What did you find harder - first or third trimester?

Just that really.

With my first, the first trimester was hands down the most horrific time with the 24/7 nausea, and I found the rest of the pregnancy not too demanding.

However, I am now 32 weeks with my second and I feel awful. Not nausea but so uncomfortable, exhausted, bloated, can't sleep, achey - just everything!! Much harder than the first trimester this time.

Which one did you find harder?

Third by a mile for all the reasons you've stayed. I went on maternity at the earliest possible opportunity just to get some rest

robin43 · 15/12/2023 10:08

@TeddyBeans I'm starting my leave next week as I can't do anything else. I am dreading another month and half or so of this, I feel like I'm barely surviving (sorry to be dramatic haha) but is so hard!

Third was hardest. With the first trimester if you’re feeling ill you can rest a bit. By third trimester you’re so uncomfortable that it’s hard to get much rest! Plus there’s the anticipation of when you might go into labour and the panic of making sure you have everything ready.

Third trimester def in first pregnancy, I didn't have her until 41 wks those last few weeks were horrendous and I had terrible heartburn. Heartburn started around 31wks. I found the bigger I got the more uncomfortable I was. 37-41 wks def the worst but prob 39-41 extremely bad! Moving in bed was so difficult and the weight of bump just felt so heavy. I was a petite size 6-8 and baby was 8lb.

Second pregnancy it was towards end of first trimester and into second trimester that was the worst. From 11-17wks. I felt sick, dizzy and kept fainting. Iron levels were low and I cldnt take those awful tablets as they made me terribly constipated! She was born unexpectedly at 37wks so I never got that uncomfortable stage with her and had medication for heartburn.

Definitely the third, I worked up until 38 weeks (she came at 38 weeks!) and I struggled with most everyday tasks as she was so low so walking the dog round the block took me over an hour! Never mind the multiple wake up wees in the night!

The first trimester was tough but at least I could have some sleep!

tulipsunday · 15/12/2023 11:16

The first. Hated the nausea even though wasn't that bad. Didn't like being off my normal food, weird sense of the smell and the anxiety I had following miscarriages. In the third now and apart from a bit achey I generally feel good and am active

Torganer · 15/12/2023 11:18

First. Third was a breeze, I worked right up until I gave birth.

GodspeedJune · 15/12/2023 11:22

First was the hardest for me, the constant nausea and subsequent constant carby snacking. I think I put on a stone in the first trimester!

Second was the best, third was still ok mostly.

Unexpectedlysinglemum · 15/12/2023 11:39

3rd as
I couldn't sleep and had lots of pains

Bells3032 · 15/12/2023 11:42

1st. firstly nausea but worst still was the sheer exhaustion. At least in the 3rd trimester work and other people have sympathy as they know you're pregnant. in the first trimester they don't know

ThomasinaLivesHere · 15/12/2023 11:43

For me there was one or two horrible weeks with first trimester with sickness and tiredness but third is more ongoing and annoying.

Babyboomtastic · 15/12/2023 11:43

Both were equally hard but for different reasons.

First was horrible in terms of constant nausea (I only vomited a few times and it was refreshing in comparison to the constant nausea). I was exhausted and basically I felt like I had the tail end of norovirus for 3 months.

Third was horrible because of horrific SPD (this started in the first trimester but was really bad by the end). I could only sleep for 45m at a time because of pain and couldn't leave the house without help.

toomuchtosay · 15/12/2023 12:10

The third with all mine but especially with 3rd having two younger children to look after and not being able to go too far from a toilet because when I needed to pee I needed to go right away. I also had a summer third trimester and that was awful, couldn't keep cool or comfortable.

reabies · 15/12/2023 12:12

Hated the whole of pregnancy to be honest, bar about 2 weeks in the second trimester when the sickness stopped and before the heartburn kicked in.

1st trimester was more mentally challenging, being pregnant and feeling so unwell and tired and not telling anyone about it, putting on a brave face etc. If I ever have a second I don't think I'll bother keeping it under wraps until 12w if I'm feeling like shit.

3rd trimester everyone can see you're pregnant so cuts you some slack, but like PP I had horrible SPD, look me forever to get anywhere and hurt all the time. I had awful heartburn and could barely sleep. I felt so huge lugging the bump around. And was just mentally drained and really ready to meet the baby so the last few weeks were boring and painful.

On the flip side, hating pregnancy so much meant the newborn phase felt like a doddle.

MilkChocolateCookie · 15/12/2023 12:14

Third for me, but that was because my morning sickness wasn't too bad.

Salamander91 · 15/12/2023 13:24

Third for sure but I'm lucky in that I haven't had morning sickness with any of my kids. I do make giant babies though so the third trimester is rough 🙈

NonSequentialRhubarb · 15/12/2023 13:29

I think physically the first was the worst for me. The nausea, hunger and complete lack of energy were worse than the insomnia which was my only physical symptom later on.

But the third felt worse because I had the mindset that I was so close to being finished and that made everything feel more tedious. Kind of like when you're in a crap job and you find tiny positives to stop yourself going insane, but once you hand your notice in you stop doing that and just want it to be over.

Christabelladaisy · 15/12/2023 13:30

I had DD in July, and my third trimester was awful after a relatively straightforward pregnancy up to that point. I could barely walk towards the end. It was such a relief to have her!

JollyMollyPolly · 15/12/2023 13:31

Third trimester.... especially with my twins, the weight of them was just incredible!

MizzMarple · 15/12/2023 13:36

3rd best, 2nd worst in first 2 pregnancies. Was utterly exhausted by the constant vomiting by that point and kept fainting as I was so dehydrated. I stopped working at 29 weeks for my second and then I could actually rest.

CrispsandCheeseSandwich · 15/12/2023 13:40

First in both pregnancies by an absolute country mile!

I had quite bad pelvic pain in the third trimester both times, along with general tiredness, achey, and reflux. But I would take anything over the morning sickness I had

brownbutterfrangipanetart · 15/12/2023 13:40

Definitely third for reasons you said but I was lucky in not having sickness in the first

SushiAndSkittles · 15/12/2023 13:43

Third! I’m 36 weeks today and so uncomfortable! Not to mention the heartburn 😖

dullandgrey · 15/12/2023 13:43

Both hard in different ways! First the constant nausea and fatigue plus food aversion was hard to deal with. Especially as people didn't know I was pregnant. Had to call in sick at work and it was a huge issue for them so had to tell them earlier that I had liked. Third hard as being mobile is much harder and sleeping. Plus really bad heartburn. So I'd say as bad as eachother but in different ways. The second trimester really was a breeze though!

Pickles2023 · 15/12/2023 13:44

In my first pregnancy it was all awful 😂 hyperemesis till 16 weeks so was in and out of hospital. Second trimester was bed bound with paralysing migraines. (You know where you cant talk and half your body goes numb and cant move) then at 28 weeks i went into hospital and never came out due to preeclampsia 😅 the whole time was a write off, couldnt do anything.

Currently in second pregnancy...no symptoms or anything this time, 16 weeks. So now im anxious that as its a doddle something must be wrong haha
