5-6 weeks ultrasound scan

Hi girls,

Could you kindly take a look at my photo and tell me what you think?

I booked a private scan thinking I was around 7wks, going by LMP and was hoping to see a heartbeat. I had a mmc a few months back so was hoping to be reassured.

I was told I'm somewhere between 5-6 weeks and I am sure she said there was a yolk sac and fetal pole (my mind went into panic mode when I didn't see a heartbeat so I don't remember well).

Anyway I have attached the photo and I can't see much at all. Has anyone had anything similar?

Thanks so much for looking x

Did they do an internal or is this just external?

justanothermanicmonday1 · 23/07/2023 13:32

I haven't had a scan before 7 weeks tbh. With this pregnancy, I thought I was 7 weeks and 2 days. I went for a scan and turned out i was 6weeks and 2 days as I ovulated early. Saw the heartbeat and it was an external scan. I'd re book for another 2 weeks if it will put your mind at ease!

Kimbychick · 23/07/2023 13:51

Thanks for looking.

It was a abdominal scan. I was pretty sure of my dates but I suppose I could be a bit off.

Congratulations on your pregnancy! I am going to book another scan in a few days, I should def be over 6 weeks by then and I have always seen a heartbeat by then in previous scans with my other kids.

I just want to know one way or another. Thanks again for replying x

I think the heartbeat can only be sensed from 7 weeks earliest, possibly 8. I went in at 6 weeks thinking I was 8, and was told it's too early to hear a heartbeat but the scan showed there was definitely a baby in there.
Congratulations on your pregnancy and I hope everything goes smoothly for you!

Kimbychick · 23/07/2023 14:16

Thanks MayMi, I'm glad it turned out welll for you.

I think all pregnancies are different. I have seen a heartbeat at just over 6 weeks in my other pregnancies.

We'll see what next week brings. I was just really unsure of the scan photo as I can't make out a fetal pole or yolk sac! Us women just love to worry!

Thanks again x

I've had scans at around 6 weeks with both pregnancies (vaginal). The pic you sent looks very like what I saw with my twins which I think was just before 6 weeks. Except there were two circles obviously! I was a bit in shock with the whole twin news but I don't think I heard the heartbeats on that one. With my first son, the scan was around 6.5 weeks and I did.

Fingers crossed it all goes ok for you Smile

readingismycardio · 23/07/2023 15:00

I think it looks normal! At 5 weeks you can only see the gestational sac. Best of luck!!

Kimbychick · 23/07/2023 15:07

Hi @lifesnotaspectatorsport lifesnotaspectatorsport, thanks for your reply. I had actually wondered about twins as there are 2 of whatever is visible in the gestational sac. Would the sonographer not have mentioned this at the time though? To be fair she wasn't chatty at all and I was in and out in less than 5mins after paying £60 for it! You don't happen to have an old photo of your twins scan pic do you? I hope your pregnancies were healthy happy ones. Thanks so much for your reply x

Hi, if u don't mind me asking did u get the measurements of the gestational sac I had a scan yesterday and I'm worried about the sizing. Thanks.

Kimbychick · 23/07/2023 16:28

@abbmebtdab no I didn't get measurements sorry. She didn't tell much at all. I was in for less than 5mins. How far on are you? Do you have a photo? X

OP posts:
abbmebtdab · 23/07/2023 16:53

@Kimbychick
Mine was 5 mins too! Really rubbish experience to be honest. I thought I was bang on 6 weeks, she said sac is 7mm and that's 4 weeks. Sac was empty.

abbmebtdab · 23/07/2023 16:54

E erything I found online said 7mm is 5 weeks though so I'm confused. I could take 5 weeks but not 4! 🤷‍♀️

Kimbychick · 23/07/2023 17:04

@abbmebtdab aww that's so disappointing for you but try and stay positive. It's horrible going in excited then not seeing much. Was it a private scan?

I'm going to book another scan sometime next week and use a different company. I would say you are 5 weeks if that's what you are reading everywhere. So much can change within a few days at this stage. I won't settle til I see a heartbeat though x

Hi OP,
Sonographer here! I would agree with your scan, I can see a yolk sac and a small fetal pole - it’s actually a very clear picture considering it was an abdominal one! Looks to be between 5-6 weeks judging by the fetal pole. Did you track your last 3 menstrual cycles? Were they regular, ie 28 days?

Kimbychick · 23/07/2023 17:13

@AfterGlow87 wow thank you so much for responding. You have really made me feel better. You are the expert, I just can't see much!

My cycles are around 30 days. I think I ovulated around cd16 but could have been later. The things that's worrying me though is that I got my first positive test on 29th June. I got 3+ last week (16th July) on a clear blue digi.

This ultrasound is from 20th July. I just thought I was further along due to how long ago I tested positive.

Thanks again x

So your LMP and first positive test date would normally put you over the 6 week mark but without a transvaginal scan it’s very hard to say. If you’ve ovulated later that can affect the timings too! There’s every possibility the fetal pole is bigger but you just wouldn’t see it clear enough through the abdomen. I would give it a full week before your next scan and ask them to do an internal scan as it’s really the gold standard for early pregnancy and hopefully you’ll see a good change 🤞

lifesnotaspectatorsport · 23/07/2023 17:47

@Kimbychick I don't have the early scan photo on my phone - but it was basically the same as yours, times two. So two dark circles with a little bean shape inside! That was a non-identical twin pregnancy though, I guess it might be different if it's identical twins.

My scan was transvaginal so it sounds from the expert pp that you got a good look. Hopefully heartbeat on the next scan Smile

And yes, two good pregnancies and I'm watching the three of them running around right now!

Kimbychick · 23/07/2023 17:50

@AfterGlow87 thanks so much for that. I'll take your advice and book a scan for next Thursday. Although, I'm not sure if the private ultrasound clinic do transvaginal scans. I'll just be happy to see some progress if any. Thanks again x

Hey

I've had afew early scans before and this is what my scan photos looked like.

I'm preg now and was dated a week behind, also an abdominal scan, which I don't think are very good/accurate being that early.
I went in thinking it would be a internal scan.

I told my MW and she said to go off my LMP until the NHS 12 week scan and they'll date properly.

Have a look at some different clinics in your area as so some do/don't go internal scans.

Madeamom2018 · 23/07/2023 18:22

Hey,
This is perfectly normal and if they had any concerns they would of contacted EPAU for you.
every pregnancy is different aswell lots of factors to take in to consideration how hydrated you have been 48 hours up to the scan how full your bladder is if you have had bowel movement that day .
at this stage only the side of a poppy seed so even 24 hours can make a difference.
I hope that has helped 🙂

Kimbychick · 23/07/2023 18:26

@lifesnotaspectatorsport that's ok don't worry about the photos. Thanks so much for replying. Aww so glad you had good pregnancies and 3 healthy kids. Twins must be an amazing experience. I have 4 children already, you would think I would be an expert with all this pregnancy stuff but I still find myself worrying about everything and need reassurance 😂

@Kimbychick OMG five!!! Congratulations!

I must admit after the twins I didn't dare go for another in case I got twins again haha

Kimbychick · 23/07/2023 21:19

Sorry I have just caught up with all the replies and just want to say thank you all so much girls. I am feeling much better and reassured now. I will update after my scan in a week just incase the outcome helps someone.

@lifesnotaspectatorsport yes this will be my 5th. Alot of people tell me I must be crazy 😆. Once they get to the toddler stage I start getting broody again but this is definitely my last x

@AfterGlow87
hi there, sorry to jump on the thread but I read that your are a sonographer and I was after some advise if you can.

I should be 7 weeks, I noticed some brown discharge so called EPU and went for an early scan. I was told there was 2 sacs one looked empty whilst the other had a baby measuring 5+1 with no heartbeat yet as too early. I’ve been told to come back in 10 days. The following day I had a heavy bleed and passed some clots, still having some small bleeding. Have you come across this before, I know you can’t tell me my circumstance but could I of passed the empty sac, or does it sound like I have potentially lost the baby. Thanks in a fence. And thank you if anyone else replies

I'm so sorry and I hope you're ok.

This happened to me and unfortunately it was a MC. I tested a few days after I passed the clots and it came up negative.

I hope it's a different outcome for you.

I went on to fall pregnant the month after and had a healthy baby girl, I'm now holding her little sister as well.
