Early pregnancy anxiety

Hi all,

im currently 4 weeks and 4 days pregnant, I’m so excited but also so anxious. I have miscarried before but this was a fair few years ago now.

I’ve had a few symptoms just breast tenderness that seems to come and go? a metallic taste in my mouth and some cramping.

I feel like I’m constantly symptom checking and I’m worried if I don’t have enough symptoms, I’ve heard so many people say they didn’t have many symptoms and ended up miscarrying.

did you have many symptoms at 4 weeks?

thanks ☺️

I don't think I got many symptoms until about six weeks. My breasts were sore and that was the earliest thing. Then some lower back pain. Around eight weeks I started to feel nauseous. But I really remember that extreme anxiety of the first few weeks, I was looking every day at the odds of miscarrying etc. You just have to take it one day at a time and remember that no news is good news. I did relax a bit around 7-8 weeks and now 23 weeks and all going well, fingers crossed!

QuantumPanic · 01/06/2024 09:04

Hi OP,

There is no association between degree of symptoms and likelihood of miscarriage, afaik.

Most early miscarriages (before 12 weeks) will happen because the embryo is not viable - personally, I find this a helpful piece of information. There's nothing you can do to make sure your embryo is genetically healthy - that was all determined at the moment of conception.

I also personally find it helpful to think about the stats (but YMMV). The odds are pretty good once you make it past six weeks.

All we can do is wait and see what happens. I've got my fingers crossed for you. 🤞

Hi OP,

I am 6 weeks today and the only symptoms I had when I was 4 weeks were sore breasts and really bad cramps which lasted about 4 days. But that eased off and now at 6 weeks, I still have the sore boobs and get heartburn on and off. Not having many symptoms isn't always a bad thing, I so far have missed out morning sickness and for that I am grateful haha, like PP just take it a day at a time and try to enjoy the process, good luck xx

AprilShowers2021 · 01/06/2024 11:06

@RK1992 I'm 4 weeks and 4 days and have zero symptoms. I'm going out of my mind. With my first I had symptoms from exactly 4 weeks, but this time nothing. Its taken me 20 months to get pregnant again, so desperate for this one to stick.

@malimoon ah that is really reassuring to know. Thank you for taking time to reply. The anxiety really is real, I’ve been trying to keep busy and like you say take one step at a time, it’s out of my hands and just hope everything I can control like eating and drinking will help ☺️ Good luck with the rest of your pregnancy & when your bundle of joy arrives ☺️X

I'm 7 weeks and the anxiety is killing me a little bit so I can understand. I have googled a lot and symptoms do come and go, I find they're worse at night and better in the morning. I am trying to do things as normal and not over check! Easier said than done.

@QuantumPanic thank you so much, I never knew that. I always associated symptoms with a healthy pregnancy but everything I have read is that everyone’s pregnancy is so different.

only a couple of weeks to week 6 😊

thank you!

@AG1993 yeah the cramps have seemed to have eased off and my breasts are tender but seem to come and go.

it’s really helpful to know. Iv e kept busy today and going to just take it day by day ☺️Thank you for your reply x

@AprilShowers2021 bless you, from what I have read pregnancy symptoms can be so different with each pregnancy, and from reading the above it doesn’t seem that symptoms and healthy pregnancy are associated. Wishing you the best for a safe and healthy pregnancy x

@Sopshef congratulations! It’s horrible isn’t it.. feel like I wake up and straight away think how do I feel 😂 yes same.. need to take it day by day and not Google every little symptom 😂 wishing you a healthy pregnancy ☺️X

Definitely normal for symptoms to come and go, I was an anxious wreck for the first 12 weeks (and still am at 25 weeks, to be honest!), but symptoms are definitely no indicator as to how the pregnancy is progressing. Just take things a day at a time and you'll soon be looking back realising you've reached 12 weeks x

moosey89 · 02/06/2024 17:25

Symptoms are definitely not a sign of if a pregnancy will progress/succeed or not. I was on the unfortunate side of this recently, I had horrific nausea and sickness (throwing up every day), and really sore breasts, despite the fact the baby had died and I had a missed miscarriage. The symptoms only went away after I had surgical management.

You just have to take one day at a time, remember the statistics are in your favour, and that with early pregnancy you can't really do anything to influence the outcome if you're relatively healthy. Best of luck with it all x

AprilShowers2021 · 03/06/2024 16:58

@RK1992 I feel exactly the same as your comment about not knowing symptoms could come and go. I'm 4wks + 5 and all of my syptoms have gone now and i just dont feel pregnant. I have a scan at 7 + 2, but I'm not sure I can bare the wait.

Emmaev · 03/06/2024 17:25

The only symptom I had at 4 weeks was some cramping. I didn’t get any symptoms until about 6 weeks, when my boobs were really sore and my belly felt like it was stretching. I then had symptoms drop off at 9 weeks and was in such a panic. But I’m now 27 weeks with a healthy girl. So as others have said symptoms are no indication of how a pregnancy is going. Best of luck, I know the anxiety of the first few weeks all too well

It's so reassuring to hear other positive stories. I completely paranoid as it's taken nearly 20 months to get pregnant 2nd time round and it's so different. I wasn't even having periods when I fell, it's a but of a shock and random. I'd almost given up and had booked in to speak to a clinic about IVF. I've just cancelled the appointments, hope I'm not tempting fate. Thank you for taking the time to reply and I hope you have an enjoyable rest of your pregnancy 😊

@minnieot thank you for your reply! And congratulations ☺️ That’s all you can do, it just feels like time is moving so slowly 😂 some days I worry more than others. But pleased to know I’m not the only one! Good luck for the rest of your pregnancy x

@moosey89 I’m so sorry to hear about your loss.💔 Thank you for taking time to reply, absolutely.. that’s all that can be done and just try not to stress and worry as it won’t actually change fate.

wishing you all the best x

@Emmaev thank you! This is so helpful to know. I’ve had some cramping and my stomach does feel like I have a bit of stitch 😅 it’s so hard not to worry isn’t it. people have said you never stop worrying about your children, even when they are grown up.. so this is probably just the start 😂 wishing you the best for the rest of your pregnancy xx

@AprilShowers2021 its a vicious cycle isn’t it! I’ve never checked the toilet roll as much as I have these last couple of weeks 😅 from what everyone has said it seems that symptoms can come and go! A few days ago I felt completely normal but then today I’ve had sore boobs come back! Have you told anyone yet? I’ve told close family and one friend as I need reassurance, plus figured I would seek comfort in those people along the way, not sure if this would help you too! Wishing you a healthy pregnancy x

Hey @RK1992 I can totally relate to this. Best thing I ever did was a course in CBT for pregnancy anxiety when I was early pregnancy. It has helped loads. Stay away from the forums, find distractions and focus on the facts. Good luck and wish you a healthy and happy pregnancy

Hi I'm 4 weeks and 4days pregnant and I had 2 miscarriages the end of last year due to them not forming properly... I totally know how you are feeling right now as I'm going out my mind as had a brown blood this morning and cramping.. still waiting for doctors to get back to me for an appointment but it's all done by email now so I am even stressing about that too.. how are you feeling now??? Xx

@emma073002 hi Emma, I’m so sorry for your loss 😟 pregnancy after loss is no fun, from the small articles I have read there seems to be a fair bit around implantation bleeding so hoping that this is the case for you too 🤞 keep chasing them, I had to wait 2 days for a scan last time and it made me worry so much more with it being the unknown.
i feel ok! I’m tired and sore boobs. Trying to ignore every twinge I might feel, that in itself is tiring! I’ve got everything crossed for you and hope you get through tomorrow xx

@northernsunshine hey ☺️ Thanks for your reply. That’s really useful to know and will give it a look in to. I’m an anxious person as it is. So true! I’ve being trying not to Google and stay busy, some days are better then others. I have told a close friend and family as i think it helps to have a few people to help find comfort in.. and text them all about how I’m worrying and I need reassurance its ok 😂 Thank you xx
