What are the current thoughts in situation in Russia?

Scary! I've always dreamed of living in Finland, but now I just feel for them and the Norwegians, due to their proximity to Russia.

fudgecat · 06/10/2026 13:08

Very important to know that it's pneumonic plague and not bubonic plague that is in Russia. Similar names but actually very different

Isn't that the worse one of the 2

Pneumonic is terrifying - kills in 24 hours and the mortality rate is huge. But clever people are saying it’s too virulent to spread as it kills people before they can sneeze on someone.

OhMyGodSusan · 06/10/2026 14:13

Its fine. Everywhere in that proximity is locked down and so far only seems like the lab worker was effected. Unfortunately this is the risk the lab workers know they are taking when researching these things.

Honeypizza · 06/10/2026 15:08

I read that it might be an unknown pneumonia rather than the plague, which is more concerning. The news reports coming out of Russia are all really varied, including stories that suggest it didn't happen in a lab. Apparently if it is pneumonic then it's easily treatable, but I suppose with it being in Russia we don't really know what's happening.

I can’t be arsed with all this again. I’d rather let it take me than go through the whole clapping/banana bread/toilet roll bollocks again.

emuloc · 06/10/2026 15:18

No real thoughts tbh. I am in the process of decluttering my head, with all the constant noise going on around me. If people are not worried about one thing, it is another. Should we be prepping, one week, and something else the next!

DamsonIcecream · 06/10/2026 15:26

I’m

JustWalnut · 06/10/2026 15:30

Ach, we're all going to die of something. If it's the pneumonic plague, so be it!

Thatsanotherfinemess1 · 06/10/2026 15:31

It does take you out quickly, it looks as though damsonicecream has succumbed...

BorgQueen · 06/10/2026 15:36

There’s a fabulous series of books called ‘After it happened’ by Devon C Ford.
UK based - killer plague, just the thing to get you thinking ‘what if’.

LOL same here. I did cave and buy 4 cans of ravioli and a 20 pack of quavers in case of armageddon recently - DH suggested we just add a few items to each shop to build up supplies gradually, rather than ram-raid CostCo, but I was more interested in whether we should stock up in Majestic and Pets@Home.

IAxolotlQuestions · 06/10/2026 16:04

Not bothered about it. Russia is pretty locked down anyway, and it’s too fast acting to be able to spread too much in the absence of major travel hubs. It’s not worth worrying about it for now.

Ahh, I used to love tinned ravioli, served with chips, back in the day.😋

OhMyGodSusan · 06/10/2026 17:11

Apparently another person just died of it.

Do you have a reputable source for this ?

As I have said on t'other thread, if you are taken to anxiety, don't read Annie Jacobsons book "Biological War: A Scenario".
It is a work of fiction but extremely well researched, and the beginning of it will give you a deja vu moment.
