What was the first thing you ate after delivery? What was something you wished you packed (food) for after?

With my first I had cream crackers (no butter and also dont even like them) and cheese i didn't even like.(this was the only thing the midwives could find)
Wish I had absolutely anything else.

Second I had some homemade gingerbread, wish I had something more substantial so hoping for some inspiration from you ladies that I can make and will last for a spontaneous birth!

First time I made a big plate of chopped up fresh peppers, apples and cherry tomatoes and ate the whole massive lot. It’s always what I wanted any time I was hungry when pregnant. Couldn’t fancy anything else. Second time DH cooked a chicken and mushroom pie with vegetables and gravy. Third time it was a bowl of cereal with the kids as I didn’t really have the inclination to make much else so we had that before I got them off to school

Tea and toast and the tea wa the. I eat tea I have ever had.

they home for home made soup and crusty bread and loads of butter.

Then into bed for. My week of baby convalescence. Basically in bed mostly, lots of Co sleeping and watching box sets and the occasional walk and visit from family. Always in PJs and absolutely no problem Tessie to do a thing.

malimoon · 24/10/2025 22:25

My partner brought me a jacket potato with cheese and tuna from the hospital cafe. I hadn't eaten properly for about three days as horrible long slow labour and I inhaled that potato in about 30 seconds. Ate it with my hands. Absolutely delicious 😂😂😂😂

ninjahamster · 24/10/2025 22:25

I don’t recall ever being offered toast but if I was, I probably turned it down. I had sections and they gave me morphine or codeine at the end of each one even though they make me vomit!
I do remember after section no 1, I had a curry for my first meal. Was lush!

cadburyegg · 24/10/2025 22:27

Nothing whatsoever was provided I could eat, I have coeliac disease so I can’t eat normal bread. I brought my own snacks, cereal bars etc

applegingermint · 24/10/2025 22:31

Sent DH out for a proper coffee and a big slab
of cake as I’d had gestational diabetes so hadn’t had cake for some time.

I wasn’t offered tea and toast!

NoUserNameNeeded · 24/10/2025 22:32

It’s pasta in hospital and when I got home after having my DD I had a slice of pizza and bit of garlic bread my son saved me

Maraudingmarauders · 24/10/2025 22:34

I had the tea and toast and then promptly threw it all back up (post c section)
for some reason the hospital weetabix for breakfast was the most delicious thing ever. We were in for 8 days (4 pre and 4 post) and I looked forward to it every day.

I have zero memory of what I ate when I came home. The hospital dinners were terrible.

Mustreadabook · 24/10/2025 22:37

I think it was some random sandwich as I hadn't ordered lunch because I wasn't there the day before, so I got what was left over. I remember because I was expecting to be offered the famous tea and toast and I was not. Perhaps not allowed because no labour just c-section

GetToHeaven · 24/10/2025 22:37

I had the traditional tea and toast with both. It was much better second time around (still hot). Then with my second I had lunch in recovery which was sweet and sour chicken and jam sponge and custard.

Yassnass134 · 24/10/2025 22:40

My mum cooked for me towards the end of me giving birth. She made me a beautiful chicken pilau and an egg and potato curry. She made the pilau with lots of bone broth to warm me up.

GingerPaste · 24/10/2025 22:43

Tea, toast with jam and cornflakes was my happy post-natal breakfast / snack. It was wonderful.

Tea and toast - lovely. SIL sneaked a bottle of champagne onto the ward that evening, I only had a little bit as breastfeeding but that tasted amazing too.

I love this

Growlybear83 · 24/10/2025 22:54

A bacon sandwich. I thought I had eaten all the sandwiches that my husband brought with him during labour, but when I was taken back to the ward, he produced a pack of bacon sandwiches that he had hidden away until I’d given birth.

Redruby2020 · 24/10/2025 23:02

Cornflakes ☺️

IAmKerplunk · 24/10/2025 23:02

I had a penguin with dc1. Best thing I ever tasted! Dc3 was a homebirth so first thing I ate was a Chinese takeaway with a glass of champagne 🤣

EuroTour · 24/10/2025 23:05

Bacon egg fried bread and tomatoes with eldest, early morning birth and the hospital still did cooked breakfast then. It was lush.

unsureforevermore · 24/10/2025 23:06

I birthed a 10lb 11 baby boy and got taken back to the ward and sat and ate a full bag of mini eggs in shock hahaha

Rainbows41 · 24/10/2025 23:07

I don't remember eating anything but that cup of tea was HEAVEN!

FusionChefGeoff · 24/10/2025 23:52

DH bought the most incredible cheese baguette in after DS. I packed lots of Boost bars with DD plus the legendary tea and toast

LaTable · 25/10/2025 10:29

Well I'm starting to think the nhs' bill for white sandwhich bread is bigger than anybody anticipates 😂😂
Might have to look for some oatmeal muffins /cookies I can grab out the freezer and hope will defrost in a short time for my post delivery munchies!
And nuts and fruit I think will be on my list after being reminded by some of your posts

Ummm how come everyone else got tea and toast? I didn't know this was a thing! I have birth at 1am and no food was offered until breakfast time the following morning... By this point I'd already eaten two freddos I'd stashed in my hospital bag 🤣

mamagogo1 · 25/10/2025 21:54

I send now exh to subway for a meatball sub, i could see it from my window and fancied it. They offered me proper food (American hospital) but I wanted junk

maddiemookins16mum · 25/10/2025 21:57

I had a mug of tea and some hobnobs.

Blueuggboots · 25/10/2025 21:59

I had an M&S chicken club sandwich. The midwife tried to take it off me because it had been sat on the side all night….she didn’t get far!!
