I know this is a strange title, and I would love to know other peoples strange morning sickness symptoms that are not related to food!

I fould I hated the feel of anything around my belly, so lived in my mother's nities for the worse of it!

I hated taking a bath or shower because the feel of water on my skin was uncomfortable.

I stopped wearing makeup, not only because I didn't feel like it, but more because I didn't like the smell, the feeling of it on my face, and the taste of anything on my lips, and I have been wearing make-up nearly every day for 15 years!! That also includes lipsil or chapstick so my lips got so dry and cracked, the corners of my mouth split and I looked and felt awful!

I also got travel sick, which I know is a common one!

Anyone else??

I've never had "proper" MS but I'm now almost 16 weeks and ads for restaurant chains on the telly make me yak.

Surfermum · 27/01/2010 21:02

I couldn't look at cheese and onion crisp packets. Even if they hadn't been opened. If we went to the pub with our friends I had to sit at another table if anyone had them otherwise I'd heave.

LizzieHart · 27/01/2010 21:04

Smell of dog or horse snot made me heave, and I couldn't do the washing up without heaving! DH is a little sceptical about that one though!

desperatelymissingbluecheese from your other post - yes I hate cleaning my teeth now, yet having furry teeth makes me heave! I am OD-ing on mouth wash now!

I had severe ms (hyperemesis). Most shower gels/deodorants made me physically ill.

My mother bought me some gorgeous orange scented gel for my birthday when I was about 9 weeks. I cried and cried as it distressed me so much.

I threw dh's bodysprays away and he went on to unfragranced deodorant.

decafgirl · 27/01/2010 21:16

Get the bus?! I used to get very unhappy looks from the other passengers on my way to work - it was still better than attempting to drive with a plastic storage box on the passenger seat though!

NinthWave · 27/01/2010 21:18

I was the opposite when it came to teeth cleaning - I got a real craving for it and spent most of my third trimester brushing my teeth. Lovely bristly goodness

Karrierbag · 27/01/2010 22:01

Peel potatoes! They texture used to make me heave, still does sometimes at 33 weeks but not as bad now!

boodleboot · 27/01/2010 22:04

people smoking.....even if i just see them doing it from a bus window or on tv....not anywhere near them, just seeing them stick those filthy things in their mouths and then all that smoke.....uuurghh. it makes me RETCH....

LizzieHart · 27/01/2010 22:17

I just had new potatoes for dinner and ended up having to peel the skin off them!

Well, I am off all the foods I usually love. Although I am off most food, I suppose.

Other than that, my sense of smell has become really sensitive and I can't stand to wear perfume, and the smell of my pet rats is making me so sick I can't even go in the room with them ATM.

I also no longer like being cuddled by DH in bed, which is awful as he wants to cuddle me all the time.

indigobarbie · 27/01/2010 23:31

the smell of garlic bread from 50 paces or the look of the texture of meat, esp bacon. eughghh. Also loud noises or people talking too much round about me, I seem to be overly sensitive!
I try to eat fish and it just tastes like having a mouthful of very strong cod liver oil. YUCK, and I like a bit of Salmon, well I did before pg...

IckleJess · 28/01/2010 10:47

I can't bear to listen to one of DS's CDs, he played it constantly during the early weeks of this pregnancy and I still can't stand hearing it and am now 19 weeks. There is also a song that was out during my 1st pregnancy that I cannot hear even now, 15 years later, without feeling incredibly nauseous (Boom,Boom,Boom by the Outthere Brothers if anyone's interested lol)

The sound of the heating being on - I guess it's the water running through the pipes - it would wake me up at 5.30am each morning and as soon as I awoke I felt sick. Still don't like hearing it.

uring my 2nd pregnancy (am now on 4th) I was convinced the fridge smelt awful - although I was the only one who could smell it - and no amount of bleaching it helped so I just couldn't go in it. When I had to use it, like when DH was at work, I would take a huge breath then hold it whilst I quickly got out what I needed!

Josie22 · 28/01/2010 12:58

I have some room fragrance bamboo stick things that I got from Zara Home which could not bear the smell of when suffering from ms and even now they make me feel a bit wierd. DH had to wrap them up in cling film and put them in the spare room. Also shower gel- had a lovely Korres fig one that literally couldn't let near me.
Tube into work was hell. Used to have to get off at random stations to sit on a bench for a few minutes just to steady my stomach (started obsessively carrying around plastic bags for just in case emergencies!!).
Also and most bizarrely, couldn't cope with the idea of knitting while ms was bad either which is wierd as I find it so calming usually (does that make me sound ancient?!).

MandaHugNKiss · 28/01/2010 13:05

I had a hard time kissing DP. It was a combination of not wanting anything in/near my mouth (let alone his tongue, ew!) and the fact I could smell every. Single. Thing. He'd eaten over the course of the day.

I also had a really hard time going supermarket shopping. It's almost funny thinking of it now, 20 weeks after it kinda ended, but gagging in the asiles just from the thought of being surrounded by The Enemy (food!) was awful.

suiledonne · 28/01/2010 13:10

I had hyperemesis in both pregnancies so I have a long list but the ones that stand out are

  1. the smell of raw potatoes - couldn't peel them - when not pregnant not even aware they have a smell when raw
  1. onions - love them usually but couldn't have them in the house when pregnant
  1. DH's shower gel - reacted so badly to that one that he can never use it again. It gives me a nostalgic sickness even now and dd2 is 14 months old.
  1. Baby wipes with fragrance
LizzieHart · 28/01/2010 17:49

midori1999 Ditto - I couldn't stand anything more than a kiss, and in bed, I didn't like the weight of my DH arm over me.

IckleJess I couldn't open the fridge either! The smell is not an 'off' smell, but what ever it was, I couldn't stomach it either!

cleaning my teeth is a real struggle and often ends in disaster. I can't bear anything or anyone touching my stomach and I have now found that I can't even touch bananas without retching. I was trying to describe this to my DH the other day and found that just thinking about bananas set me off!.

FlowerBee · 28/01/2010 18:03

Am 18 weeks now and pretty much feel normal now but had horrendous morning sickness (and hyperemesis).

The smell of my DHs colognes and deoderants would make me gag and puke. Also i could smell mens deodorants from 100 paces, e.g. if my younger brother had just entered the house.

And kissing and hugging my poor DH was also uncomfortable and made me feel worse!

the smell of people who have been mucking out horses or the smell of cow manure (btw live on a farm so very difficult!)

loud noises for some reason, esp tv on very loud.

Some programmes make me feel sick as associated with first trimester pregnancy - America's Next top Model and Ghost Hunters - very strange!

another one here who can't stand to kiss DH - just the smells of food bleurgh!!

WhiteRoses · 28/01/2010 19:29

I'm sick right now... Why did I just read this thread?

thislittlesisterlola · 28/01/2010 20:30

raw carrots- the smell its wrong. Bananas- the smell if i smell anything banana like i heave. Stuffing- texture, not to mention the indigestion. Air fresheners are hurrendous, esp. When they have been used for their purpose in a bathroom. I smelt after kissing dp the chocolate biscuit he ate several hours before i saw him

bethylou · 28/01/2010 20:33

The smell of DH - still a problem now from time to time at more than 8 months!!

Mimi1996 · 21/07/2021 13:46

@LizzieHart I know this post was a very long time ago but I’m relating to it now. I am almost 9 weeks and I can’t stand my partner trying to cuddle, kiss me and have his arm over me at night too. How long did that last for you? I feel so bad! I thought it was only me being this way!
