20 week scan, should it be easy to identify the sex ?

We've had our 20 week scan today and we asked what the sex of our baby was - sonographer had a look but said she wouldn't like to say as she couldn't see clearly enough. She said there was nothing visable to suggest a boy so I responded well surely it must be a girl then but she said not necessarily !

Gutted really, had built myself up that today would be the day we would find out and we are still none the wiser !

it should be , if baby is in a good position , with legs apart and flashing its bits at the screen!

absence of boy bits or not seeing boy bits is not the same as there being no boy bits...

dizzydixies · 25/03/2008 19:17

hi foghorn - apparently the male's genital areas are quite apparent and the female presents as 3 distinct lines

it may have been more to do with positioning of baby rather than the bits?

they can be quite wary of giving out info if they're not 100% or close to it, I would imagine its too important to make a mistake over

FoghornLeghorn · 25/03/2008 19:18

Logic is telling me that Lulu but surely if it's a boy she would've seen something to suggest that?
I'll be equally as happy with a boy or girl but not knowing is driving me insane

Oh no it's awful when you have your mind set & can't find out.

The only way now is to have a priavte sexing scan is that an option?

ScoobyDoo · 25/03/2008 19:19

The only problem is she obviously could not see properly & thats why she would not answer, if she could have seen properly i am sure she would have said either the bits were there or not there....

FoghornLeghorn · 25/03/2008 19:20

She did say the position of the baby was making it hard to see and he/she wasn't budging even being poked about.

Have looked into private sexing scan this afternoon but wondering if we are likely to get the same answers, then I'll be really peeved having spent £80 on it !

depends on how the legs are positioned and how the baby is moving around

i am sure she would have told you if possible..

frustrating i know, happened to my sister rubyslippers, and she had 2 or 3 more scans during her pregnancy and they were never able to tell her the gender .

she had a boy

Do small penises run in the family?

elfsmummy · 25/03/2008 19:25

Same thing happened to us.

We were keen to find out. Sonographer really accomodating and getting me to jig around and try to get baby moving etc. Still kept its legs crossed.

Was really peeed off.

Now I'm 38 weeks and quite glad I don't know. (resisted private sexing scans) Very excited about approaching birth etc and it being different to our experience with DD (we found out at 16 weeks with her)

The initial frustration does wear off!

Lulumama · 25/03/2008 19:25

i like your tombliboos, hatrick.. and i thought you would be blonde ! but everyone says that to me too

FoghornLeghorn · 25/03/2008 19:25

With DS2 I had the same thing and thought he was most prob a girl. I didn't mind either way. I think it's exciting not to know - otherise, as someone said, you can pay for a private scan.

Swedes · 25/03/2008 19:29

I was very pleased to have another boy but I have to confess to comparing his bits with other male babies on the postnatal ward.

fairylights · 25/03/2008 19:29

hi foghorn, the very same thing happened to me with our ds, i was so geared up to finding out and had been looking forward to it whilst languishing in my hospital bed on drip to be rehydrated because i was so ill..
and then the little monkey decided to make it impossible to tell properly! I was so upset, but in the end i did enjoy having the surprise, i was SURE he was a girl - how wrong i was!

sweetkitty · 25/03/2008 19:46

oh foggie was thinking today was the day for you, pity they couldn't tell you for sure, with DD2 the sonographer said "I think it's female have nothing there to say it's male" we ended up having a private scan as well.

This one I thought I could see "something" between it's legs but then the sonographer said "girl" and theres the 3 lines which I couldnt see but hey it's her job!

If it were me with my lack of patience I would go for a private scan.

They couldn't tell with dd because the cord was running between her legs and blocking the view.

Lulumama · 25/03/2008 19:57

i had blonde streaks for a while, but am a resolute brunette. see profile !! you look like you are having lots of fun in that pic too!
