Proposal to create a new Sustanability board and to move Preppers into it.

Hi Preppers,

We are putting together a proposal to give to MNHQ to merge the Weather and Climate Change topics into one topic. Out of that proposal has come the suggestion to create a new Sustainability board and to move Weather and Climate Change from out of 'others' and into 'sustainability'.

We clearly can't have just one board under Sustainability and wondered how you all would feel about moving out from 'other' and into 'Sustainability'? The majority of responses would need to be positive before we take this to MNHQ. It would be terribly rude to move you without asking first.

We are also asking the Ethical Living people whether they would like to move from 'other' into it.

The focus seems to be on creating a sustainability topic and finding more to put in there rather than what is best for the preppers board and where it best fits.

I don't post here much but I feel prepping fits better in home and garden, not sustainability.

I don't think Preppers fits in sustainability. I'd think it was better in home and garden if it desperately needed to be somewhere else, but I can't see a reason to change it currently. (I do post on here but I name change frequently)

MN have been talking about tidying up the topics for years.

It's also not really useful to tidy away the toothpaste to the tea and coffee cupboard just because you put it in your mouth in the morning. Even if the cupboard is practically empty and could do with more things in it.

I’m not from England, but I’m mostly here for the prepper talk. If I did a search on google it would be for preppers and certainly not sustainability. I would never even had found MN tbh. So no thanks, prepper is a very specific word and subject, and also comes up in search engines.

Agree, preppers would fit better in home and garden.

Very pleased to have a sustainability section though, as it's important and could help a few of us to make tweaks to our way of living.

Well I was one of the original founders of the preppers topic (under a different user name). We spun out of the ultra specific “Ebola” topic!

I have much respect for Oybbk and her amazing weather knowledge. I wouldn’t think to look for preppers under a heading of “sustainability” but neither would I look for weather there. I do think it goes with ethical living, climate change, self sufficiency, extreme weather etc. Perhaps it just needs a different topic title?

I find the first board I check is “in the club” before I remember “others”. However, I do agree that Home and Garden is a better fit for preppers not sustainability.

@OhYouBadBadKitten I'm 18 months late to this conversation, but I think creating a Sustainability section and moving Preppers there is an excellent idea. It's a natural fit, the other topics are of relevance, and it's the first section I'd look in for a Preppers/Resilience board.

Grouping topics like weather, climate change, ethical living, prepping/resilience, veganism, childfree might help people put the puzzle pieces together and take the big picture more seriously.

I suspect responses here reflect where people are on the 'buy our way out of trouble by stockpiling lots of useful stuff so my family are okay' vs. 'learn useful skills to contribute to community and live in harmony with the planet' approaches to survival.

You're ahead of where MN is, and we're all far behind what planetary wellbeing requires.
