Ultrasound at 16w - can it be wrong

Hi
I had a private ultrasound scan at 16w and we were keeping as a surprise so the sonographer put it on the picture - a girl. The sonographer was having trouble with the angle and kept saying baby’s legs are closed. At my 12w scan with the nhs they showed us the nub and said most likely boy. We are very confused now. As we didn’t see the scan at 16 weeks - closed our eyes .. we don’t know what to think! My first pregnancy was a girl and it was very different. Having a hard time processing it all. Read a number of articles where 16w scans have been wrong

can someone look at the picture and share your view?

It's not the clearest picture, can you post your 12 week scan for the nub?

HowDoYouSolveAProblemLikeMyRear · 24/04/2024 20:14

I'm terrible at seeing the shapes in those scans. But I know that the sex is very difficult to work out by ultrasound at 12w. There's no proper evidence for nub theory.

Hoglet70 · 24/04/2024 20:16

They get it wrong all the time don't they? Also, I don't think how you carry, how sick you are etc is any indication of the sex of the baby. Apparently my scan with DS was clear as a bell that he was a boy but I couldn't see it and still can't when I look at it.

justanotherlaura · 24/04/2024 20:19

Looks like a girl to me. We're having a second boy and this pregnancy has been totally different to my last, I would have sworn I was having a girl this time if it wasn't for a very obvious private scan at 16 weeks!

Cas112 · 24/04/2024 20:20

Just confirm at 20week scan

Mumconfusion · 24/04/2024 20:20

Added both 12week and 16week scan

cant see the 3 lines or hamburger at 16w scan

If you really want tp know look at the heart rate. Girls are always higher bpm than boys

Well this is a lie,

My son would have been a girl if so

Mumconfusion · 24/04/2024 20:31

Was 149? I just don’t understand the image of the 16w scan..

This is a myth.

TheShellBeach · 24/04/2024 20:32

You'll find out in a few weeks.
It's one or the other.
Does it matter?

"Many myths surround the sex of an unborn baby. One is that, early in pregnancy, unborn boys have faster heartbeats than girls.
There is no evidence that this is true. Studies have shown that there is no difference between male and female fetal heart rates."

Can you predict a baby's sex from their heart rate?

Some people believe that the heartbeat of a fetus can indicate its sex, but no scientific evidence supports this theory. An ultrasound scan can give a good idea of the fetus' sex, but the only way to be sure is to wait until birth. We look at the scien...

My scan was wrong at 18 weeks. correct at 20 weeks. Be patient.

BirthdayRainbow · 24/04/2024 20:33

I'm confused. You were keeping whether pink or blue as a surprise so the sonographer wrote it was a girl and now you're asking here?

Damnyourheadshoulderskneesandtoes · 24/04/2024 20:34

You were told a sex at your 12 week NHS scan based on nub theory?!

Anyway it's a girl. The lack of penis and balls sort of confirms it.

Mumconfusion · 24/04/2024 20:35

Which way around was it pls? I see it’s easier to mistake a boy for a girl than the other way around

OP posts:
Mumconfusion · 24/04/2024 20:36

Added it on the photo put it in an envelope and gave it to us. We didn’t see the genitals on the screen as we were keeping it a surprise at a reveal

At this stage I think it's very difficult to tell. The baby is still very small and a penis on a 16 week baby will be miniscule. I'm surprised they told you anything at 12 weeks tbh, especially in the nhs. I had my dating scan with ds3 at 17 weeks and they said it was too early to tell.

underscorer · 24/04/2024 20:40

Just wait until 20 weeks.

emmies86 · 24/04/2024 20:40

Having had a girl and a boy that is most definitely a girl. Boys bits stick out further and can be seen clearly

This isn't strictly true. Girls genitalia can swell up whilst still developing, sometimes causing the external labia to mimic a penis. If you want more certainty, wait until 20 weeks, or better still- birth!

TheTwirlyPoos · 24/04/2024 20:44

I might have read this wrong but there seems to be a lot of intense scrutiny. Is there a reason it matters so much?

anywherehollie · 24/04/2024 20:53

That's a girl

Perfect28 · 24/04/2024 20:55

I find it hard to imagine that any sonographer worth their salt would try and guess the sex of a 12 week old foetus
