1st timer, 5 weeks, age 44, pregnant from egg donation

I think I must be an unusual case. Hoping I might 'meet' a few people on here that share at least one of my unusual features.

Found out a week ago that so far egg donation has been succesful, but but its very early days.

Expected to feel elated and happy, but Im just feeling grumpy and worried all the time. I guess its just because this baby was so hard fought for, and now its just down to me and baby to make it work. Very worried.

Please say 'hi', even if your not an egg recipient like me.

I think everyone feels grumpy and worried by default, can imagine it's even worse when it's been so hard to come by, yes. Will you have an early scan to see how things are going?

Yes scan in 10 days, to check whether there is one or two, and hopefully to check all going OK. Hopefully at some point I will feel happy and releived!

There's a 40 and pregnant group thread and seems quite active.

early stage pg is sick-making and hormonal at the best of times, let alone when you've obv. been through a lot to get there...

Ditto to what miamix said! I'm pregnant by "natural" means, but after 2 miscarriages, it's been nerve racking. Add in that I've been feeling awful since my 4th week and I think I've had plenty of reason to explain the grumps.

Congratulations! It is a nerve wracking time for anyone, it must have taken a lot for you to get this far. Excuse my ignorance, but is the process like part of the IVF process, ie the bit when they fertilize the eggs and put them in?

I am also 44 and 5wks pregnant. Feel very stressed out, incredibly grumpy, and generally a moany old bag!

I have 3 dcs, which I know I am incredibly lucky to have, but always wanted a 4th.

I've had 4 mc in 4 years (the last this feb), and was finally coming to terms with never having another.

I suppose I'm just finding it hard to believe that things will go well for me this time.

Anyway Tyro I'm sure listening to my moaning is not why you started the thread!

IME, which is not the same as yours except in having wanted a baby and then become pregnant, wanting a baby and being pregnant provoke utterly different emotions. I felt really pretty distant from DD throughout my whole pregnancy. I had been desperate for her, and adore her now. Pregnancy is just a different ketle of fish.

Congratulations to you Tyro!!! Not quite the same circumstances as you, but I'm 11 weeks pregnant at the age of 43 after being told I could never have children. After the initial shock I have had days where I have been grumpy, fretful, stressed, bawling my eyes out etc but on other days I am calm and contented.
I haven't experienced what I expected yet though and thats elation and I think its because I'm being cautious until my 12 week scan on 10th June.
Good luck to you - try and go with it and take each day as it comes. There's an over 40's thread which is great to swap stories and experiences with the more mature laydees

DomesticGOdess, egg donation is exactly like IVF, except the eggs that are fertiised are provided by a donor.

Pregnancy should be a happy time, but with both of mine I was worried all the time. You just want it so much that you don't believe it will last!

With dd1 I had pre eclampsia, so I hated being pregnant with dd2 (so much so, that I am not doing it again!) I didn't have PE with dd2, but it was there, as a threat the whole time & I spent 9 months looking for symptoms! Not a good way to enjoy pregnancy!

Just take each day as it comes & enjoy the fact that you have a baby growing inside of you!

Hi, Tyro, congratulations!

Your feelings about your pregnancy are very likely to change as it progresses: seeing a heartbeat, then arms and legs on a scan makes it seem more 'real', then first kicks and increasing tummy girth . Also your hormones will settle and you will be able to feel more positive.
Your current feelings are so very understandable and normal for what I would imagine is a much longed and fought for pregnancy. So congratulations again !

FWIW, I just had DS4 a couple of weeks before my 44th birthday. I have also had 4 MMCs and much as my situation is of course v different from yours, I do understand the lack of excitement as you just don't know how it is going to end and investing too much emotionally early on is just too risky....

I do share a few of your 'unusual' features

1. I've two kids by IVF, my younger was born via donor egg conception when I was 41

2)I'm now 44 and five weeks pregnant - found out on Saturday - naturally and by accident after 12 years of apparent infertility and definitely only having one fallopian tiube

3. I feel quite strange about it - a very wierd mix of elated, worried as hell (what if I lose it, what if's not OK due to my dud eggs?), very bewildered and unsettled and a bit nauseous!

Anyway, nice to hear all the variations on late, longed-for and unexpected pregnancies, and good luck everyone

Im having a scan next Monday, to check all is progressing well and to find out whether there is one or two in here. DH is definitely up for two!

My GP amazed me with his efficicency & co-ordination & has got me one tomorrow (5 wks, 5dys) - I guess it's too early to see the heartbeat but hopefully I'll see a blob the right number of millimetres long! (and just the one blob, fingers crossed!)

I'm 37 and 32 weeks pg with my first and much longed for after 3 years of trying and 2 rounds of IVF.
I didn't feel excited for the first 12 weeks as I was trying to protect myself from any more disappointment after our long journey to become pregnant. I cried at 10 weeks (xmas day) when I found out I had a 95% chance of carrying to term having got that far, it seemed too good to be true!
With each week the pregnancy has got more real and the major milestones were each scan (especially the first where you will hopefully see one or two little hearts beating) and of course the wonderful feeling of the first little flutterings inside which I had at 18 weeks. Now I'm awake all night being kicked and taking gaviscon but it's such an amazing feeling having seen the bundle of cells at 3 days post fertilisation and seeing the tiny dot of fluid being implanted inside me. Every pregnancy is a miracle but an IVF one feels particularly miraculous, even if pregnancy itself is hard work most of the time!
