I think I'm miscarrying

Very unexpected pregnancy but very much wanted once we got our heads around it. I'm only 7 weeks but I went for a early reassurance scan today to see if everything was where it should be as I've had very little symptom-wise.

The sonographer couldn't find anything but suggested it may be too early/maybe my dates were wrong.

I've now started bleeding though, lightly and pink and the combination is making me think its over.

I hadn't even gotten as far as registering. Don't know why I'm posting really, it's just been such a roller coaster for it to end like this

superstar84 · 05/05/2024 10:37

You could ring 111 and ask for a phone call with an out of hours gp

Confusedcrown · 05/05/2024 11:53

Thanks for the reassurance/experiences. I'm so sorry so many have been through this.

As I'm not in active pain or bleeding right now, it seems like waiting until Tue might be the best bet? I looked up ectopic symptoms which seems to be the danger with these symptoms but my shoulder is fine, no active bleeding or pain when going the toilet. I'll be keeping an eye out though.

Thank you for the quick response. I've never really had much contact with gynecology - I've been pretty lucky and this is my first potential pregnancy. I did have one smear that they struggled a bit with but they got there.

She did mention gas at the scan (it's basically one of my only symptoms!). My BMi is slightly over at BMI 26 but my bladder was full. She even tried after emptying my bladder too in case thar helped.

Thank you for all your advice. I guess I'm just going to have to wait until Tues and try and speak to my GP. That's always a nightmare appt-wise ...

Just to check, if I didn't conceive until 25th/26th March, would that explain not being able to see anything yet? Or does the 7 weeks from last LMP take into account that people probably didn't conceive on day 1 of their period?

No, a seven week pregnancy is definitely dated from your LMP.

The brown bleeding last month, when you thought it was your period starting, was probably implantation.

If you start having heavy bleeding or pain before Tuesday, please go to A and E.

I know this is a horrible time for you. I've had a lot of miscarriages myself and it's just awful.

Either way I am sure your partner will support you through it. Mine didn’t, he left me crying in a heap on the floor and walked out as he couldn’t cope seeing me upset.

OMG @EG94 some men make things difficult.

My ex was like that. It's one of the reasons he's an ex.

TheShellBeach · 05/05/2024 16:59

How are you today, @Confusedcrown?

Are you still bleeding? Did you retest?

TheShellBeach · 05/05/2024 17:04

There's a very good chance that things will turn out okay.

Very early scans often don't see the pregnancy. There are countless threads on here which start like yours, and eventually the OP gets good news.

I hope that's the case for you.

Sallycinnamum · 05/05/2024 17:29

OP, I had a similar experience at 6 weeks. Went for a scan and it was pretty inconclusive. Then I had lots of spotting for a week or so and a huge bleed so thought I'd miscarried.

Turns out the bleed was unconnected and my baby is now 15!

Fingers crossed all is OK OP.

How are you today, @Confusedcrown?

Are you still bleeding? Did you retest?

No bleeding since the hour or so yesterday and even then, it never got to heavy, just light and pink.

No pain either. But I still don't have many symptoms beyond sore breasts and fatigue.

Thank you for checking in, it means a lot!

Thanks for sharing @Sallycinnamum. It's really hard to know whether you're over/under reacting when you don't have any previous experience.

Glad your pregnancy worked out in the end

@Confusedcrown how did epu go today? Any news hope u OK hun x

ladycarlotta · 07/05/2024 10:41

Ah this not-knowing phase is just the worst. I'm so sorry.

I will say that at that gestation (I've been pregnant 9 times) I've never had a transabdominal scan that wasn't utterly useless. They always switch to transvaginal and see far more - were you offered this?

I'll be honest and say that with the information you now have, it's not looking great - but equally you don't have the full picture and there is still a fair chance that the pregnancy is progressing well and will be fine. Unfortunately the only way you are going to know for sure is by waiting. It's excruciating though and you have all my sympathy and solidarity. Hoping things go your way x

Thanks for checking in.

EPU said they won't see me without a referral from my GP and my GP nurse says I don't meet the criteria as I'm not bleeding right now, and no pain.

I'm waiting for a call back from the surgery but noone seems very concerned tbh? Not sure if that's a sign that it's inevitable either way and it's just a waiting game.

I saw some people talking about a private blood test to check the HCG levels that I'm considering but I don't have all the money in the world really.

I'm desperate to know one way or another.

Thank you @ladycarlotta

The sonographer did say a transvaginal scan would be better but it was a private clinic and they didn't offer internals. She did put it as a suggestion in the report but my GP surgery doesn't accept private reports apparently.

I feel like I'd feel better if I knew, even if it was bad news. Just not sure how to go about it as I'm not meeting criteria for further checks at the min but nothing on the scan at over 7 weeks, the light, short bleeding and no symptoms is making me doubt there even is a pregnancy at this stage!

Ah OP, they make it so hard for women to access early pregnancy care. This is reason why women embellish the truth even though they should have to x

Ive sent you a DM

It's really likely they wouldn't see much on a transvaginal scan either, and they can be quite traumatic, if it starts bleeding again...

Honestly it's hell and I'm so sorry you're going through it, but the sonographer is right that the best thing to do is to wait until some time has passed and they can compare a future scan with this one.

You could try and get another private scan, but they will decline you if you mention that you've just had one, they did it to me. Blood tests would need to be taken a few days apart to see if they were rising or falling, so that wouldn't be a quick answer either.

My fingers are really crossed for you xx

@Confusedcrown I don't know if it helps, but both pregnancies I've had, at 7 weeks nothing was visible at all on abdominal scans because I've got a retroverted (tilted back) uterus. Apparently this is pretty common, with a transvaginal scan everything was super clear.

Peonyyyy · 07/05/2024 14:44

I had an abdominal scan today and they could only see the sac, they did a transvaginal and could see the baby and heartbeat. Transvaginal is so much better at the early stages. With my son I even had it for my 12 week scan, I’ve never been told me uterus is tilted but I wonder if it is.

Peonyyyy · 07/05/2024 14:45

Is there a private place near you that does vaginal scans? I’ve had one at Window To The Womb in the past, they are a chain so may be one near you.

It does help thank you! I'm a bit embarrassed to say, but I didn't realise internals were a thing for pregnancy scans until this weekend so definitely feeling a little more knowledgeable if nothing else. I'm hoping they offer one if the abdominal ones are still so inconclusive- just to know one way or another would be really helpful.

Oh I'm really glad everything is okay @Peonyyyy I've been following your thread.

I'll take a look for that chain, thank you. I'm trying to balance my desperation to know, the benefits of giving whatever is going on more time to grow/show and financial concerns.

It doesn't help that my DP is away with work and pretty much uncontactable so this is my main form of support at the min - thank you so much for all your guidance and experience everyone!

I had a lot of miscarriages OP and I know how awful you're feeling at the moment.

Hopefully when you have your next scan, they'll be able to see the baby. I wouldn't lose hope yet.
