Pregnancy Sickness and HG Support Thread

Many years ago there was a lovely lady that had an ongoing pregnancy sickness and HG support thread which was amazing. It really helped me through some of my darkest months.

I wanted to start this thread incase there is anyone who needs support or help with any level of pregnancy sickness to horrible HG level.

An amazing UK charity is: https://pregnancysicknesssupport.org.uk

Medication
If you go to the GP you should be offered a first line medication (there are then second and third line moving up the ladder if other medications aren’t helping). Medications can be combined and if you aren’t feeling better in 4/5 days go back to the GP and ask for something different.

Urine / Ketones
Most hospitals use to only admit when your ketones are 4+ (severe dehydration) but luckily most have now changed to how you feel as a patient.

General Tips

  • pick foods that are easy on the stomach
  • don’t worry about nutrition - any fluids / food are winner (words from my consultant)
  • ice lollys are your friend
  • rest as much as possible, tiredness makes sickness worse

Disclaimer
There are lots of women who terminate a wanted baby due to HG, there is no shame or judgement here, if an additional support thread is needed for this I am happy to set this up.

Anyone struggling mentally or physically please join for support and knowing you aren’t alone 🥰

Thanks @Hotchocolate4 for the reply. I’m definitely getting more use to the Xonvea now and it does help but still having some really bad days. Iv lost 6lb in just under 3 weeks and i dont have a high bmi anyway.
Have my 12weeks scan in a week and hoping that gives me a boost.

Keep an eye on your urine and don’t be scared to ask for fluids / antiemetics at hospital if needed. I got some urine sticks from Amazon and as soon as my ketones creep up I ring for an injection / fluids

Thank you for the thread.

I've just been put on cyclizine. It has helped with the actual vomiting, but I am still really struggling to eat because the nausea is pretty dreadful. I feel starving and sick at the same time, constantly. Really worried about not getting enough nutrition to the baby, so lovely to hear that people have had healthy babies.

I hated Cyclizine as it made me feel a bit whacked out. Give it a few days and if you still feel sick go back and ask for Xonvea or promethazine. There is no harm in trying other first line meds to see if it helps better. How many weeks are you?

my consultant said do not worry about nutrition eat what you fancy and can keep down. Pretty sure my kids are grown off Burger King, nachos and full fat coke 🤣

Hi all, I’m so happy to have found this thread. I’m currently 9 weeks pregnant with my first and really struggling with HG. I’m on cyclizine and prochlorperazine, and last week after another hospital visit I finally managed to get Xonvea as well.

Even with the full dose of everything I’m still being sick 10–15 times a day, and I don’t think I’m even keeping the medication down properly. I can manage a bit of food here and there, but not much at all.

I’m really struggling mentally with it now and honestly don’t know how long I can keep doing this. I’ve been off work and for the last 4 weeks I’ve basically done nothing except be at home or in hospital.
Feeling pretty desperate at this point.

@Ggohome until people have experienced HG it’s hard to put into words but I can completely see why 10% of people with HG will terminate a wanted pregnancy. It’s awful and not taken seriously!

Next medication to push for is ondanstron, which can be taken in combination with other first line medications.

Give these guys a call and make sure you know the guidelines (they know them inside out): https://pregnancysicknesssupport.org.uk

Then go back to your GP and say some key words: this is affecting you mentally, if they can’t get the sickness under control you don’t know if you can’t progress the pregnancy, you want a refer to a consultant.

It’s shouldn’t be hard work when you feel like death so if you have a family or friend who can speak to PSS charity with you and help advocate even better when you go back to GP / consultant.

I know this feels so dark right now and there isn’t an end in sight. I promise you it does get better, I can’t promise when but it will. We are here what ever route or path you go down.
