How likely is it really? I have a 10w.o. and have not been taking precautions .... but figured am likely not to get pg if bf. Perfectly happy to get pg again but doctor said should wait at least 4 months ........

yes, of course you can!

using LAM as a contraceptive can be very effective but only if you meet all the criteria. I think these are:

baby under 6 months old
baby exclusively breastfed (100%)
baby still feeding at least 2 hourly (and inc night feeds)
no periods

i think there are more, will look it up in a mo

of course

and you can get pregnant using lots of other types of contraception too

thisisyesterday · 28/05/2009 20:13

ooh i am lying about the every 2 hours thing, sure i read that somewhere.
but baby does need to be feeding on demand

lljkk · 28/05/2009 20:15

Not likely at all (maybe 95% protection) in first 6 months IF your periods haven't come back AND it's exclusive breastfeeding. But once periods are back or 6 months have passed or baby is having something besides breastmilk, fertility zooms up near normal.

moodywren · 28/05/2009 20:15

You definately can get pregnant when bf I have twice, although in both cases babies weren't fully breastfed. Ds1 was 7mth old and had started solids at 6mths when I fell pregnant with ds2. Ds2 was 14mths and still bf about 4 times a day when I fell with ds3. Think alot of it depends of how much baby is bf

Oh ok .... I figured since I am not the most fertile of people (DD1 is IVF baby after 4 years of ttc............. followed by surprise natural conception of DD2 10 months later!!!), that all will be well.

But DD2 does get 1 bottle of formula a day, and is sleeping 7-8 hour stretches at night sometimes (how lucky am I?)......

but I just cannot face condoms

and as I said, if I get pg I will be v happy

but I did have my 2nd CS only 9 weeks ago

am I being really irresponsible???

not irresponsible at all if you'd be happy to have another baby so soon.

i would wait a little longer, if only for the fact you have had had major surgery. your body needs time to heal and recover. that said, it might be too late !

Madigan · 28/05/2009 20:28

Beautifully put, Hanaflower. Thank you.

... I think I am in denial TBH, because of history of infertility, I really don;t believe I could get pregnant so easily ..... well, will have to see....

Well took nearly 2 years to get pregnant with ds2.

Currently pregnant with dc3 - conceived whilst bf ds2. A surprise to say the least!

Madigan · 28/05/2009 20:33

Ahhh! How old was DC1 when you got pg?

OP posts:
Madigan · 28/05/2009 20:33

I mean, how old was DC2?

OP posts:
KingRolo · 28/05/2009 20:34

that you are back at it after only 10 weeks. Contraception not really an issue until the 6 month mark here!

traceybath · 28/05/2009 20:37

He was 10 months but still feeding a lot and no period.

traceybath · 28/05/2009 20:37

We were supposedly using condoms but apparently they don't work when sat in the bedside draw!

Madigan · 28/05/2009 20:38

That must have been a shock!!! Were you relying on bf as contraception and, personal question, were you happy to be pregnant again/so soon???

OP posts:
Madigan · 28/05/2009 20:39

sorry - crossed post....

We weren't planning on any more children and its taken me a while to come round to the idea.

However it'll be fine and now at 31 weeks am looking forward to it
