As the title says, I had a growth scan today and my little girl is weighing 8lb 11! 2 weeks ago she was weighing 7lb 2. Her femur length as decreased so they think the previous scan measurements were wrong. My question is, if they were wrong, could they be wrong about her weight? I do have GD and also high polyhydramnios. I just don’t get how she’s put on so much in 2 weeks - has anyone else had this? I’ve got a c section booked in for a week tomorrow

Yeah they can totally be wrong, very often are tbh. Don't worry about it, especially if you're having a c section anyway!

Am805463 · 03/07/2024 19:09

Yes I think as a one off measurement, growth scans are often incorrect. Two of my children were 8lb 4oz at 37+2 and 8lb 7oz at 38+1 so they’d have been big babies if I’d gone to term. I had sections also, good luck next week!

KittensSchmittens · 03/07/2024 19:11

They are so bad at estimating weight - told my SIL that she was having an average weight baby but was actually born at 40 weeks weighing 5lb. Obvious IUGR which they missed, so wouldn't put too much emphasis on one growth scan.

Azandme · 03/07/2024 19:12

I had GD. At 38 weeks I was told my dd was going to be 10lbs+.

At 39 weeks I was induced.

I gave birth to a gorgeous, scrawny 6lb 7.5oz baby.

They couldn't have been more wrong.

JuneShowers24 · 03/07/2024 19:13

I was told my eldest would be a “very big baby” he should have been 10lb. He was 8lb 3oz

Cantchooseaname · 03/07/2024 19:13

I was induced- told 8lb 5 at 36 weeks, born at 38 7lb 3. The status ent sonographer asked the sonographer what to write if the head circumference is “off the chart”. I went into labour absolutley terrified on all counts. Last 2 weeks were horrendous.
they never explained just how inaccurate these measurements can be.

What is IUGR?

jennyt82 · 03/07/2024 19:15

I was told to expect a 9-10lb baby at my growth scan, he was born at 39+2 weighing 6lb 4oz

Goneback2school · 03/07/2024 19:15

On my eldest I was told he was 9lb 11 at a 38 week scan- so big they brought forward my planned c section. He was born a day later weighing 8lb 11.

Wontletmeusemynormalname · 03/07/2024 19:16

DD2 was apparently 9.5lb at 36 weeks.... she was born a week late, so 4 weeks later, and weighed 7lb 1oz. I was hyperventilating and trying to reverse my pushing because I was terrified I'd be ripped in two.

TakeOnFlea · 03/07/2024 19:16

Both mine were completely wrong. Told I was having big babies, 10lbers. Utter tripe, 6 12 was the biggest.

Chanel05 · 03/07/2024 19:17

I had growth scans with my second and they said he would be small. I went into spontaneous labour at 38 weeks and whilst I was 9cm, the consultant that had his hands up the business ends of things was telling me I only had a 5lb baby to birth. He was born at 8lb an hour later!

They are often very, very inaccurate.

Misspotterscat · 03/07/2024 19:18

My baby was apparently weighing a whole lb more than her actual birth weight a week before she was born.

Dumdeedahdumdeedo · 03/07/2024 19:19

I was induced due to IUGR at 37 weeks, they told me my baby was going around 5.6lb

He was born at 4lb 9oz

Nicklebox · 03/07/2024 19:26

had my baby 8lb 5oz at 39 weeks naturally no problem at all.

DreadPirateRobots · 03/07/2024 19:28

Remember that your baby hasn't actually been weighed. This is an estimate based on measurements, which have a margin of error. Often quite a high one. Nobody will know what your baby actually weighs until it's out.

afrikat · 03/07/2024 19:31

I've read so many stories about these weight estimates being ridiculously wrong I don't even know why they bother doing it. My daughter was measuring 'average' and came out at 10lb 7oz. I had some tearing but no other issues during birth

CloseYourMouthLynn · 03/07/2024 19:38

My second was predicted to be 8.5 and he was 7 pounds, try not to overthink it although easier said than done I know as I did!

All 3 of ours were predicted to be over 8 1/2 lbs. None were. The heaviest was 7lb 4 oz .

scrivette · 03/07/2024 19:43

I was told the baby was very large and would be well above 9lb, I went into labour the next day and gave birth to an 8lb baby.

geekygardener · 03/07/2024 19:48

Even if your baby is big it's will be ok. They can be very wrong yes but even if they are right it will be ok.

First baby was born at 42 weeks so two weeks over and was 7lbs.
Second baby born at 36 weeks was 8lbs 10oz.
Second baby was easier to give birth to. Plus I see your having a c section so try not to worry.
Plus first baby was scrawny and long. Second was squishy and cute as a button. Both are beautiful average size children.

geekygardener · 03/07/2024 19:55

Just wanted to add this as I realise it wasn't the size in terms of carrying your baby or the c section that you mentioned were worrying you. I had various growth scans with my big baby and they predicted she would be big. They said femur was short and tummy big. They were worried about something being wrong and prepared me for the possibility. I didn't have GD and they were scratching their heads a bit. Anyway she was born perfectly healthy. Just a fatty. She was the strongest baby I have ever met. Basically born a toddler but cute with it. They probably got my dates wrong as I was adamant that I was further as we timed conception but it happens.
Congratulations on your baby and good luck next week.

GiggleMugsMandy · 03/07/2024 19:58

I was told to expect a big 10 lb baby.
He was 8lb1.

papadontpreach2me · 03/07/2024 20:18

They told me dd was 8lb 8 at 37 weeks, I had her at 38 weeks and she was 11lb 4.

They get it really wrong op, don't worry.

SleepingStandingUp · 03/07/2024 20:21

Anecdotally, everyone I know with polyhydraminos have been told their babies are bigger than they are.
