How many weeks of stock do you think is necessary?

How many weeks (or months .....) of food and other items do you think we need to put by in preparation for a deal Brexit in 2021?

We started with cat food, and we've aimed for 2.5 - 3 months. That's in the loft, mouse -proofed, out of the way. It'll get used anyway.

With my essential medications, I'd like to be able to say in December that I've got enough to get me through till March. That'll also all get used anyway.

Food and toiletries, at least 6-8 weeks. We have a lot of tins and jars, pasta and flour/rice. This we will either use ourselves, or give to the food bank.

6 months to a year. If the country is in an even worse mess by then and it's a possibility to relocate somewhere better then consider it as an option.

only buy what you will eat, can afford and have space to store.
what are your priorities? eg your kid will only eat one sort of pasta, get some of that as a back up in case it goes out of stock again. (macaroni for autistic child here. )

I have plenty of coffee and pringles and dried milk as these are important to me.

I have a bit of everything we normally use, but more of the stuff that is essential to members of our family.

I am going to write a list of about a month's meals, and am slowly trying to amass the ingredients for those meals.

It's not just Brexit we will be dealing with at the same time there is the economic situation and covid so if you have them all combined at the same time the the effects can be disastrous.

As long as you buy food you are going to be eating anyway then it's like an insurance.

Pre-covid, 6 months would have been realistic, although on the optimistic side. I agree that with additional restrictions, 1 year is absolutely possible and realistic.

The Spanish flu took around 2 years to mutate to something less deadly and I expect Covid to follow a similar timeline. Storing a year of supplies is just not possible for most of us, though. If everyone gets in as much they feasible can, it will ease pressure on the supply chain - and that is the best anyone could do.

Do what you can. Anything helps. Even if you can only afford a bit, it will help supplement what you can afford to buy or actually be able to find in the shops or grow.

I will be able to plug in the new freezer as I have now created a hole in the side panel of a worksurface to be able to put the plug through.

I wish I was Blackeyed just think that if I write a list I might have an idea of what I need and the cost. Have had a lot to pay out this year so not too flush atm, am aiming to just try to get as much as I can. Smile

Careful thought then. It is difficult when funds are tight.

Offers on 4 for£1 on some tins in Asda. Tinned beans mainly but tomatoes too.

Yes I think as others say obviously it's very dependent on funds, but just squirrel a bit away when you can, make sure it's stuff you like and will use and take a note so you don't forget where it all is and when it goes ood.

There is a site called the modern survivalist, he lived in Argentina during the economic collapse, it's full of useful info, videos and lists of what to put by if it helps.

Again all we can do is prepare for the worst the best we can with what we've got and hope for the best.

If planning to grow stuff next year don't forget seeds, compost, quality soil etc.

Talks, which were supposed to have finished, have restarted. Hoping for some sort of a deal while preparing for no deal.

Thanks Blackeyed will take a look. Also Lidl do 4 for a £ always. This week they also had an offer on washing powder liquid I think it was £1.29 great value use it all the time.

Great to know Lidl have "offers" on too. Need to venture into Aldi for washing liquid and other stuff as I have used most of it up since end Feb.

Given that we're already at the end of October, I don't think many of us are going to be able to pull together a stash of several months worth of food, without doing the panic buying that everyone was so critical of pre-lockdown.

I am just learning my lessons from what went out of stock back in March - plenty of pasta, rice, tinned fruit and veg and of course, loo rolls. Not really counting in terms of length of time, more in essential items.

I'll probably get some heat here but there's a lull right now supermarkets wise. I predict around 2-3 weeks before the Christmas rush starts, it would have been longer but the press have started with the brexit food thing, people won't catch on to that at first because Christmas is coming. Shop smart, don't go mad and get some staples to store.

Offers are on. Take advantage of them. They won't be for long.
