about but have accepted it makes her feel more like everyone else!

I had pubic hair and breasts at this age but I didn't actually start my periods until I was 14.

I don't think she needs to, no. I don't see why families should EVER have to worry about seeing each other naked. Obviously cover up in front of others, but immediate family? No I don't think so.

Why take away her innocence before she decides she's ready?

My 9 year old is skinny as a rake, but has the start of hairy armpits and little breast buds. I thought she'd be late to hit puberty because she has such a young body shape, but I was wrong.

I noticed fine hair down below on my children a long time before any sign of proper curlies! I thought DD was going to start periods about a year before she actually did as she was quite developed but she didn't until aged 13 (about a year later than I did).
