Failed medical abortion?

ppgeo19 · 07/04/2024 14:18

Hi, so I had a medical abortion 5 weeks ago now, all my tests had been very strong postive since even the test from the clinic. I didn't have any pain during the abortion but did heavy bleed for a few days then light peroid type bleeding for a few weeks. I did see clumps and lumps come out. When I first found out I was pregnant my clear blue said 3+ weeks (I was around 5 weeks pregnant) and now all my clear blues say 2-3 weeks still even tho it's been 5 weeks. My tests are not fading. I have rung up the clinic who has me in for a ultra sound on Friday, has anyone had experience of this? Is there a possibility I'm still pregnant or retained tissue?
I've attached pregancy tests from today, which is 5 weeks 2 days past medical abortion

I've not been through this @ppgeo19 but my understanding is that pregnancy hormones can still be present for quite a while afterwards, or some tissue can remain, but that you're not actually pregnant. Contact your healthcare provider if you are at all concerned though. Take care!

I also did a quick google and this link seems quite helpful.

Can I take misoprostol at night or in the morning?

As long as you take the tablets as directed during your appointment, it is up to you whether you take misoprostol at night or in the morning.

Hello, some pregnancy hormones can still be around up to two months after an abortion, hope this helps.

Ttcmumma · 07/04/2024 14:32

It's a very strong positive so I'd say likely atleast some retained product in there x

Cronchy · 07/04/2024 16:05

It’s a very strong positive so I think it’s either retained, failed or you’re pregnant again? Could you be pregnant again?
did they tell you to test after the abortion, have you ever got a negative? What’s made you test now? Or have you been testing all along - and if so has the positive for darker/lighter at any point?
you definitely need to speak to someone though I think, with such a strong positive.

Cronchy · 07/04/2024 16:07

Sorry I did really poor reading there I see you’ve been testing and you’re going to see someone. Hopefully they can give you some answers on Friday, I think if you have any pain or anything abnormal before then, like bleeding you should ask to be seen quicker

SnookyPook · 07/04/2024 16:46

I agree, that's a super strong positive still. I'd be worried about retained products. Not quite the same but I had MC last year and was testing negative 3 weeks after the bleeding stopped. I'd definitely push for further checks.

ppgeo19 · 07/04/2024 17:00

Yeah there's no chance it's a new pregancy I couldn't have intercourse due to bleeding 😂😭 and I've been testing every week to hope it fades and all my tests have been very strong the only different test was going from 3+ weeks to 2-3 weeks on a clear blue and I'm still showing 2-3 weeks on a clear blue, even after I gave birth in October I was negative 2 weeks later so I assumed I would be now! But guess that's not the case

I had a negative test quick quickly after my medical abortion. I think it was around 3 weeks after due to another pregnancy scare (Yes, 18, in an abusive relationship and extremely stupid before anyone judges 🙈).

It does seem very strong OP. I'd say you might have some retained placenta in there which you'll find out on Friday I presume. If you start to get pains, or a fever etc make sure you get medical attention ASAP.

KeinLiebeslied54321 · 07/04/2024 18:09

@jf1992x we all make mistakes in one way or another - glad you escaped that relationship though.

Hi lovely,
No personal experience in this but my friend had to have a d&c at 10 weeks and was testing positive for a good 5 months with her HCG levels.
I don't know what's normal or not but that's what she told me x

bagheera92 · 07/04/2024 19:53

Hi Smile I went through this 2 years ago. I had a medical termination at 6 weeks.
Witnessed lumps etc nurses thought I had passed everything as I had mine in hospital. Still actively bleeding
2 weeks later I had a strong positive test so called the ward they got me back in same day scanned and I had retained product. I had to repeat the procedure again (still bleeding) took another test 2 weeks later that was still showing positive
I was scanned again & I had still not passed everything so I did end up having surgery. I found it very traumatic and was diagnosed with ptsd from it.
I do hope you get sorted ❤️

CJ0374 · 07/04/2024 20:22

I'm sorry you are going through this. How long have you been bleeding OP? Have you had a period since?
I had a TFMR at 12weeks via medical management and it was in hospital. I did pass the foetus, but continued to bleed for 3mths. It was my 1st pregnancy, I wasn't advised to do further pregnancy tests and wasn't on MN at the time- hence had no idea that bleeding on and off for 3mths was abnormal. (sounds silly to say that now!)
Bleeding stopped, then a week later my period started. The heaviest I've ever had but for only 2 days- and out came a small retained product. 10p sized. Everything settled and I was fine after that.

You may well have a small retained product and I'm glad you are getting it checked. I did a lot of reading after my experience and read that the uterus will try everything to expel anything left behind. You may well find it comes out naturally, but the scan should show what is going on. x

ppgeo19 · 07/04/2024 20:33

I have just had a baby in October so I know my hormones and body is all over the place, ive had no peroid yet and I'm still spotting on and off to this day

CJ0374 · 07/04/2024 21:06

You haven't had a period and spotting since the birth in Oct or the latest pregnancy 5 weeks ago?

HangoverPart4 · 07/04/2024 21:43

Hi,

NC'd for this :(

Yes I have experience of this 6 years ago. I had termination around 6-8 weeks, passed a lot of bloods and clots and thought it was over. The termination failed and I didn't realise for a good few weeks till my belly continued to grow. I went back to the clinic weeks later for them to tell me the termination had failed and they advise I do not continue the pregnancy, but because I was so far gone I had to have a surgical termination which they could only perform in their London clinic. I can't remember how far gone I was, but yes it was traumatising. I was over 14 weeks as I had to be put to sleep. From memory I was around 18 weeks, but in all honesty I can't remember as it was such a blur. Please go back and get this checked out. PM me if you have any questions, sorry to hear you are going through this xx

ppgeo19 · 11/04/2024 12:24

I had a peroid in January but obviously got pregnant in February/end of January. I haven't had a peroid since still the abortion it's been 6 weeks now and I'm still bleeding and still showing postives. I've had no pain/not feeling unwell but my boobs have been hurting alot so has my gums, but I have a scan tommorow so hopefully nothings wrong 😬

HangoverPart4 · 11/04/2024 21:06

@ppgeo19 let us know how you get on. It does sound as if the abortion has failed but fingers crossed it hasn't !!!

Dareisayiseethesunshine · 11/04/2024 21:09

Hope everything goes well tomorrow op.

KitKat1985 · 12/04/2024 20:38

How did it go OP?

ppgeo19 · 13/04/2024 23:06

Turns out it is tissue and clots still inside so have been given a surgery date to get then removed.
Thank you 🥰

Can anyone advise me 😥 I had a medical also
my last pills were yesterday at 2pm
no bleeding or pain
I’ve had a pale brown cm once last night
once today which is a chalky substance
bpas has sent me for a scan Monday
does this sound like a failed abortion

ppgeo19 · 28/04/2024 12:53

They said it can take upto 24hrs to work sometimes so could be just slow, I only spotted and it worked especially if you're very early so hopefully it has worked, I'd not I had to have suction and they where so lovely and caring and polite about it and gave me conception on the day at the same time

This happened to me..had a medical termination and had retained product as I was still bleeding heavy 6weeks after.. it was horrible they ended up giving me a internal scrape..

TheDreamyAquaPoster · 19/01/2025 17:37

Im waiting for a scan in few weeks. im still am convinced I'm pregnant even tho Im definitely sure I passed the baby. I feel like I'm going crazy has anyone had this. I had serious regret after I did it so don't know if I'm going crazy. 😬🤣 like the chances of a baby being there is so low I know it but I've been getting fluttering in different places of my stomach for about a week now my stomach has been bloated ever since and I worked out today I'd be about 17 weeks if I'm still pregnant.
