Light brown discharge, nearly 6 weeks pregnant

Hi everyone,

I had an early miscarriage in the summer and somehow miraculously found out I was pregnant again in September.

I’m 5 weeks + 5 days based on LMP but my pregnancy test said 3+ weeks when I last did one on Saturday whereas my previous one never got past 1-2 weeks.

However today I’ve just found a tiny bit of very light brown discharge in my underwear which is exactly how my mc started so I’m terrified I’m about to have another. Last time it took another 24 hours before it turned pink then the next morning it was red so I know it’s a waiting game but I can’t stand it.

I’ve read as many as these posts as I can but just getting overwhelmed with info.

Has anyone had very light brown discharge at 5-6 weeks and it was ok? I’m so scared right now, it’s such a light colour it’s hard to work out what colour it is, all I know is it’s a different colour than usual and it’s the same as last time

Congratulations on your pregnancy but sorry you’re having this worry. Spotting is surprisingly common in early pregnancy! With my first pregnancy I had light brown spotting at around 6 weeks that lasted a couple of days. I phoned the EPU and they told me brown blood is old and it would be due to implantation. They also said not to worry unless there was also cramping or if the spotting turned to heavy bleeding. DC is now a healthy, happy 1 year old so it’s definitely not always bad news. Hope everything is ok for you!

I feel for you, the wait is agonising and then you worry if worrying too much will somehow negatively affect things.

I had 2 early miscarriages which did start this way. I then fell pregnant again and got put on progesterone supplements. This pregnancy went to term and she is now a healthy 1 year old. I don’t know if it was the progesterone obviously but it didn’t hurt. I think the guidance is to give this now after two losses. Hopefully you don’t need it but you f you do I would push for it.

@Bumble84 thank you, I might contact my midwife and see what she says. I’m hesitant to go back to my EPU as I ended up there last time and the woman wasn’t very sympathetic, just very matter of fact about how common miscarriages are and made me feel stupid for being upset.

@OopsieeDaisy thank you hopefully that’s all this is. Last time it had turned pink by the next morning which it hasn’t yet but I’m dreading today in case I see that or red

I've been having spotting too but mine is pink/bright red. Got a scan today with EPU at 2:30 - could you call an EPU at another hospital if you don't want to go where you went last time? Or can you afford a private scan? Everything I have read is so 50/50, obviously no one can say without checking us over but I have read a lot of people having spotting in pregnancy and it being fine

Buttercup1992 · 03/10/2023 16:39

@excited18 how did you get on?

I did at both 4/5ish weeks pregnant (I didn’t know I was pregnant at this point I thought it was my period) and then again at 6.5 weeks. I’m now 27 weeks pregnant with a healthy pregnancy and one happy growing baby 😊

excited18 · 03/10/2023 17:01

@Buttercup1992 all fine, I've got a haematoma.. I think they are quite common - yours could be the same thing as she said it can be brown too

Buttercup1992 · 03/10/2023 18:08

@excited18 glad to hear all good with your baby!

@MrsJ6921 I’m praying that’ll happen for me! I’ve had nothing else yet but so anxious, can’t stop going to the loo to check

I have had some level of spotting every single day,all different colours and amounts since I was 6 weeks. I am now 12 weeks. Have had 4 scans. Baby is perfect tg. Try not to worry. It can happen. Stretching hormones etc

Bumble84 · 04/10/2023 21:15

@Buttercup1992 how are you getting on? Hope things are ok for you.

Buttercup1992 · 04/10/2023 21:46

@Bumble84 thanks for your message, I haven’t had anything else for the last 48 hours so I’m praying that’s a good sign!

That’s got to be positive then surely. It’s an anxious wait, I remember it all to well. I hope everything works out for you.

LolaJ87 · 05/10/2023 11:59

I had this, 3 separate times in early pregnancy. Had scans where everything looked fine, they couldn't see any cause of the spotting so I was told not to worry unless it turned red and was enough to fill a pad.

My little boy is almost 10 months old and absolutely perfect. I did have a low lying placenta for a while, I wondered if the spotting was caused by that forming on the cervix but that was just my own musing, I never asked a professional.

Buttercup1992 · 05/10/2023 16:37

I think I spoke too soon. I’ve just had some pink/light red spotting so I’m terrified it’s now getting worse.
However today I’ve also had really bad nausea which is new and I still have very sore breasts, so praying that’s a sign that it’s just spotting as I still have pregnancy symptoms and it’ll pass!

OopsieeDaisy · 06/10/2023 08:21

Still having pregnancy symptoms is often a positive sign, how are things this morning?

Buttercup1992 · 06/10/2023 10:27

@OopsieeDaisy thanks for your message. I had a little bit of spotting again first thing this morning but none since.
I still have very tender breasts but the nausea isn’t as bad today - but it was worse yesterday than any other day so it might just go up and down a bit.
I’ve contacted my midwife who said she’ll call the EPAU this morning so just waiting to hear back

OP posts:
MrsJ6921 · 06/10/2023 11:39

@Buttercup1992 i have everything crossed for you. If it’s any reassurance some days I felt better than others in terms of nausea and by about 9 weeks most of my symptoms seemed to have calmed down.

LolaJ87 · 06/10/2023 11:39

Keeping everything crossed for you @Buttercup1992

Buttercup1992 · 06/10/2023 11:42

@LolaJ87 @MrsJ6921 thank you both.
The EPAU has asked me to go in on Monday for a blood test so they can verify the pregnancy then they’ll book in a scan, so I just need to wait and see if anything happens over the weekend 😞

The waiting is the worst, but try to stay as positive as you can. Everything is more likely to be fine than not.

Buttercup1992 · 06/10/2023 13:11

@LolaJ87 thank you. Can I ask how long the spotting lasted for you each time?

It was about 3 days the first time - I thought it was my period, they're irregular and I didn't take a pregnancy test until after it stopped instead of getting heavier. I was afraid that it might be a chemical pregnancy, but it wasn't, just implantation bleeding. It was less at 6 weeks (just over one day when I wiped IYKWIM) and the same again at 9 weeks.

SunshineIndoors123 · 06/10/2023 14:36

Hi, I had some brown spotting around 5 or 6 weeks, and again at 9 weeks. Everything was fine, said baby is now 14 months old.

fivenonrouses · 06/10/2023 14:40

I bled throughout my first pregnancy and my baby was okay!
It could be implantation bleeding, your cervix being a bit irritated, the position of your uterus (it played a role in my bleeding somehow), etc...
none of these are alarming or distressing to your baby.
My doctor told me a good rule of thumb was that as long as it wasn't bright red and didn't fill a whole pad, to try not to worry!

Wish you and your little one all the best xx
