I think I'm miscarrying

Very unexpected pregnancy but very much wanted once we got our heads around it. I'm only 7 weeks but I went for a early reassurance scan today to see if everything was where it should be as I've had very little symptom-wise.

The sonographer couldn't find anything but suggested it may be too early/maybe my dates were wrong.

I've now started bleeding though, lightly and pink and the combination is making me think its over.

I hadn't even gotten as far as registering. Don't know why I'm posting really, it's just been such a roller coaster for it to end like this

I’m very sorry you’re going through this.

If this pregnancy was a surprise, do you think you may have your dates wrong? It is possible and possible you ovulated later x

Thank you.

My last period was on 14th March and I'm usually really regular. I know I couldn't have conceived until week of 25th as my DP was away until then but I don't know if that messes with things because everything seems timed from LMP?

The bleeding doesn't seem to be getting heavier but still bleeding nonetheless.

Not with an LMP in March!!

WiseDog · 05/05/2024 00:05

Most implantation bleeding normally don't get heavy, you was too miscarriage it would be heavy and loads of clots and pain is really bad as I had one before, but now pregnant again 18 week gone , hope this helps and good luck x

WiseDog · 05/05/2024 00:07

Could of ovulated late I would just test again when bleeding as stopped x

WiseDog · 05/05/2024 00:10

It also could be old blood , are u in pain ? Any clots ?

TheShellBeach · 05/05/2024 00:40

Have you tried another pregnancy test to see how dark the line is now?

TheShellBeach · 05/05/2024 00:46

And another possibility is that this is an ectopic pregnancy.

TheShellBeach · 05/05/2024 00:47

Do go and see your doctor, OP and ask for tests.

TheShellBeach · 05/05/2024 00:49

Implantation would have been about a month ago.

Confusedcrown · 05/05/2024 00:59

Thanks everyone. No pain, no cramps, no clots.

The bleeding seems to have stopped. It didn't last long and was light and pink rather than red.

Could the scan have knocked something? It was abdominal not internal but she was pressing quite hard to find something.

Should I bother trying to see a midwife this early or wait for it to pass naturally?

I did do another CB test tonight and it still stays pregnant 3+ but I understand it can take weeks for that to update after a loss.

I'm sorry this is my first pregnancy and first loss so I don't know what I'm doing tbh. Thank you again for any advice.

@Confusedcrown are you in the UK? I'd phone the EPU to try and get another scan. Or did the place you had your early scan at offer a follow up or referral to EPU?

Hugosmaid · 05/05/2024 01:07

Hello OP

Did you see a gestational sack? Was it measured? Was you booked in for a follow up scan in two weeks? Most private clinics will have a protocol for these circumstances. They have to monitor the progression in accordance of BMUS regulations.

It’s not unusual for mum to have got her dates wrong or late ovulation/ implantation.

An early pregnancy scan is a screen shot in time. We don’t know what’s happened the day before or what’s going to happen the day after - that’s why the follow up scan is so important.

What you given a report? What measurements were taken? When was your last positive pregnancy test taken? Was any bleeding identified? Did she check your fallopian tubes and ovaries?

It maybe that your too early, it’s maybe that baby hadn’t stuck or it maybe that baby has settled else where - this is why it’s very important you have a follow up scan if your still having positive pregnancy tests.

You should be around 7 weeks at this point and baby should be visible ( if dates are correct or at least a yolk) If you have high temp, bleeding, severe abdominal pain then you straight to A&E x

I’ve just seen this update. Ask your GP for a HCG blood test. But also you should have been given a report of the scan.

Hugosmaid · 05/05/2024 01:15

And no the abdominal scan wouldn’t have knocked anything x

Confusedcrown · 05/05/2024 08:04

Thanks everyone - I am in the UK but have to be referred to EPU in my area by my GP and they're closed until Tuesday. Looking online, it also seems that EPU isn't open over the BH either?

Thank you for your detailed response @Hugosmaid. I do have a report but it is very short and says they found something very small in the endometrial cavity but cannot verify it is a pregnancy and if it is, its much smaller than should be for 7 weeks. Their suggestion was to rescan in a couple of weeks to "assess viability".

This was before the bleeding although I did have some brown ish discharge a few weeks ago that I thought was my period starting but maybe this was something?

Have you ever been told you have a retroverted uterus because it can make it incredibly hard to see with a transabdominal probe.

This period of time is horrible for you OP 💐

You could try and book in for a transvaginal scan. Things are a lot clearer simply because of where the probe is inserted. Many factors can make it hard to see with abdominal scanning. Tilted uterus, bowl gas, mother BMI, empty bladder. Then you will have a clearer idea of what’s actually there 💐

Thank you for the quick response. I've never really had much contact with gynecology - I've been pretty lucky and this is my first potential pregnancy. I did have one smear that they struggled a bit with but they got there.

She did mention gas at the scan (it's basically one of my only symptoms!). My BMi is slightly over at BMI 26 but my bladder was full. She even tried after emptying my bladder too in case thar helped.

Thank you for all your advice. I guess I'm just going to have to wait until Tues and try and speak to my GP. That's always a nightmare appt-wise ...

Just to check, if I didn't conceive until 25th/26th March, would that explain not being able to see anything yet? Or does the 7 weeks from last LMP take into account that people probably didn't conceive on day 1 of their period?

OP posts:
Hugosmaid · 05/05/2024 08:45

Hmmm if you struggled a bit with the smear test you could have a titled uterus. It can literally be like looking over the edge of a cliff on an abdominal scan. You can even struggle at a 12 week scan.

Yes, it’s taken from the first day of your last period as that’s when the whole cycle starts again even though you dont conceive on that day.

HCG blood test and try and get a transvaginal scan sorted. I’ll keep my fingers and toes crossed for you. 💐

Nottherealslimshady · 05/05/2024 08:54

If you can afford it try a place that does internal scans. They're not much more but obviously you've already paid for one private scan and it adds up. Window to the womb do internal I believe. My SIL has a tilted uterus and had to have an internal. They can see alot earlier with internal.

Or wait till Tuesday and try to get into epau ASAP. Some are really good, some aren't. If you're not having heavier than period bleeding and cramping then you won't be miscarrying, but it could be a sign of something not being right.

I'm sorry you're going thorugh this, wishing you the best

Nottherealslimshady · 05/05/2024 08:59

If your period was the 14th, you ovulated around the 28th and that's when you can conceive. But the pregnancy start date is taken from the first day of your period so it all adds up, you are 7 weeks pregnant.

But the egg can take more or less time than expected to reach the wall of your cervix and they all grow at different rates. People are frequently moved forward or backwards in gestation based on babies size when they know their exact ovulation date. My SIL was moved back 2 weeks.

Confusedcrown · 05/05/2024 10:15

Thanks everyone. I've pretty much accepted it isn't looking great at this stage but would love to have a definitive answer.

My DP is away with work so it's just me and I'm going a little crazy googling and overthinking. It's good to know that practically, there's nothing I can be doing right now so thank you for the benefit of all your knowledge and experience

when I miscarried I was in sooo much pain and the blood was a lot. Sorry if too graphic but I felt mine pass so I knew before any tests. The hospital that was my local had a walk in epu. They will do an internal scan and two lots of bloods spaced apart. Just so you know what to expect, with what you’re describing I think they will do internal and bloods.

it could be something else. I really want to tell you to hold on to that but if you do and it’s the end that hope will kill you.

either way I am sure your partner will support you through it. Mine didn’t, he left me crying in a heap on the floor and walked out as he couldn’t cope seeing me upset. 🙄

Probably nothing worry about hun and just old blood ,keep calm and see early scan clinic x
