When did you start buying baby things?

Just that really, I’m 12 weeks this weekend and starting to think about when I’ll start buying things for the baby.
A friend told me she got some great Black Friday deals last year, I’ll be around 16 weeks then and DH thinks that’s still too early to get anything.
It’s our first baby and pretty clueless when to start, I’m quite organised in general so I think that’s why I’m getting the urge to make sure it’s all sorted early.

Lol not until the end!

But I'm a bit laid back and decided that baby only needed a place to sleep, a few babygros, a car seat and my boobs! Didn't worry about anything else!

I waited till my 20 week scan for most stuff but did buy a moses basket before then and my SIL gave us some tiny nappies she had left over from her daughter just in case we needed some early. We then painted the nursery etc in the last couple of months. I was too worried to buy anything before my 20 week scan. I have my 20 weeks scan with 2nd today and haven't bought a thing yet (hoping we don't need to buy too much this time around!).

I think 16 weeks is fine! Black Friday and Boxing Day sales will save you a fortune! Use price watch apps to make sure you're getting the best deals.

Merrow · 02/11/2022 07:58

I waited quite late as I was paranoid about something going wrong and how depressing it would be to be surrounded by baby things, so I think it was around 6 months?

From a bargain perspective you'll have the January sales, so I wouldn't worry too much about black Friday.

Mommabear20 · 02/11/2022 08:06

Odd bits that I found on a good offer or marketplace I'd buy from 12 weeks. But everything else was from 20 weeks, with my first.

wishuponastar1988 · 02/11/2022 08:16

I bought some things from 12 weeks (I found a cheap Moses basket that someone I knew was selling and we wanted one for downstairs) and then clothes after I found out the sex at 16 weeks. Pram and big items we bought after that l. I had everything by the time I was about 30 weeks and then spent the last few weeks sorting and organising.

Medoca · 02/11/2022 08:31

Black Friday deals are usually a bit of a rip off, so don’t let that sway you. You also have plenty of time even once the baby arrives (a few babygrows, nappy, Moses basket is all you’ll need for a while!). Be careful of buying too much and wait to see what you’ll actually use once they’re here (you can get most things next day delivery!). I think I waited until about 24-26 weeks when the baby has more of a chance of survival - I’m not usually superstitious, just didn’t want to tempt fate!!

rosemarycait96 · 02/11/2022 09:47

Whenever you want! :) I bought a babygro after the 12 week scan (well, turned out I was actually only 11+2) to 'celebrate', and as a way of making it more real for us. I didn't buy anything else until the 20 week scan when we found out the sex.

I'm 25 weeks now and we have the pram, car seat, a baby swing/rocker, some basic clothes, a taggy blanket, hooded towel and a sleeping bag. We're just slowly picking things up week by week. We have only bought sleepsuits, basic clothes etc because people will probably buy the more impractical/fancy/cutesy clothes for us as gifts. I think once I go on maternity leave at Christmas, things will step up a gear. The only reason I'm not spending like crazy is because we've just moved house and we're broke!

Honestly just start whenever you want. It's an exciting time.

Nancy155 · 02/11/2022 10:03

I’m currently 20 weeks and have most of the smaller things, going to get a few of the bigger bits on Black Friday.
Its personal preference I think, I am an organised person and like to have everything sorted early in as you never know when baby will arrive. Also you never know how you are going to feel towards the end and I wanted to be able to relax and enjoy it.
lastly I enjoy shopping for babies things, it’s part of the excitement for me ❤️

Daisychainsx · 02/11/2022 10:56

I got my pram at around 18 weeks because it was on sale, and I didn't want to miss out, but I'm now 25 weeks and I've not bought anything else! I think I'll wait until the January sales to buy clothes etc. We've just bought a new (although very old) house and it's eating up all of our disposable income so we're gonna get all the house jobs done first before we buy baby stuff!

ChristmasJumpers · 02/11/2022 11:41

I started after my 16 week scan and it's snowballed! We now have pram, cot, wardrobe, lots of clothes (mostly basics as I think we'll get some nicer outfits as gifts). I'm hoping to hold out now until black Friday and January sales

CSR721 · 02/11/2022 11:43

I started after our 12w scan. Things could go wrong at ANY stage, even right at the end, so to me it didn't make sense not to be prepared x

Teaandcrumpets95 · 02/11/2022 11:43

Few outfits after 12 weeks, big things like pram and cot 24 weeks x

Emmamoo89 · 02/11/2022 11:44

I started buying after the 20week scan x

SummerInSun · 02/11/2022 11:49

We lost our first baby at 22 weeks (were told we would at the 20 week scan). As a result, we were too superstitious to buy anything at all during our next pregnancy (although we had ordered a car seat). DS was 5 weeks early and DH went from straight from the labour ward to Boots and John Lewis and was back within 90 minutes with bags full of everything we needed immediately. Fortunately because DS was premature we had a few days in hospital which have me time to order everything else online.

I don't recommend that strategy, but I would wait for the 20 week scan. There will be bargains in the post-Christmas sales too.

Applesandmarshmallows · 02/11/2022 11:50

A year ago but now on cycle 20 😭

Amoozbooze · 02/11/2022 12:00

I waited till after the results of the amniocentesis, so around 25 weeks then I pickedup a few second hand bits of furniture and clothes bundles. You don't really need much for the first days and you don't know how big they are going to be yet. You'll probably get some gifts and hand-me-downs from family and friends. I'm pretty laid back too!

Magn · 02/11/2022 12:06

I bought an item of clothing early to look at, and a car seat in the black Friday sales when I was maybe 20 weeks. That's the only thing that's expensive and you need to buy new, everything else expensive can be bought cheaper second hand so there's really no rush.

CakeCrumbs44 · 02/11/2022 12:11

January sales for my March baby. I wouldn't buy much before 20 weeks personally, just because then it's hanging around for ages getting in the way!

Cuppasoupmonster · 02/11/2022 12:17

I’m 17 weeks and didn’t buy anything until last week when I found out the sex. Since then I’ve bought a few sleepsuits and a couple of pramsuits from Vinted, as well as a playmat because it was half price in a sale. Will leave everything else until after the 20 week scan, although we already have a pram from DD. We bought that when I was about 26 weeks with her I think.

TheBirdintheCave · 02/11/2022 12:19

I was about 30 weeks before I felt safe enough to order anything.

CurlyNo2 · 02/11/2022 15:59

I’m 37 weeks and I still haven’t got everything!

With my first child, I bought after 20 week scan. With this baby, we didn’t start buying until around 6-7 months as I was so paranoid things would go wrong somewhere.

But… you buy when you feel comfortable 😊

lilroo87 · 02/11/2022 16:09

With my first I bought a couple of bits after the 12 week scan. Then waited until 20 weeks and started buying loads. We had everything by 30 weeks I think.
Luckily we have most stuff still as our DD is only 15 months so it's mainly just clothes as we're having a boy this time.

I like to be really prepared so just wanted to make sure I wasn't rushing around last minute getting things

InTheFutilityRoomEatingBiscuits · 02/11/2022 16:19

After the baby was born, mostly.

Had some baby grows, nappies and a baby box for sleeping before they were born. Didn’t need to buy much else until we found out what we would actually use/need.

purplemama1990 · 02/11/2022 16:34

I think I didn't start buying things until after 20 weeks, and only bought a few things at first to be honest. I was super laid back and didn't buy most things until right at the end. I don't think it's ever too early though, do whatever feels right for you!
