Early scan twins - cramping

Countrysidenest · 04/04/2023 19:41

I had an early scan last week and was dated around 5 weeks 6 days. Sonographer saw 2 gestational sacs and 2 yolk sacs but not yet any fetal poles. She reassured us this might be because it’s early still. We are due to go back in 2 days and I should be around 6 weeks 6 days. Today i’ve had some cramping on and off - nothing major and no bleeding at all. I got a sudden very sharp pain which lasted a few seconds and now I’m worried! Anyone have any positive stories!?

Cramping can be totally normal! I had it with both of mine: both times I freaked out and got checked over but was assured that it was normal as everything moves around and grows!
Just keep an eye out for other symptoms aswell!

Good luck with the scan in a couple days!

I've had intense cramping off and on my entire pregnancy so far, currently 19 weeks with twins and nothing wrong yet. Seems to just be stretching and discomfort.

FfoxRedN · 05/04/2023 05:23

@Countrysidenest I had my scan yesterday at 6w2d and found out I'm pregnant with twins too. I've had quite strong period type cramps and more than previously (this is my 5th pregnancy after loss so taking it day by day). All was well though, I think it's probably due to the extra space they'll need.
All the best for your scan 🥰

Countrysidenest · 05/04/2023 07:42

Thank you so much for your replies ladies. It’s so hard not to worry after 3 miscarriages too. Have woken up and my boobs don’t really hurt anymore so now i’m worrying. Did anyone have symptoms that used to come and go? So glad my scan is tomorrow. Hope all is well :( not sure i’ll sleep tonight!! 😑

@Countrysidenest our stories are so similar!! I don't have any children yet, so super anxious this time too.
I have terrible headaches and had the worst thrush ever last week but no sore boobs or tiredness really either. Started to feel a little nauseous yesterday and today but nothing major. Every pregnancy I've had different symptoms so I wouldn't worry. Easier said than done though. Hope all goes well tomorrow 😊 xx

Countrysidenest · 05/04/2023 07:56

Thank you so much for taking the time to reply! Wow so similar! We have a daughter already and she’s been keeping me going tbh. No time to overthink too much with a 2 year old to run about after! I feel like i’m going to drive myself crazy constantly symptom checking. Just need to think whatever happens, happens. I have no control over it! I’ll try to update the thread once i’ve been tomorrow morning. Xx

With my twin pregnancy I had terrible stretching pains in the first trimester, they were quite alarming at times. Symptoms Came And Went More Than With my singleton pregnancy too - I assumed my hormones were fluctuating even more than with one in there.

There's nothing you can do but try to relax and ride it out. Best of luck, hopefully you'll be feeling better soon.

Ridingfree · 05/04/2023 08:51

Oh so update I look forward to your news and wonder if it's twins.

Eggseggseverywhere · 05/04/2023 09:01

Cramps without bleeding would not worry me.
Good luck for tomorrow!

Countrysidenest · 05/04/2023 09:42

Thank you so much everyone! Yes no bleeding at all. I know it sounds awful but I wish my symptoms were stronger at this point and then maybe i’d relax a little but I know worrying is not good for my body either. My last pregnancy was a missed miscarriage and I’m just so worried it’ll happen again as this is the sort of gestation it happened. Was worried there wasn’t a fetal pole(s) at 5+6 but I guess that it can still be too early to see. So glad everyone else’s stories seem to be positive ! x

Huge congratulations! If you don’t mind me asking, what were they able to see on your scan so early on? She saw 2 sacs and 2 yolk sacs with mine but no fetal poles/heartbeats xxx

@Countrysidenest so I've got one sac, but hopefully two inner membranes she said she couldn't be confident of that. So mine are monochorionic and hopefully diamniotic. Each had a little heartbeat, but I am positive of my dates. They were measuring 6 weeks and I'm 6w2d. Anything less than 6 weeks and they'd struggle to get a heartbeat so hoping tomorrow you'll see those little flutters xx

Hope the scan is positive tomorrow!

FfoxRedN · 05/04/2023 20:07

@Countrysidenest they are incredible. I just hope these are ok, my previous 2 MMC were chromosomal, just hoping these are all good 🙏🏼. Hope all goes well tomorrow xx

Countrysidenest · 06/04/2023 11:26

Hi all - thought i’d make an update. 2 heartbeats seen ticking away this morning. Measuring slightly small - around 4 days for the bigger twin and the other twin is slightly smaller than that which I guess can be quite common? Thank you so much for taking the time to read my post and to all who have commented and offered reassurance :) xx

@Countrysidenest so glad it went well 🥰. All the best for the upcoming ones too xx

Eggseggseverywhere · 07/04/2023 17:13

Congratulations op! Fab news indeed!!

Countrysidenest · 08/04/2023 08:30

Thank you!! The hospital said they wouldn’t scan now until the 12 week scan - seems a long time to wait. She said if I was unsure about waiting, she’ll put in a request for the hospital to scan me in 3 weeks time. @FfoxRedN did they say how often you’d be scanned going forwards? Tempted to book in a private one xx

I'd go for your 12w scan as close to 12w as possible rather than earlier to give them a chance to grow which will give you a bit more certainty on dates. Let your midwife/hospital know you already know it's twins so they can book you in with a twin sonographer and give enough time.

I felt horrendous in the early days of my twin pregnancy, so many weird aches and pains that I didn't have with my singleton. It was an entirely different experience! I had a scan at 8+4 which was when I found out it was twins and then another at 10w as part of the harmony test. Then just stuck with nhs after that but had absolutely loads of scans throughout the pregnancy

JessicaPeach · 08/04/2023 08:35

I forgot to say congratulations! Welcome to the wonderful world of twins!

FfoxRedN · 08/04/2023 08:36

@Countrysidenest if you've had previous losses they should scan you every 2 weeks if you want to be? Certainly up to the 12 week scan. Unfortunately I've never made it that far and the last one I actually chose not to have any early scans as I was going away and didn't want bad news 🫣.

I think because she couldn't tell if mine were monoamniotic or diamniotic she's having me back in two weeks anyway so they can monitor properly, as one is riskier than the other.
Just ask for the 3 week one to be put through, they shouldn't have any issue with that especially with a twin pregnancy! xx

Countrysidenest · 17/04/2023 23:04

Thanks ladies! Got a private scan tomorrow afternoon so haven’t had a scan for 2 weeks so be interesting to see what’s actually going on in there! So nervous. Twin 2 was measuring quite a bit smaller. I have been feeling so nauseas every day. It goes away when i eat something but then back with a vengeance a few hours later! @FfoxRedN how’s everything going for you so far hun? Xx

OP posts:
FfoxRedN · 18/04/2023 05:18

@Countrysidenest hi lovely. I have the same nausea too! I had my scan yesterday, one of the twins sadly isn't growing anymore but the other is all looking good so far and right on dates and size! After the journey I've had I will be so so happy if just one makes it! Let me know how your scan goes 🥰 xx

Countrysidenest · 18/04/2023 08:03

Oh i’m so sorry to hear that❤ - I hope you’re doing okay. Oh yes absolutely, so glad the other js doing so well and right on track. I’ll let you know how my scan goes! Ridiculously nervous! X
