What do you have in your "go" bag?

I'm trying to put together a bag that I can grab if I needed to evacuate my flat in any situation. I've got my passport, 3 days of underwear, a pair of leggings, a top, socks, my medication, painkillers, toothpaste, I need to buy a toothbrush as mine is electric.

What else is essential?

Bottle of water.
Charger/ powerbank

onwardandupwards · 19/09/2026 18:26

I've got a small folder with passports, birth certificates, some cash.
Also have a phone charger, mini deodrant, some sanitary pads and a box of cereal bars.

YourAmberExpert · 19/09/2026 18:30

Are you in an earthquake zone? Japan?

danglethedingle · 19/09/2026 19:26

I've also got a Photocopy of home insurance details and a list of emergency contact numbers in case my phone dies and I can borrow one, or for someone else to use.

CatnipLeaves · 19/09/2026 20:14

Water, powerbank, some kind of snack, insurance docs.

Maybe a small packet of wipes, some tissues or loo roll and probably some hand gel? Being evacuated to a local school or community centre overnight after a gas leak is one of the scenarios I see this sort of bag as good for. I can see the toilets getting a bit horrible after a few hours.

springhasspringed · 20/09/2026 00:00

All good ideas, thank you.

What scenario is there possibly going to be where you have to leave your house quickly but also have time to grab a bag?

Save the money and use it to get a hotel room instead.

There are lots of instances of people having to evacuate immediately due to flooding - either burst water main or heavy rain. Sink holes is another one, or in Scotland there was an emergency evacuation to do with coal mines causing land instability.

There have been evacuations due to unexploded WW2 bombs, or there was one in Margate last year where streets were evacuated by the police due to some sort of suspicious items (though am not sure what).

Residents in Suffolk, as well as France, Greece and elsewhere all had to evacuate due to wildfires. I don’t know how much notice they all had that it was coming. Domestic fires in blocks of flats.

The whole point is that you have this type of bag pretty much by the door. You don't pause to pack it.

Do you live under a rock and are unable to follow the latest news?

wet wipes, hand sanitizer, snacks, phone numbers written down on a piece of paper, if important medicines then print out a prescription copy in case of cyber attack (has already hapoened in several places), tiny flashlight (there are some excellent ones), socks, small flanell, cash, whistle, local map, multi-tool, chapstick, compact with mirror, sewing kit…

NotPerfectlyAdverage · 21/09/2026 21:54

I don't have passports or any documents like that in mine as its only ever been used for dashing to hospital or A&E.

Power bank. Leads and pug
Toothbrush and paste
Deodorant, travel shower gel and flannel
Hand gel
Book
Change
Empty water bottle
Mints. Sometimes a can of coke and snacks but decided I'd forget to rotate them.
Chrochet!
Medical gloves and mask ( started on covid).
Notebook and pen
Tissues
List of clothes to pack
Head phones
Earplugs

Even when i blue lighted to A&E there was time to pack clothes. Grab bag was incredibly handy. But i always have power bank and leads in pouch in my handbag now

Thanks. I don't get a prescription, I order my medication online.

  • Gas leak.
  • Emergency hospital admission. Even if you don't grab the bag, someone else in the house can grab it for you.
  • Family emergency where you are travelling in a hurry to the family member. Saves fannying about trying to remember all your essential meds.

During a power cut, it's a lot easier to find the essentials if they are in one place.

Save the money and use it to get a hotel room instead.

  • A hotel room doesn't have my prescription meds in it.
  • If your whole district is fleeing a wildfire, there won't be enough hotel rooms. You'll be sleeping on the floor of a school gym.
selffellatingouroborosofhate · 21/09/2026 23:00

Water sterilisation tablets and a big enough water container to take whatever one tablet will sterilise.

Bowser water shouldn't be assumed to be safe to drink.

Do you live under a rock and are unable to follow the latest news?

Do you frequently minimise a very real threat to life and are unable to follow the latest news?

I think there's been a misunderstanding of intent here. I think that poster thought you were being sarcastic. I interpreted your first reply as having a subtext of "if you aren't in an earthquake zone, why are you worrying about bugging out?". I'm autistic and yet I perceived that subtext, so it's very likely that other posters perceived it too. I rolled my eyes and scrolled past, whereas that poster rose to the perceived bait.

Your follow-up post makes me think you are being sincere with that question and are trying to understand OP's threat model.

Pootles34 · 22/09/2026 08:45

Families affected by the recent wild fires said this exact thing happened - knock on the door by the fire brigade, you need to get out now.

Don't let your meds run low and keep them in the original box that has a prescriber's label with your name on.

Assume that it will take at least a week for supplies to come through and get your refills accordingly.

In a crisis, it's likely that pharmacists or nurse prescribers would be able to treat the box as sufficient evidence to give a bridging prescription. In Wales, pharmacists can already do this for tourists who go on holiday with insufficient meds.

You are absolutely right, I did assume it was sarcasm. 😂

Mascara. Chewing gum. My cat.

DewDropsAndCobWebs · 22/09/2026 16:10

We have complete 72 hour packs, kept in the front hall closet by the door ready to go.
It has food, water, first aid, shelter, lighting and photocopies of our important docs.
Also spare cash in five dollar denominations, extra food for the pets and a week of current meds.
We keep the cats travel cage there too.

We live on Vancouver Island in Canada, in an earthquake area, and right on the water where we are also in a tsunami zone too.

Currently there is a forest fire , two towns away. We are safe, but it is a reminder that go time can be any time.

Cuiriossir · 22/09/2026 16:11

I have a crossbow with bolts. Water purification. Cash. Fire starting stuff. Painkillers/meds
