Missed a period, son is 5 months. Is this normal post-baby weirdness or could I be pregnant?

I have done 2 tests and they were both negative, the 1st one was when I was a few days late, the 2nd test was last week. I'm pretty sure I'm not pregnant (it is possible but chances are slim) but I'm approaching the point where my AF is due again, so if it doesn't arrive that'll be 2 I've missed (last one started 19th Nov 08). I had occasional nausea which comes andgoes and is not so bad now, but that was what made me wonder, IYSWIM.

I know its normal for a woman's cycle to be irregular after giving birth, and my son is approaching 5 months old. But the first 2 periods I had after having him were regular as clockwork. Could I be pregnant? It seems unlikely.. What are the possible causes of my no show?? I've heard stress can stop things, but that doesn't explain the slight nausea between meals. Surely if I conceived, the pregnancy hormones would be strong enough by now to show up on tests? I used a clearblue digital last time...

It's doing my head in a bit not knowing. If I don't get AF soon I thought about going to the docs, but I don't want to waste their time
Wise words, anyone?!

CV - how many weeks after your last AF did you do the second test?

You CAN'T get a false positive, but you CAN get a false negative.

Have you BDed enough to convince you it is at all plausible you might have got pregant? What does DH think chances are (have you spoken to him?)

I know you know all of this but you are so incredibly fertile during these first few months after giving birth, so it's not outide the realms of possibility.

No need to go to docs unless you get a further neg test if your next AF doesn't arrive.

Everyone is different, but like you, AF was regular as clockwork once it started back, though it didn't arrive until around 6 months after birth because I was BFing...

Are you BFing at all, or even partly? This could account for some disruption to your cycle, but the nausea would give me some cause for concern. Mine was so bad I knew instantly - the sensation was unmistakeable...

Spoo · 18/01/2009 18:55

I would go to the doctors if I were you. I don't think you are wasting their time.

Sycamoretree · 18/01/2009 18:58

CV - would you keep this baby if you were pregnant? If so, there's not much point in going to the docs as their tests wouldn't necessarily be any more sensitive than the clearblue test.

But if you just need to talk it over for some piece of mind, then go for it. They will not think you are making a fuss.

cheerfulvicky · 18/01/2009 19:13

Hi, thanks for responses. 2nd test was approx 7-8 weeks after start of last AF. I am not BFing, and I would happily have another baby if need be, though it's a tad soon
I can't actually remember when we last 'did the deed', I think we may have around my fertile time but I'm not sure

I am planing to do another test if AF doesn't arrive, yes. Then I'll just have to see I suppose. I'm hoping it will arrive soon!

You could be.......I was! Honestly it took me a few days to get my head round not that I was unhappy but with ds who will be 3 when this one comes along and dd who will be 14mo I'm gonna have my hands full!

Goodluck whatever happens and let us know

effalump · 18/01/2009 20:13

hi
I am in a similar position - baby five months old - periods returned on a perfect 28 day cycle and now I am a week and a half late, plus had cramping when AF was due but no show, and nausea every day around lunchtime for the pat three days. Did a test yesterday which was negative - as I expected as it would be improbable but not impossible for me to be pregnant. Not bfing either.

cheerfulvicky · 18/01/2009 20:18

Its frustrating, isn't it? Let us know how you get on effalump. I figured if I finally started a thread about it on MN, then sods law AF will arrive soon

i got pg with my dd2 5mths after the birth of my first dd so its possible!

my cousins wife has just fond out she is 6mth pg and her son is 7mth old!!

she has hormone problems and is not supposed to be able to get pg! she had no signs or anything, she went to hosp about abcess things on her leg and the blood sample they took from her showed she was pg. She was sent for scan the same day and they confirmed a 6mth baby! she is in complete shock.

lollipopmother · 19/01/2009 12:41

Jesus, that would be a massive shock going from not pregnant to 6 months pregnant with a 7m/o baby, wow!

mama2leah · 19/01/2009 14:34

em yeh.. this happened to me, im pregnant...no idea how far....ds is 6 months.

cheerfulvicky · 19/01/2009 14:44

Hmmm, seems like the post-baby bit is indeed very fertile for people!

In the last week or so my boobs have gone massive, and very tender. 'this could be a sign that AF is due, or that I'm pregnant

I was thinking though, if I ovulated when I think I did, and we were unlucky enough to have a mishap with protection and not notice (DP says all seemed fine) then counting as they do from the date of LMP, I would be 8 weeks. That's awfully late to be getting a neg test, surely? Has anyone ever got a + test 8 weeks on, after loads of negs?

Tricky one eh?! Pregnancy tests are pretty acurate tho! I've just had a positive and my last visit from AF was 19 Dec but I think that was a fake AF visit - before that AF was 19 nov like you - I'm pregant and have had 2positives since thurs so I would think you would too if you were?......
Good luck - let us know!

cheerfulvicky · 20/01/2009 10:58

Thanks fairy! Well I dreamed last night a took a test, it said pregnant, then not pregnant, then pregnant again Not sure what that means, if anything! haha..

FairySparkles · 20/01/2009 22:05

Ahhhh Freud would have a field day!! When you gonna do another one?

cheerfulvicky · 20/01/2009 23:33

Errrm, not sure. I have one clearblue left and I'm 'saving' it. Although this morning after my daft dream I wanted to use it , but think I will wait til the end of the month. I don't feel pregnant, somehow. But I have the worst PMT ever, and no AF yet. And so we wait... Ho hum.

OP posts:
Jacksmama · 21/01/2009 00:00

just pee on the stick - we're all waiting!
for the record, my worst PMT ever was... when I was pregnant!

cheerfulvicky · 21/01/2009 15:16

Okay, okay: I gave in and used the other test, and it was negative. So it seems I am not pregnant, (this is my gut feeling) as I'm sure it would be showing up by now.

I have NO IDEA what my body is doing though, and it's really confusing. I bought a new bucket post childbirth size mooncup to try and tempt AF into arriving a few weeks back, but that obviously hasn't worked yet

Thanks for all your help, and if I suddenly find I'm expecting triplets after all, I'll be sure to keep you posted

Jacksmama · 21/01/2009 17:12

ROFL at triplets... errrmmm... maybe not... [yikes emoticon]

Do update if...

rainbowdays · 21/01/2009 18:48

I think that there must be some cosmic forces going on or something, I have been posting on this thread about exactly the same thing, except that I am getting convinced that I am pg!!!! My ds is now 9 months old, got af's back at 4 months and been nice and regular up til this month..... now about 10 days overdue and counting..... also heard about getting neg tests when pg on this thread too, so not so reassuring either.....

well time will tell !!!!! look forward to hearing about your triplets!
