Medical abortion at 5 weeks

Anyone else gone through this at 5 weeks? I've not had a massive about of bleeding and the pain was quite minimal, I did feel feverish for a while though but took ibuprofen which seemed to help that.

Tuesday 4pm - took mifepristone orally
Yesterday 5pm - took 4 misoprostrol vaginally - some very light bleeding and mild cramping
Yesterday 8.30pm - took 2 misoprostrol vaginally
Then I started to have stronger stomach cramps but just like period pains really, then I felt feverish and took ibuprofen, went to the toilet about half 11 and not much bleeding on my pad but a lot came out in the toilet. Couldn't see any big clots but it did look like a lot of blood and some small clots.

I'm bleeding quite lightly now, I'm hoping that it has worked and it's just because I'm quite early on that I haven't had quite the horrible experience I expected!

Hi there, over this weekend I have just gone through similar at 5.5 weeks. I had quite severe cramping for about 5 hours post taking the misoprostrol and quite a lot of bleeding every time I got up to go to the bathroom during the night. (Took the miso at 3.30pm and started bleeding at 5.25pm). I can only remember one significant clot though, other than that they were just small period type clots (perhaps a little bigger). I was expecting much more bleeding/clotting but I’m hoping that it’s linked to the stage of the pregnancy I was at. The doctor told me it was a few millimetres. It’s a bit nerve racking because of the fear of failure, just have to wait to take the test. Today I am resting and having some cramps/bleeding but mostly feel normal and am thinking that I could have gone to work!

I really hope all goes well for you!

Thanks for replying (mumsnet won't let me have my username back), yes that sounds very similar. I was a bit naughty and did a pg test yesterday and it was negative, maybe the squintiest squinter of a line but I'm confident the process has worked. I will take the test Bpas sent me in a few weeks too obviously.

Hopefully it just wasn't too awful as we were very early on, hope all goes well for you too 💐

greenghosty2 · 26/04/2022 07:55

They sent me codeine and I'm glad I held off taking it as I really didn't need it!

Thanks so much for your response, and that seems like positive news from your side! I may do the same towards the end of the week. Good luck with it all, I’m crossing fingers and toes! 😘

Hi, I just wanted to share for anybody that is also going through this and is as scared as I was!

I opted for the ‘pills by post’ with BPAS and we worked out from my last period I was 5 weeks 4 days. I called BPAS on Saturday, had my telephone consultation on Monday and the pills arrived Wednesday. Even in this short amount of time I worked myself into such a state of anxiety through some horror stories I read online.

I took the Mifepristone on Wednesday lunch time and had no side effects at all. Thursday at 1.40 I took 2x ibuprofen and half an hour later inserted the 4 Misoprostol. After 2 hours I had very light cramping and started to bleed. I then passed a jelly like clot probably the size of a strawberry but I didn’t look closely I just flushed this away. I was having period like cramps and at 5.30pm took the other 2 Misoprostol and at 6pm took 2x ibuprofen. It felt like a heavy period but totally manageable. I did not have many clots but I guess this is because I am very early on? By 8PM I was STARVING and had some dinner (I thought I wasn’t going to be able to breathe let alone eat!). I fell asleep about 10PM and woke up to strong cramps at 12PM so I did take 2x codeine, mainly because I wanted to get a good night sleep.

I have woken up this morning and feel normal.I put a pad inside a huge tenalady nappy to sleep and slept on a towel but I didn’t flood the pad at all. I feel a little sore and tired but nothing that a day of Netflix won’t sort out. Again I feel really hungry so make sure you stock up on your favourite foods!

I wanted to share my experience to help anybody going through this scary time. Happy to chat and answer questions X

Renée9 · 13/05/2022 18:38

Thanks for sharing! Honestly these kind of threads and feedback helped me so much. Your experience sounds very similar to mine. Now 2.5 weeks post and completely back to normal, and feel very relieved. I really hope the next couple of weeks go well for you. For reference, If any help, I bled for about 8 days post, gradually reducing, then spotted for another full week. I had very little pain after the first day and all my symptoms completely went after 7 days (tiredness, bloating, sore breasts). Very best to you and hope all goes well xx

Sunshine3726 · 13/05/2022 18:49

Thank you so much - that is super helpful as I wasn't sure how long to expect bleeding for. I hope you do not mind me asking but have you already done a pregnancy test or are you leaving it a little longer? I am unsure when this is best to be done?

Thanks again x

Renée9 · 15/05/2022 17:44

Happy to help! I was advised to do one after 3 weeks (which is today). However I ended up doing one on Wednesday earlier this week because I was feeling very anxious. Thankfully it was negative. I then did the second today just to reassure myself and it was negative. I used the tests that were given to me which are 25 miu which I guess are the ones you’ll be using too-? I hope you’re feeling ok 😘

Renée9 · 15/05/2022 17:48

Sorry, just realised I didn’t answer your question very well. I think probably best to wait until your symptoms have completely passed and the bleeding has stopped because the last thing you want is unnecessary anxiety. That was my thinking but I really sympathise with the desire to confirm that is has worked as soon as possible! I did actually end up calling the helpline one week after I had taken the pills because I had suddenly started feeling very sick, and the nurse said it was almost certainly a delayed reaction to the medication + anxiety, and when I asked if I could take the test after two weeks, she advised me not to as it would probably be inaccurate. I hope this helps!

Sunshine3726 · 15/05/2022 19:09

Thank you so much and I am pleased you are ok. That has reassured me to hang on until I am supposed to until I do a test! Like you said it would cause unnecessary anxiety.

Thanks - for anybody reading this, 3 days after and I have been out shopping and for a BBQ today! Everyone's body reacts differently but just to show it's not always a horror story! X

SEJ1789 · 24/05/2022 21:48

Thanks for sharing your stories very reassuring. I’m due my consultation Thursday and then hope I can get the pills to my home. I’m very early (I assume it’s probably the same as you with being 5 weeks technically) I took a clear blue date test and has put it at 2-3 weeks. I have no symptoms currently and want it done before they start it doesn’t feel like I’m pregnant. I feel sad as I would want the first time I found out I was pregnant to be a happy one but it’s not, both me and partner know it’s not the right time and with it being so early even though it’s sad we think it’s better to end it now, rather than have a baby we can’t financially provide for and give it the best life we can.

Hi ladies.
I am having a medical abortion tomorrow.. I'm not nervous but I am 5 weeks along & I don't know what to expect. I know this is the right decision for me and I am just wondering is there anything from your experiences that I should expect. Also how soon after the abortion could I get pregnant again?

Sunshine3726 · 29/05/2022 20:13

Hi,
I was about the same at 5 weeks so we could possibly have similar experiences. I would just make sure you have plenty of pads, a hot water bottle and a few days off work. The worst thing for me was having to wear pads instead of tampons as the bleeding is quite heavy and I was constantly paranoid about leaking through into clothes although this never happened. X

Rach2022 · 29/05/2022 20:30

Thank you @Sunshine3726 for the tip. I am used to wearing pads so I don't mind that. And also used to very painful periods so I'm hoping it's nothing too extreme. Thanks for sharing, I hope you are doing okay now x

Sunshine3726 · 29/05/2022 20:41

I was the same so pain wise it wasn’t too bad for me personally. Thank you, it will have been 3 weeks this Thursday so will be pleased once I can do the test and put this behind me. Hope you are ok! X

SEJ1789 · 02/06/2022 15:08

Hi not sure if any of you are still looking at this thread but was wondering if your tests came back negative or not?

i started the second pills this morning and barely any bleeding on my pad. I had very intense cramps just before 3hrs in and could definitely feel something come out. Since then I took the extra 2 pills at 3hrs after phoning msi as I wasn’t sure if to take them if I thought I had passed. But as I haven’t been bleeding a lot (or I suppose what I imagined) I’m worried already it’s not working. I have felt what I thought was a gush of blood twice since which came out when I went to the loo but nothing really coming out apart from that. Still cramping but totally manageable. I’ve moved from being anxious about one thing to being anxious about another

Sunshine3726 · 02/06/2022 19:19

Hi @SEJ1789

I totally feel your pain and anxiety but today has been 3 weeks since mine and I tested negative this morning. I worried too, totally overthinking the whole situation. I would say my bleeding was probably heaviest the on the 3rd/4th day and even then it was like a period.

If you have any questions please feel free to ask as it is good to talk about it! x

I am literally about to take my second lot of tablets now and I am petrified.

The first tablet gave me no side effects until this morning and I have felt as a sick as anything. I've not been able to eat I just keep feeling like I'm going to throw up.

So so scared for what is to come, Sad

I am only 5w 5d so I'm hoping this won't be too horrendous!

Sunshine3726 · 03/06/2022 16:22

@GemLast I had no side effects from the first pill only nausea so very similar! Just relax somewhere comfy, hot water bottle, warm drinks & pain killers if you need them!

hope you are ok x

SEJ1789 · 03/06/2022 17:33

I had Nausea with the first pills from an hour after taking them until I took my second set was bloody awful. I’m now the day after the second set and feeling pretty ok within myself physically, mentally the lead up has been worse for me and truly felt I have made the right decision. Hope it goes ok for you as soon as I think it passed the intense pain went and nowhere near as much blood as I imagined. It wasnt anywhere near as bad as I had imagined it would be. Take care of yourself x

GemLast · 03/06/2022 17:35

So I've had tablets in me for two hours. No pain, no bleeding 🥺 surely this isn't right?

SEJ1789 · 03/06/2022 17:55

@GemLast I had cramping but no major pain, not much happened for me until about 3hours. I went to the loo maybe 2hrs in as my pad was clean and there was a bit of blood if I wiped but was expecting it to be a lot. I suddenly got intense cramps just before 3hrs which had me doubled up in pain. I went to the loo and felt something come out I’m pretty sure it was it as the intense pain went back to cramps. I inserted them rather than dissolved in my mouth as the nurse said it would work better. Have they given you the extra two tablets? I phoned msi as I thought I had passed it at 3hrs but nothing much was coming out on pad (it still isn’t to be honest) they told me to take them just in case, which were due at 3hrs in.

This is good to read.

So it's 3 hours now, should I put them in? I inserted the others vaginally too. I don't want them to coincide with it coming away though 🥺🙈 would be just my luck!

What a nightmare this is turning into! X

SEJ1789 · 03/06/2022 18:07

im not sure who you went through but do they have a support line at all you could call? Marie Stopes have been really lovely and I called a couple of times about a few concerns and they advised what to do. They should be able to tell you what’s best but on my information leaflet it said to put one either side in your mouth between your gums and cheek and leave them there for 30mins and then swallow them with some water if not much had happened after 3hrs x
