Sonographer dropping a hint at scan today?!

Jellybean200 · 12/09/2025 18:54

Hi ladies, we had our 20 week scan today and made it clear to the sonographer we do NOT want to find out the gender - so want a surprise. At the end, she handed our sweet scan pic and said "and I've made sure you can't tell what it is on these pics". To me, that feels an untactful hint that it's a boy, not that we'd mind of course, but we so wanted a surprise and no hints! I suppose I think this as you wouldn't be able to tell it's a girl from the scan picture. Saying that, perhaps it wouldn't be possible to see boy bits on there anyway - am I overthinking this??! Was she just being kind and reassuring or has she dropped a MASSIVE hint?

Don’t read into it. I found it very easy to see that DD was a girl on the scan due to the 3 lines. Honestly I had no idea what I was looking at with DS and I had maybe 4-5 scans between 12 and 28 weeks where it was probably visible. I knew he was a boy from 11 weeks due to the NIPT though!

MyLittleNest · 12/09/2025 21:15

But see, not seeing the boy part would be just as telling, right?

So I think she just clarified that she hid that view altogether that way you weren't looking at it thinking, I don't see a boy part, must be a girl!

Chobby · 12/09/2025 21:16

Bloody hell, they can’t win. Why would they go out of their way to ’drop hints’? They see thousands of patients every year, with all respect they don’t care what sex your baby is.
It’s either a girl or a boy.

SmallandSpanish · 12/09/2025 21:20

Overthinking

However many times I read this, I can't make it make sense 😆

BluesandClues · 12/09/2025 21:31

Massively overthinking this one, they just stayed away from the important bits.

SparklingRivers · 12/09/2025 21:32

Girls have 3 very clear lines, I could tell mine was a girl before they even said.

RapunzelHadExtensions · 12/09/2025 22:36

That's nothing, my DSis said as soon as they went in they don't want to know, was a 32 weeks growth scan so they'd got all this way, and the sonographer said 'Oh look at it flashing about, well you know what boys are like'. It was a boy.

NormaNormalPants · 12/09/2025 22:44

Definitely overthinking. It was obvious what we were having at both DD and DS scans.

Jellybean200 · 12/09/2025 22:49

Thank you - I probably am but needed to hear that. Can’t help but wonder why she said that! 🤔

Both girls and boys are very obvious if you know what you are looking for and the picture is the at the correct angle. You’re overthinking it.

You’re still overthinking. It was just something to say, she’s tried to do her best to keep it a surprise for you, stop looking for deeper meanings.

ColinVsCuthbert · 12/09/2025 23:01

Ours repeatedy called the baby a "he" during our scan where we didn't want to know. It was a girl. I read a lot into that, and it didn't mean anything.

Jellybean200 · 12/09/2025 23:33

Reassuring...thank you!!

😆 Sorry! Not very clear now I read it back...

I know, I know! But an overthinking parent here who needed an army of Mumsnetters to make me realise how silly I'm being...long awaited for little one, just so wanting a surprise.

Yes - so true!

Not sure what you mean. Surely when she says ‘it’ she is referring to the baby. Or referring to the genetalia whatever ‘it’ is. Of course you can see whether it’s a boy or a girl, it’s not just that girls are missing a penis. Congrats on the baby.

BluesandClues · 12/09/2025 23:45

They said it to reassure you that they had made sure not to capture the ‘bits and bobs,’ so that you can look/post/share the scan picture without Aunt Mildred telling you that it’s a boy or girl due to xyz.

Jellybean200 · 12/09/2025 23:45

Yes...seriously! And I'm so glad I did ask, as people's thoughts on this have been most helpful. Back to surprise mode. 😊

You're definitely overthinking

Iloveagoodnap · 12/09/2025 23:49

Sonographer definitely wasn’t giving a hint by saying that.

I had gestational diabetes and had to have extra scans. I didn’t want to know what I was having. At the last scan, as I was getting ready to leave, the sonographer said ‘won’t be long until she’s here. Or he’s here.’ I knew that meant it was a girl but when I told my husband he thought he’d heard them saying ‘he’ at another scan, so it still could be either. I had a girl - I knew the sonographer had let it slip and then tried to cover her tracks!

Jellybean200 · 12/09/2025 23:49

Thanks for sharing, as this also happened, so I was convinced the surprise was over. Really helpful to know! 😊

Still overthinking.

IWillBeWaxingAnOwl · 13/09/2025 00:13

Overthinking. At 20 week scan the sonographer said "best move away so you don't see what it is!" And DH thought omg must be a boy. At 25 wks, sonographer said "she is a great size, or he, we call them all she" and DH thought must be a girl. Basically, you can't tell based on what sonographer said!
