Over or under bump maternity trousers/jeans?

Hi all, looking for advice please before I do some online shopping for maternity clothes.

Do you prefer under or over bump maternity trousers? I will be heavily pregnant over summer and I have a feeling under the bump will be less sweaty/more comfortable. However, will I feel like the trousers are slipping down all the time?

Any thoughts appreciated! Thanks!

I can't get under ones to work at all, so I vote over, even in summer. I'd go for big, airy 3/4 length trousers or even better, light cotton harem pants - the ones you find in hippy shops.

I'd also recommend to get everything from Vinted so you can work out what you like without spending a fortune.

I liked the under bump jeans. Never upped down. Meant I could wear the first few weeks after baby also before back in normal jeans as not loads of excess fabric

Likeagoodday · 03/02/2024 13:13

Over the bump, also useful for the first Sunday roast post birth 😁

shouldbesleepingnotscrolling · 03/02/2024 13:14

Over bump for me, so comfy!

Shouldbedoing · 03/02/2024 13:15

Under bump always made me feel like I needed to wee!

DuploTrain · 03/02/2024 13:17

I hated over the bump things.. they’re too loose until you’re very very pregnant so I felt like I was always sticking my belly out to stop them falling down.

For under bump I mostly wore leggings/ stretchy trousers and just folded the waistband down a bit. Didn’t buy many actual maternity items.

Dresses will probably be most comfortable for the summer.

I really wouldn’t buy anything too far in advance though - you don’t know how your body shape will be and what will be comfortable.

I never understood how under the bump stuff worked. I was heavily pregnant over the summer too and over the bump trousers were fine, especially for work

cryinglaughing · 03/02/2024 13:24

Over.
Under were a waste of time and money

FluffMagnet · 03/02/2024 13:24

My preference was over the bump, but agree that in summer I went for dresses and many empire styles can work for maternity even if not expressly so. I had a colleague who opulent stand over the bump, and just continued with her normal trousers plus an elastic hair band on the button to expand as she got better (with flies left open) and a long line top. Worked for her through 3 pregnancies!

LittleRobins · 03/02/2024 13:35

I can’t stand either and have to wear dresses every day! Maybe wait til you’re a bit further along and try some on to see what you find best?

I preferred over the bump because the under bump ones just fell down all the time.
However, I gave birth in July and from about May I lived in maxi dresses / flowy dresses as I was sweating lol

Pipplet · 03/02/2024 13:50

It probably depends on your body shape I guess. Do your hips hold jeans up easily when you're not pregnant, or do they always slip down? Are you slim with a bump that sits all at the front, or is the bump/any excess weight perhaps a little more spread out? And so on.

If it helps, I'm slim, with smallish hips, and jeans often slip down outwith pregnancy, but shorts stay up. I preferred over bump trousers and under bump shorts.

But I think you really should order a couple of each type and return the ones you don't get on with.

HappyAsASandboy · 03/02/2024 14:22

First pregnancy - under bump always.

Subsequent pregnancies - over bump always because under bump irritated CS scar.

MixedCouple · 03/02/2024 14:24

They do Over bump cotton hareem trousers on Amazon.
Under do want work for me at all. Love my over belly leggings

SleepingStandingUp · 03/02/2024 14:30

Over over over.

In summer, I used to wear over the bump thin trousers and they were fine. Also over the bump tights.
Best boy of pregnancy

BertieBotts · 03/02/2024 14:32

Over. I was due in August twice - I lived in maternity leggings and tunics mostly.

Very stretchy harem type pants are also brilliant - loved these. And men's jogging bottoms!

Blueuggboots · 03/02/2024 14:32

I liked over the bump ones - much comfier!

BertieBotts · 03/02/2024 14:33

And yes to under bump shorts. One summer when I was prgenant Primark were doing these waffle shorts (not maternity specific) for about £3 each and I bought three of those and lived in them.

MrsB2019x · 03/02/2024 14:59

Over bump all day long

When I needed to wear them before I had a big bump I just rolled down the excess fabric a bit and that worked fine

MrsB2019x · 03/02/2024 15:58

Sorry double post!

pumpkinpiee · 03/02/2024 16:00

I couldn’t bear to wear proper trousers/jeans, especially in summer! I tried both and found both types uncomfortable. I instead opted for big shirts over leggings or floaty dresses

pistachiopastry · 03/02/2024 17:12

Thank you SO much for all the replies.
Really appreciate it.

Looks like the majority vote is for over the bump (with the exception of shorts maybe!). And as someone said, I'm maybe jumping the gun and should wait a bit to see how my shape develops... will do some browsing now in any case.

Thanks again!

@pistachiopastry - I recommend h and m for maternity stuff. I bought a pair of under bump jeans, and the breastfeeding vests are excellent for day and nighttime at really good value as they aren’t worn forever

FlyOnTheWall89 · 03/02/2024 19:38

Over 100%...In the summer tho, you can just wear floaty dresses which is ideal!

Nat6999 · 03/02/2024 19:39

Over bump, stops that Pooh Bear look with tops.t
