20 week scan, should it be easy to identify the sex ?

We've had our 20 week scan today and we asked what the sex of our baby was - sonographer had a look but said she wouldn't like to say as she couldn't see clearly enough. She said there was nothing visable to suggest a boy so I responded well surely it must be a girl then but she said not necessarily !

Gutted really, had built myself up that today would be the day we would find out and we are still none the wiser !

hatrick - I can see two little lines sticking up I take it the first one is his cord and the second his winky? Little doubt there then

Foghorn the thing about paying for a private scan is they generally tend to be a bit more accomodating. I had a private scan with ds, I asked before hand what would happen if they were not in a good postition and I was told that I would be asked to go get a hot/cold drink and something sugary to eat and have a walk to get the baby bouncing.

It took a while to get ds in the right place and much prodding and poking and it wasn't obvious at first but eventually we did get a very obvious showing of his boyness and I have it on dvd to show him and embaress him

Oooh and also getting a 3d scan which are way clearer might make it more obvious.

They don't like to say unless they can be really sure. Our sonographer was really cagey despite the fact we'd had an amnio so we knew and the little blighter was, to put it bluntly, playing with himself quite clearly on the scan.

At DDs 20 week scan we got exactly the same response as you but we had a later scan for a problem and they confirmed then, she was definitely a girl.

At our 20 week scan it was shockingly clear that our LO was a DD. She was laying there with her legs wide open and I clearly saw the three white lines. I said to the sonographer 'it looks like a girl' she grinned and said 'I think you're right!'. DD is now almost 7 months and I hope that's the last time she lays down with her legs wide open for at least 18 years!

Hi everyone, thanks so much for your messages

I am starting to think now maybe it wasn't meant to be .... maybe fate was that we shouldn't know ..... I just can't make up my mind..... plus a friend told me of her friend who had 3 different scans all sexing a boy and they then had a girl, I think that's just likely to be my luck atm.

I had a private scan with ds2 and found out at 12 weeks that he was a boy.

Sonographer told my friend she was having a girl. Adam was born a few months later... And that was a private scan!
