Bleeding heavily at 12 weeks - what do i do?

I am around 12 weeks pg and have been bleeding very lightly (bit of blood when I wipe) for nearly 3 weeks. I had a scan at 9 weeks for reassurance and the baby was fine with a strong heartbeat. The bleeding slowed last weekend and I thought all was well.

However yesterday the bleeding became more intense and is now more like a light period (pink to red blood is appearing on my panty liner which I have to change every 3 hours or so). This has continued today. Is there anything I should be doing? I have my 12 week scan on Thursday so I really want to wait til then to find out for sure.

Is there any hope? And there's no way of stopping a miscarriage is there?

If the baby has a proven heartbeat, the odds are very much in her favour.

There are many reasons for bleeding, such a cervical erosion. Bleeding is never a good sign, but if you have had a heartbeat, then you can be cautiously optimistic.

If you are miscarrying, there isn't really anything you can do to stop it. The main advice is bedrest. You can go to the EPU but there isn't really anything they can do except reassure you or confirm the worst.

BTW, I had week-long light to moderate bleeding at 8 weeks with #5, and she is about to turn 7 (and is a joy).

No I'm sorry there's no way of stopping one and nothing you can do. But it is by no means definite that you are miscarrying. Do you have any pain with the bleeding? Many people bleed and all is well in the end. I did, three times, and my son was fine but I have also had a m/c. I know how interminable and painful it is to wait to find out what's going on.

Thank you both - I have no pain at all. But I just don't see how the baby can withstand this amount of bleeding if you see what I mean.

But could your cervix really bleed this much from an erosion? It's not even like I've had any sex....

You can get cupfuls from an erosion.

I would suggest bedrest until your scheduled scan. It's only a day and a half to wait.

The heartbeat really is a good sign.

I need to vent.

I am forty bloody one and my dh is over fifty, it's not as if we have much time. I have got to 12 weeks of feeling rubbish every day, heard a heartbeat and then this happens. It is so not fair.

scienceteacher - thank you for that. I do feel a bit better, maybe there is some hope. I guess I'd better put my feet up as you say and then I will feel I have given it my best shot.

Any other tales of hope or advice more than welcome.

Hi Doggus,sorry to hear the bleeding has got worse. My cousin bled a scary amount at 12, 15 and 17 weeks - she was 38 and on her first. Complete bed rest each time and she went on to have a healthy baby girl. Focus on that heart beat. I hope all is well on Thursday, will be thinking of you. x

Hope all is well for you. I bled a scary amount on and off between 7 and 10 weeks - and my son was fine (didn't do much for my blood pressure, however). I rested a lot and tried (unsuccessfully) not to worry. Fingers crossed you get lots of reassurance on Thursday.

Thank you HT and flaming. I am going to go and put my feet up and watch a film to take my mind off it. Sorry for venting, I sound like a spoilt child, I am just really stressed.

doggus I bled until 15wks with DD3 as I had organised membrane seperation (complicated way of saying the membranes above the sac were seoerated and had blood inbetween) I had to be put on bedrest as much as possible with 2 young children and it soon passed - she's now upstairs sleeping

bleeding not good but doesn't automatically mean a miscarriage. Please put your feet up, rest and try not to panic. Thurs will hopefully give you some answers

I bled for three weeks 13 weeks to 16 weeks - wasn't heavy but was scary. It was a cervical erosion - the cervix becomes very sensitive and can bleed easily in pregnancy. Everything was fine. So yes, it might be nothing at all and your chances of miscarriage fall dramatically if a heartbeat has been detected at nine weeks. But of course there are no guarantees so putting your feet up sounds a good plan and if you're feeling worried I would head in sooner and have another scan tbh. I always think things are worth checking out sooner rather than later - then you give the responsibility of it all to the experts which takes away needless anxiety. Wishing you the best of luck.

ps: in my completely non-expert opinion the fact htat you had bleeding before and the scan showed everything was ok then it seems likely that this bleed is from the same source, which seems positive to me. When you do get scanned again, assuming all is well, try and get them to identify source of bleed, then if it is, for e.g. cervical erosion you'll feel happier by understanding it all better.

someone else who had quite a bit of bleeeding here but now has a lovely baby girl. i had quite a lot around 13 weeks.
i just lay on the bed (terrified) each time. if you really can't wait till thursday you could go to GP tomorrow and see if they can find a heartbeat with the doppler thingy, but it maybe too early for them to find this even if the baby is just fine. i guess if you can manage the stress waiting till thursday is probably the best option .but take it easy and try to be optimistic.

Doggus, how are you today?
I guess at this stage you are best just to wait until your scan tomorrow. You may not be able to HEAR the heartbeat if you go to the GP today and that will woryy you even more.
I REALLY hope everything works out okay for you; it's a terrible, anxious time for you. As others have said, it could be something and it could be nothing.

Oh doggus i'm so sorry. I think like the others have said as you have had bleeding previously and seen a baby with a heartbeat the percentage of this progressing into a healthy pregnancy is high. One more day to wait and all will become clear. It must be so frustrating for you.

I have also known people who have had bleeding and gone on to have healthy pregnancies.

Doggus, a friend of mine had heavy bleeding at around 9 weeks and then again a couple of weeks later. It turned out that it was a blood clot inside her uterus, and it made no difference whatsoever to the baby. She's now 29 weeks

I really hope that the scan goes well tomorrow and that you get good news, instead of hearing the words you are fearing. Good luck x

Thank you all so much. I am going to see the GP this afternoon in the vain hope she might have a Doppler to hand...if not my scan is in the afternoon tomorrow. The bleeding has got worse overnight with a couple of big clots so I am not feeling encouraged...

Still no pain however which I guess is positive and I like the points a few of you made that the bleeding might be from the same source and therefore OK.

I am terrified of the actual miscarriage itself and of the scan when they say 'I'm sorry...'.

doggus - will be thinking of you. I bled very heavily between weeks 5 and 8 - to the point where it completely stained the shorts I was wearing and I was taken to hospital in an ambulance (I was on holiday in Lanzarote). I had a 7 week scan where the heartbeat was detected but still bled for a week after that.

All was fine with me, and dd is nearly 2. Hope all goes well tomorrow. Please let us know how you get on

Thank you all so so much, I really appreciate all your support. The GP didn't do anything, said it sounded like a miscarriage and they would tell me definitively at the scan

I will be back tomorrow afternoon/evening with news, thank you again.

Hopefully, your GP is talking rubbish. I had light bleeding on and off during my first pregnancy, and a really heavy bleed at 12 weeks. DD turns 4 next month.

My plancenta was anterior, and I have since learnt that this can result in bleeding (not that anyone ever tells you this at the time)
