Sonographer dropping a hint at scan today?!

Jellybean200 · 12/09/2025 18:54

Hi ladies, we had our 20 week scan today and made it clear to the sonographer we do NOT want to find out the gender - so want a surprise. At the end, she handed our sweet scan pic and said "and I've made sure you can't tell what it is on these pics". To me, that feels an untactful hint that it's a boy, not that we'd mind of course, but we so wanted a surprise and no hints! I suppose I think this as you wouldn't be able to tell it's a girl from the scan picture. Saying that, perhaps it wouldn't be possible to see boy bits on there anyway - am I overthinking this??! Was she just being kind and reassuring or has she dropped a MASSIVE hint?

God it’s impossible to be a hcp at this point in time isn’t it? You said you don’t want to know, she said ‘don’t worry you can’t tell in these photos’ and you want to complain?

Jellybean200 · 13/09/2025 06:34

No wanting to complain, just getting some reassurance from my fellow Mumnetters and I'm REALLY glad I did - back into surprise mode.😝

Id be more worried about the health of my baby than the shape of its genitalia, but that’s me.

Thank you - I probably am but needed to hear that. Can’t help but wonder why she said that! 🤔

She was reassuring you that by looking at the picture you won't see anything as she purposely used angles to avoid it .

mrssunshinexxx · 13/09/2025 06:43

You could definitely tell a girl off a scan pic, don’t worry op

Doraymefarsolateado · 13/09/2025 06:53

Pregnancy hormones! It’s a neutral statement not a hint at a boy. (Boys are wonderful by the way - I have both sexes and adore them all as will you)

She said that because she was being kind and not identifying if it is a boy or a girl.

The thing is, your baby (and what it has between its legs) is the most important thing in the world… to you. To the sonographer, it’s just another scan in a very long list of scans she has done, in which the least important thing she’s looking out for is what it has between its legs. You asked her not to tell you, she reassured you that you won’t be able to tell from the photos. She didn’t even have to do that, she was being kind.

Thank you and completely agree, I’m just speculating and didn’t want a surprise ruined - but it will be pregnancy hormones! 🥲

I agree with others … she’s essentially saying don’t even try to avert your eyes or ‘see’ something because I’ve made sure you can’t - which is very good of her! Just 20
weeks til you find out 😋

I know, I know! But an overthinking parent here who needed an army of Mumsnetters to make me realise how silly I'm being...long awaited for little one, just so wanting a surprise.

But it will be the same ‘surprise’ whenever you find out, whether at a scan or at the birth, surely?

Baby26 · 13/09/2025 13:09

I suppose i know what you mean - a penis is going to stick out and be more obvious. But when there's an absence of that, it doesn't mean there isn't one - it can be hidden. And as others have said, girls have genitals too. The 3 lines is one way to tell it's a girl, but I'm also not sure how many people know that. There would be more doubt if there was not much to see, so it could indicate it's a boy. But she could just have meant, she hasn't included potty shot photos. We were told at the 20 week scan we were having a boy, but weirdly she didn't include potty shots. I always see them on here.

That's what I always say to those who criticise people finding out during pregnancy. It made no difference to me, I was surprised and very happy, to find out at 20 weeks, just as happy and surprised as I'd have been at birth. But I have a lot of respect those that have the patience to wait😆I was too excited to know before birth.

Superscientist · 13/09/2025 13:18

I have one of each and it was obvious from the scans which is which.
I imagine she said the comment to stop people complaining and obsessing about what's in the scan photo
"I told the sonographer we didn't want to know but I think I can see it's a boy from the scan photo" sort of situation

I always wonder why people think the birth of their child will be any less exciting/special just because they already know what sex it is. I didn’t find out with my first, but did with my second and third, and none of the births were more special than the other.

The nature of their genitals has been the least interesting bit of meeting mine after delivery!
I have a friend who found out her baby was a boy as he was being whisk away to the NICU having been born not breathing. Not the moment she had in mind. She found out what she was having with her second

User364431 · 13/09/2025 13:22

Yes you can immediately see if it's a girl as well. I only read on MN that it looks a bit like "three lines" and when the sonographer was scanning, I could instantly see it.

Sugargliderwombat · 13/09/2025 13:27

Yeah you're over thinking. She's probably said that as in - don't be scared to look you won't be able to tell.

Sunnyscribe · 13/09/2025 17:03

Yes overthinking, they probably chose pictures for you where the genital area isn't clearly visible. So you or anyone else can't try to identify it either way.

Sidebeforeself · 13/09/2025 17:18

Suggest you try to get this overthinking under control otherwise you’ll drive yourself crazy once he or she arrives!!! They’ll give you so much more to overthink!

Potty shots??

It's when they take a scan image from below baby that shows the legs and what's in between. I don't like the term but that's what people call it!

I didnt want to find out with any of my 3 pregnancies. With our 2nd, we had to have lots of extra scans and I was constantly repeating myself that we didnt want to know. When I was further on we had a very detailed scan and briefly saw our baby in 4d (amazing 💗) the sonographer understood we didn't want to find out the sex. When we saw our baby on the 4d scan, I excitedly said "our baby is gorgeous already" and the sonographer-in her thick accent said "your baby is very handsome" neither of us said anything until we got to the elevator after in which i was extremely pissed off and upset as it was obvious we were having a boy. I was in total shock when I was told I had given birth to a girl. So I do understand where youre coming from, but they're so used to these requests that im pretty sure its second nature that they say this all the time, so I really wouldn't spend the rest of the magical journey of your pregnancy being overshadowed by something that was a throw away comment (in other words, dont do what I did and spend the rest of ur pregnancy being pissed off about it) x
