Prepping for a Pandemic... 15

A lot of us have been here before. We Prepped for Brexit. Some of us are Heathcare workers. We prepare for the worst every day. It's difficult to predict what will happen in our lives. In our lifetime. Will we get Cancer? Will a huge meteorite wipe the world out?

One thing is for sure, this new virus is either affecting us, or is going to affect us all very soon. You are all already onboard. I hope you are prepared and much as you can be. And in the meantime this thread is here to support us all.

This week will bring many new challenges. We are almost certain to have some sort of lockdown. Like other parts of Europe. We aren't special. We aren't different. We are all
fragile souls. But I hope we live to tell the tale.

God Speed.

And I agree on the group sexistroles, I have name changed a few times so even though I've been on the various prepping boards and threads for the last year or so, I look like a newbie. I would struggle with WhatsApp, but it still stings a little.

Sprayitall · 18/03/2020 08:05

@sleepismysuperpower1 oh thank you. Ordering some right away.
@Teaand no not at all. The initial days were full of panic and worry along with last minute prepping ideas. Now it’s gone quieter as things are slowing down outside. It’s not your fault in anyway x
@nightshade1 dh had previously booked delivery at Waitrose a while ago that was scheduled next week because he needed something from there (funnily we have never ordered much in Waitrose before this - thanks to his experimental ideas in the kitchen, his trolley didn’t add up more than £20.00 so he was about to cancel the delivery - I screamed my head off when i saw what he was doing and was able to edit the order and add few more things. I don’t think dh still understands why) I then had to explain there are no delivery slots anywhere which was very hard for him to believe.

HasaDigaEebowai · 18/03/2020 08:08

You can only do so much ofwarren. Im cross with my DH's elderly relatives who completely ignored me and now its me and DH running around trying to sort them out with locking down for 12 weeks when we are supposed to be calmly here doing our own thing. My own DP are just largely pretending its not affecting them and whilst my mum is over 65, overweight and has a breathing issue planning on going to see my DN this weekend who will have arrived back from the US the night before. People are idiots and people are scared

Sprayitall · 18/03/2020 08:18

@ofwarren so sorry for your situation x I know people can go overboard with their emotions if they are not preppers. My case is similar to yours and I am the one who is in medical field at home so anything related to this I have been prepping and ordering online for three homes in three different countries for that matter. Thankfully I don’t expect any money from parents but still they pay me back. For my sibling who lives in nz I will login for her and add the items in the trolley so she can buy it herself & pay on delivery.

ofwarren · 18/03/2020 08:21

HasaDig
I'm just going to leave them to it now.
My mum is diabetic, has high blood pressure and autoimmune diseases and is just carrying on.
Daft thing is, she rang me the other day to tell me that her and my dad had just been in to pay for their funerals! So she's prepping for death, not for living?
I don't understand it at all.

MoonlightMistletoe · 18/03/2020 08:29

New guidance has been published on what you need to do to protect yourself, protect others, and protect the NHS.

Please take a few minutes to read this important advice on #COVID2019

MrsWhites · 18/03/2020 08:33

Another recommendation for Anthisan cream, it’s excellent at treating any bites or stings! I’ve already got some in for the spring/summer!

nellodee · 18/03/2020 08:47

I have felt for the last two months that I've been shouting at people playing on a beach, "There's a Tsunami coming!" and I feel that I've been treated by many as a mad woman on the street wearing a "The end is nigh" sandwich board.

Even the people who nodded and agreed with me have gone on to speak to someone else in the next breath about the holiday they've booked for June. People just haven't got it at all.

I was just talking to my husband this morning, saying, "Remember when you used to call these my Psycho Supplies?" We were both wishing he'd been right.

Ever so sorry to hear that some of you, who have done such a wonderful job of sounding the alarm bells loud and clear for all to hear, are now being held responsible for other people's unwillingness to listen.

YoursTunbridgeWells · 18/03/2020 08:53

@ofwarren Flowers I think family can't cope with the reality so they are taking it out on you. They shouldn't but they are frightened and confused probably - some of the large supermarkets here have literally nothing in at all. Completely empty.

I have bought myself a boxset of DVDS Grin beacuse I doubt the wifi will cope with 5 of us.

I am worried about how much I have spent on everything - food obviously but vitamins, pulse oximeters, honey, elderberries, medicines etc etc. But I haven't spent anything on clothes, shoes, handbags, eating out or trips anywhere since December.

I really need to get some fresh food this week but am getting increasingly intimidated by empty supermarkets. Locally there has been no fresh food at all - no veg, no fruit, meat fish, eggs milk butter and cheese as well as the usual no soap, showergel, tins, bread, loo roll, tissues, washing powder, washing up liquid and paracetamol.

Butchers are completely empty and closed by 10am. Don't know where to go?

ofwarren · 18/03/2020 08:59

I've hid the thread by accident 😱
Any idea how to unhide it?

Justalittlebitfurther · 18/03/2020 09:12

I've finally caught up on the thread. I also had a bad day yesterday - feel like I've been waiting for this to happen for so long and now it's here I don't know what to do.

We are self isolating for 14 days - I find this thread invaluable so please keep posting everyone!

Justalittlebitfurther · 18/03/2020 09:13

@ofwarren are you on the app or the browser?

CakeOnMe · 18/03/2020 09:16

@WeBuiltCisCityOnSexistRoles hearing about it gives me the (sadly very familiar!) feeling of always being the last one being picked for teams in PE!
You’ve hit the nail on the head there, I’ve name changed a couple of times, but I have been around since the start of these prepping for pand. threads. I really saw this as a community, it still is- but it’s different now🤷‍♀️

@ofwarren I think a few of us are in the same situation. I’ve been telling my mother (50’s) to start prepping since Feb. She hasn’t listened. She still insists on us meeting up to go out to restaurants, despite government advice and has no “extra” food in the house. She’s choosing to go into work despite being given the option to wfh and happily bleating on about “You need to have faith, I have faith I won’t get it.” She is asthmatic, I have heart conditions and the lack of care from her is just crazy, it’s like talking to a brick wall.

ofwarren · 18/03/2020 09:23

I can get on both @Justalittlebitfurther
I'm accessing this post by clicking on a link in my email where someone has tagged me

TiddleTaddleTat · 18/03/2020 09:24

Absolutely recognise the tsunami analogy - no one has listened until it's too late.
I have lurked on the threads for months, and had a Brexit stash for a long time. Only at the start of Feb a friend visited and laughed at my 'apocalypse' stash. We joked about getting a shotgun and a generator. Doesn't sound so mad now!
My elderly parents still haven't quite 'got it'. My DM is going out to the pharmacy - says it's fine as she's under 70, whereas DF is over. They'll 'just do an online shop' when they need to. There is not a single supermarket delivering to their area and all available slots are booked up (up to 7th April)
People still have their heads in the sand !!

VivaLeBeaver · 18/03/2020 09:26

@ofwarren. By the side of the big word TALK at the top of the page there's a drop down arrow, click that. Then click customise. Scroll down and tere's a manage hidden threads bit.

Jade1976 · 18/03/2020 09:27

Don't use tweezers to remove a bee sting, it can push the poison out. Use a credit card..

ofwarren · 18/03/2020 09:28

Thank you Viva!
I'm back. Phew

nightshade1 · 18/03/2020 09:35

My Dh used to laugh and roll his eyes at me, telling me I should have been a scout because I'm always prepared - always in good humour mind and he did build me storage shelves pre brexit with little complaint.

Now his tune has changed a bit and he announced the other day I was right and it's panning out just like I said said it would weeks ago...... there may have been a few pointed I told you so's.

The biggest issue is my Ex and his access to the older children as he has them eow while his job is outdoors with limited contact with others- I don't trust him to take social distancing seriously. They are at home this weekend so I'm hoping by next weekend the rules will be more stringent.

Neome · 18/03/2020 09:44

Hi ofwarren just sending a virtual hug.

Waitasecond · 18/03/2020 09:59

@ofwarren I feel like people are passing through the stages of grief coming to terms with this. Some of my family are moving from the denial stage to the anger stage. Anger at me for being worried, anger at the world for taking this seriously, anger at supermarkets, anger at anything related to Covid-19.

ofwarren · 18/03/2020 10:01

@waitasecond
Yes! That really makes sense.
I totally forgot about that.

ofwarren · 18/03/2020 10:01

Thank you @neome

lexloofah · 18/03/2020 10:03

Hasa it takes about a week to get a sourdough starter ready to bake with. I had to start again a few weeks ago as mine lurking in the back of the fridge for over a year did not look good.

I did a tablespoon of plain or bread flour and about the same of water to mix to a runny batter like consistency in an old clean jar, sheet of kitchen roll or clingfilm with a few holes in on top, held in place with elastic band or mason jar ring. I know many methods have the quantities weighed out but cannot be bothered, it only matters for the artisan, purist types

Each day discard a bit, say half, and add more flour and water, you don't need loads to bake with, my go to loaf only needs 30g starter

Mine now hangs out in the fridge for a few days then takes about 2-3 days to refresh ready for baking again

permanentlyfrazzled1 · 18/03/2020 10:06

Hey @ofwarren you’re back! Have missed your pertinent updates! Sorry you’re on the blunt end of things with your family: I think sometimes fear induces people to put barriers up and lash out at anyone who attempts to remove that barrier - you’ve done all that you can.
@WeBuiltCisCityOnSexistRoles @CakeOnMe I was always last to be chosen in PE as well, so my heart goes out to you both: the sting never seems to truly go away, even in adult life, does it.
I’m off to get my ‘click and collect’ from my local Asda so will report back on the state of affairs. I’ve already been notified that about 10 items are unavailable, including the holy grail of toilet roll, so I’ll see what sort of list I’m left with to take into a physical supermarket in a few days time.
DH was signed off by Gp beginning of the week when he phoned to discuss his meds, declaring that with his health, a school is the last place he should be at the moment, then school emailed a list of high risk conditions which will necessitate some staff working from home for the foreseeable future. DH’s condition isn’t listed specifically on there, but his rheumatoid arthritis suppresses the immune system, as does some of the medication he takes to treat it, and Gp has already offered to phone school if they’re tricky over this, so I think we’re safe for a while now.
Got to go instruct the teens and DH on how to run the production line of disinfecting every shopping item on my return, before putting it into a mixture of places. I’m getting a bit confused with what’s for now and what’s for a bit later on, and where it’s all stored, especially as we’re fortunate to have lots of storage space - the teens live in a static in the back garden which we’ve commandeered as a walk-in pantry.
Then this afternoon we’re going to have a look at a new board game with some sweeties - such an exciting life I lead!
Stay safe everyone!
