Is this my waters? Quick responses appreciated!

Hi all
I am currently 40+5. Have had a bad stomach the past couple of days which has resulted in lots of going to the loo. Just stood up off the toilet and had a little gush of liquid followed by some trickles down the leg. As I’d just been to the toilet thought it would be odd to be wee. Looks clear more like it would be my waters but doesn’t seem enough?

I then felt like I needed to wee so I decided to do it in the bath so I could compare the colour difference. The wee in the bath is pale yellow as you would expect compared to what’s on the floor which is clear.

is this my waters or is there just not enough for it to be so?

thank you!

If it's your waters you'll probably continue to randomly gush for a while. But if in doubt, just call maternity triage anyway and see what they want you to do. Best of luck!

MamaBearsss · 21/01/2024 15:15

Call triage

Chaiandtoast · 21/01/2024 15:15

If it’s your waters it’ll probably keep leaking
but you can always phone if you’re unsure

SummitOfMountWashmore · 21/01/2024 15:17

Probably. Is there a smell to it? Pop a maternity pad on, you will likely have some more leaking. It's not always a big theatrical gush like the movies (although mine was, there was no mistake!)

Make a note of the time and call triage so you're on their radar.

Fuckitydoodah · 21/01/2024 15:17

You'll continue to get little gushes if it's your waters. Put a maternity pad in your pants. If it happens again it'll have a smell a bit like straw. Have you got back ache or any tummy pains? A bit like when you're due on.

FawnFrenchieMum · 21/01/2024 15:22

Sounds similar to mine, if I hadn’t have just got off the toilet I’m not sure I’d have known. Call the triage, they will probably ask you to go in to check. They then give you so many hours to start naturally before inducing you if it doesn’t.

Sammie1990 · 21/01/2024 15:23

Hi all
thanks for replies. I had 2 sweeps last week where they said I was 3cm dilated, cervix favourable and membranes ‘bulging’ so have had one and off cramps since then really but not contraction like pain. I’ve been for a walk today and noticed more sharp ‘lightening’ type pain. I will put a pad on and carry on. Thanks for the advice really hoping it is the start as I will be induced next week if he doesn’t make an appearance and I would much rather a natural birth!

Comments about continuing to get gushes aren't always true. With my son my waters broke in my sister's car, I felt nothing but wet and had a dog sat next to me so thought she peed on me. It was only because it didn't smell of pee and I was far more wet than she was that we went in to get checked. The hospital also told me I had peed myself and it wasn't my waters as I had no more fluid at all. I insisted not to be sent home as my sister's car did not smell of pee at all so they scanned me and low and behold, 80% of his waters were gone with no further trickling at all!

FawnFrenchieMum · 21/01/2024 15:32

I don’t recall getting much more either (it was 17 years ago mind!).

Mumaway · 21/01/2024 15:47

Possibly hind waters. Mine would trickle when lying/sitting but stop when standing. It became a problem as didn't progress into labour so high risk for infection. Ring maternity unit, they will ask you to come along and do a test which confirms if it's waters. If it is, they may induce you/cover with antibiotics

OldTinHat · 21/01/2024 16:05

My waters went at 7am on my due date. Went for a wee but everytime I stood up from the toilet, water gushed out. I couldn't work out what was going on!

DC was born at 2.30pm that afternoon!

Good luck OP!!

MillicentTheMagnificent · 21/01/2024 16:08

I also didn't continue to have gushes. Just one little gush and that was it. My forewaters had gone but not my hindwaters (I think). I'd phone the triage tbh. It can be a problem if your waters go and then don't give birth within a certain amount of time I think, so I wouldn't just carry on if it were me Flowers

Chanel05 · 21/01/2024 16:16

It should have a sweet smell if it's your waters. Ring triage. They'll ask you to pop a pad on and see if it starts to fill up.

Namechange1267 · 21/01/2024 16:17

If they smell like semen it’s your waters, ammonia urine. Midwife’s are sniffing for the semen smell, gross but true!

littlemousebigcheese · 21/01/2024 16:20

My waters only broke during labour so I never had that movie style gush!

Sunflower8848 · 21/01/2024 16:24

Yeah I think that’s your waters. Good luck!

Jessforless · 21/01/2024 16:26

Sounds like waters to me

PiggieWig · 21/01/2024 16:30

Sounds like your waters. Are you having any contractions yet? I’d give the midwives a call but good luck! You’ll be holding your baby soon 👶

PickledScrump · 21/01/2024 16:35

Looks like it could be waters, my first my hind waters went and only had trickles. It’s really important you ring triage and get checked though as if it is waters there’s a risk of infection the longer your left without delivering.

TheLovleyChebbyMcGee · 21/01/2024 16:40

Maybe hindwaters, that happened with my first and it wasn't a lot. With my second my waters went fully standing up after a wee and it was a large amount, no mistaking it then!

Sammie1990 · 21/01/2024 16:56

It’s so hard to know what to do. I live about 40 mins away from the hospital so I think I’ll see how I go the next couple of hours and then give them a ring. I haven’t got any obvious pains at this stage I think you’re always in some kind of pain 😂

I’ve just rubbed some tissue on the floor where it was and I think it does smell a bit like urine. Put a pad on and no more liquid but when I’ve just had a wee there looks like there is another liquid in it like clear/cloudy if that makes sense

@Sammie1990 I had no pain when my waters partially broke and I didn't go into labour naturally either. I had to be induced 24 hours later due to risk of infection and my sons heart rate was all over the place. I was on monitors the entire time before and during the induction as initially they were going to emergency c section him out x

Hi
did you have a similar amount to me and how did you know it was your waters and not urine? Thanks

@Sammie1990 a little bit more than you but he still had some hind waters that stayed in place until hours after I was induced. It was in my underwear and shorts, I didn't think it was waters but my mum was insistent it did not smell of pee so made me go in. I did eat a McDonald's on the way in as I was convinced it was nothing (I was 37+5 with my first so thought no way!) This was on a Friday afternoon, induced Saturday afternoon and born Sunday evening. He's 5 now and healthy but glad I went in when I did. Worst they'll do is send you home x
