Proposal to create a new Sustanability board and to move Preppers into it.

Hi Preppers,

We are putting together a proposal to give to MNHQ to merge the Weather and Climate Change topics into one topic. Out of that proposal has come the suggestion to create a new Sustainability board and to move Weather and Climate Change from out of 'others' and into 'sustainability'.

We clearly can't have just one board under Sustainability and wondered how you all would feel about moving out from 'other' and into 'Sustainability'? The majority of responses would need to be positive before we take this to MNHQ. It would be terribly rude to move you without asking first.

We are also asking the Ethical Living people whether they would like to move from 'other' into it.

Think weather and climate go together well. Might get more traffic to climate topics.

There needs to be a tidy up of other every now and again.

Can you explain how you see it fits? People prep for many reasons, such as the cost of living, effect of wars and other events on supplies, general self reliance. I see it as belonging with things like gardening and chicken keeping under a self reliance theme.

Exactly Blackeyed everything would remain the same for Preppers, except you'd be found in the new grouping of topics called Sustainability instead of Home and Garden.
That is of course if others agreed and MNHQ agreed!

Of course Emerald and I agree that the overlap is much less than with Ethical living. A lot of prepping is done for the effects of climate change: severe weather, supply shortages (though of course the cause of that is multifold), utilities being cut off, etc.

I can entirely see and respect what you are saying though and if others feel the same way then we won't add Preppers to the proposal that we put forward.

I agree that Home and Garden would be a much better fit. Gardening and DIY are there which are also related to self reliance.

Also, if I was looking for prepping topic I honestly would never think to look under sustainability.

Seems really odd. What has 'prepping' got to do with sustainability, when people may be prepping for a million things unconnected with climate change events -- and when prepping strategies may have effects that are good, bad or neutral in relation to sustainability??

Unless there is more than one topic that belongs under the category of sustainability, why create it as a board?

I outlined my reasons for thinking there was an overlap and a commonality in a previous post. I'm entirely happy to accept that the majority here may not feel that there is sufficient commonality.

Style and Beauty is a better fit I feel. Sustainability is increasingly a part of the clothing industry, organic, recycled clothing and so on, because of the effect of fast fashion on the planet.

I don't post very often, but follow the preppers thread. I would not think to look for it in a sustainability topic, although any prepping for the more long term would have to be sustainable. I think it goes better with gardening, but even better with a Homesteading or Self Sufficiency topic.

I think that it looks like most here would not see a natural fit of Preppers into a Sustainability area. That's fair enough and I understand your reasons as to why not.

I think Style and Beauty would probably resist a move into Sustainability even more you guys.

For me, prepping is absolutely a sustainability issue: yes environmental but also about sustaining my standard of living, or (in a more extreme scenario) my ability to survive. I do feel this board would sit more comfortably under Sustainability than Other, though my only real concern is that I know where to find it!

Yeah, but 'sustainability' in that wider sense is not what the board title would mean. Otherwise you could post there about, eg your partner's ability to sustain a logical argument or good posture or an erection .

It seemed like there was no point in proposing a change to MNHQ that no one else supported, so I asked people. I'm curious as to why you ask.

I was wondering if you were a moderator or your reasons for wanting the topics reorganised myself. Have others posters expressed a desire for a sustainability board on another thread? Do we need one? Surely sustainability should just be a part of everyday life, something considered within many topics, such as 'how often do you wash your towels?' or 'do I need 20 handbags?'?

Preppers being about self reliance is a better fit for home and garden to me.

Doesn’t the new My Feed make the topics redundant anyway? If someone wants Weather, Preppers, Gardening etc readily accessible then they can do that using the Feed feature, can’t they?

I don’t recognise you as a regular contributor to the Preppers forum, so wonder why you feel you should be asking for it to be moved, when regular contributors have said they don’t.

I think it's that someone, or a group of people, think there should be a sustainability board and so they are trying to take a variety of topics with any commonality and put them together.
