Never heard of this, unless you've been diagnosed with gestational diabetes in which case moderation with all sugary things is advised, I had GD and I was told I can only have few grapes if I want them

tobee · 24/12/2022 13:08

Oh yes, of course, on Mumsnet grapes are little bombs of sugar.

Only if you're a Labrador. And you mustn't eat chocolate either.
NHS 111 if you're worried. Online rather than phoning as they're probably busy with emergencies today.
And congratulations !

FFS please DO NOT call 111 and waste their time. Seriously WTAF. 111 is for serious health concerns. One of the standard questions is they as is if you're bleeding. Although I think they need to start asking "are you off your rocker" to some of the things I've read on here recently.

I cannot get over the absurdity of the original post and this one above 🤦‍♀️

Sandcastles24 · 24/12/2022 14:20

@AmazonPrim the post you quoted was supposed to be absurd. It was funny
OP if you are a dog a vet might be more help than 111 online
Congratulations on your pregnancy

@Ursuladevine all food since being pregnant leaves the worst taste in my mouth particularly in the evenings doesn't matter how many times I brush my teeth or rinse with mouth wash it doesn't go away grapes seem to take away the bad taste and keep it away, My teeth are fine My digestive system also fine, they don't give me the runs or anything although I wish they did because since being pregnant it's so hard to go! Dr did say eat more fruit and fibre to help but the only fruit that doesn't give me acid are grapes, I saw an article about grapes rising your body temp which makes them dangerous so that's why I was worried

tickticksnooze · 24/12/2022 19:24

Where did you read that?

Spockrates · 24/12/2022 19:25

@AmazonPrim this is my first pregnancy and I also suffer from anxiety so I worry alot about this baby I don't have anyone I could ask which is why I asked on here as I saw an article about grapes making your body temp rise which is why they should be avoided in pregnancy, since I eat so much of them it sent alarm bells ringing of course I didn't want to waste the NHS time another reason I asked on here.

They might be harmful if you drink them in fermented form in large quantities

IWillBeWaxingAnOwl · 24/12/2022 19:57

@Spockrates it appears to be a cultural belief - all the sites I can see about it are from south or south east Asia.

IWillBeWaxingAnOwl · 24/12/2022 19:58

Maybe just cut back a bit if you are worried eg not 500g a night? That must be pricey too!

Wolfiefan · 24/12/2022 20:01

You need to seek help with the anxiety. Having a baby can be anxiety inducing as it is. Yes avoid drinking grapes in the form of wine. But that’s all.

MajorCarolDanvers · 24/12/2022 20:02

Eat the grapes and stick to the NHS for advice

Thank you. Glad it wasn't lost on you, and most others too... I did say online...
Anyhoo. Merry Christmas !

Doodledeedum · 24/12/2022 22:58

OP I have heard this before, I think it's because of being able to wash them etc same with pre prepared fruit being on the list of foods to avoid and cold meats. I would say though if you've had regular check ups and baby is well so far it's ok. It's so easy to feel guilty about everything. I had smoked salmon at one point for a whole week and I was then sent a message about smoked salmon being on the barred list as the was a sudden risk of listeria.... go with how you've done so far. If you're really worried start giving it a miss .... the list changes all the time!

dementedpixie · 24/12/2022 23:05

The list doesn't change all the time
You can eat pre prepared fruits and cold meats
Cured meats and smoked salmon can be made safer by cooking them. Same with blue and soft cheeses - cook them and they are fine to eat

Summer2424 · 24/12/2022 23:13

Hi @Spockrates i had loads of summer fruit during my pregnancy including grapes! I call my bubba mango baby, i had loads lol!
Only bit of advice i would give is have grapes in the morning then you have all day to burn off the sugar x

user58202018484482910ugog19293843910 · 25/12/2022 11:27

@tobee they are if you're diabetic.

WeWereInParis · 25/12/2022 11:54

I read this. And then I looked at the study the "advice" was based on and it basically found that if you repeatedly gave pregnant rats an absolutely enormous of a certain chemical (which is present in tiny amounts in grapes), their babies have some slight organ problems. But you would have to eat more grapes than it is physically possibly to eat to come close to the amount that the rats were given I believe. And the chemical was also associated with some positive health things in pregnancy as well.

I think if you google any food, there will be an article telling you not to eat it in pregnancy. Follow the nhs advice and ignore everything else.

That's right 👆
