My sister in law did the cake thing, but either the baker was a bit shit or something had been horribly miscommunicated along the way, because the cake was green when they cut it open

The only interesting bit of the day was her bellowing 'stop filming' at all the people who 30 seconds earlier had been asked (instructed) to film the moment of the reveal
It would have made for a hilarious TikTok if people were a bit meaner...

Incredible

Something completely unique, like fireworks but not fireworks? Hmm...How about:

  • Improvised explosive device. Get a robot to walk across the minefield and when the IED (and robot) explode, either pink or blue smoke erupts from the explosion.
  • Live cow milking. Feed the cow blue or pink food colouring and then invite family and friends to squeeze their udders until either blue or pink milk starts squirting into the bucket.
  • Vaginal ping-pong. Someone (unseen by you) inserts either pink or blue ping-pong balls into your vagina. You face your family and friends and fire the ping-pong balls out, revealing your baby's sex. Bonus: exercise for your pelvic floor muscles. Can never do too many of them!
  • Plant-based reveal. Choose a rhododendron, hydrangea, or other plant whose blooms are a different colour depending on the pH level of your soil. Determine an area of soil where the pH level corresponds to the anticipated sex of your foetus. Plant the plant and invite your family and friends to come and watch and wait until the flowers bloom either pink or blue. Make sure you don't plant in an ambivalent area and get purple flowers!
  • Chemical reveal. Choose an element from the periodic table which will burn with either a pink or blue flame. Acquire a large quantity of this element and set it on fire.

😂😂

There's this amazing idea that you don't tell anybody unless they ask. Because if someone doesn't ask they probably don't care.

SkiingIsHeaven · 27/10/2022 00:12

@BloodAndFire the ping pong idea is just the best.

Now I would go to a sex reveal party if they did that.

mcduffy · 27/10/2022 00:13

I've been on MN for over 6 years and @BloodAndFire's post is my top post so far. Must've been several thousand in competition Grin

@BloodAndFire This has to be my favourite ever mumsnet comment 😂😂😂

AlternativelyWired · 27/10/2022 00:17

It's sex, not gender. And no, no one gives a shit and it's as tacky as hell. Plus sonographers can get it wrong. Imagine if you went all out sexist stereotypical blue or pink and once the baby arrived it was the opposite sex to what you'd been told. I don't get the obsession with finding out because for a start it could be wrong but mainly all the pink or blue because of sexist stereotypes about what a boy or girl should wear. If you're talking gender there's over 70 of those and the whole concept is bollocks fluid and can change on a whim so it's impossible to stereotype with a colour scheme. Ugh, bloody tacky consumerism. Congratulations on your pregnancy.

Annemm · 27/10/2022 00:18

I hope you realise that this gender reveal ceremonies are just another marketing ploy from overseas to part you from your money on very superfluous things that will not even benefit your own baby. Save the money for things that really matter. Don’t worry, there will be plenty of occasions to spend your money on balloons and cakes and party bags (for the friends) when your little one gets to celebrate his/her birthday. Enjoy the peace and quiet while you can 😉

RandomCatGenerator · 27/10/2022 00:31

I’m pretty sure from the fact OP hasn’t been back and that mumsnet vehemently hates gender reveals…that this may not be an entirely genuine post…

TwoRockSalmonAndAHaporthOfChips · 27/10/2022 00:32

Imagine feeling that the most important thing to tell people about your child is what genitals they have.

Oh yes, the OP was clearly a troll, but a lot of people who’ve joined it could do with hearing the response, really.

MrsEricBana · 27/10/2022 00:42

...and don't even mention....whispers...baby showers.

Cleopatra67 · 27/10/2022 00:47

@BloodAndFire - bloody marvellous! I think the ping pong idea is the best.

BaronessBomburst · 27/10/2022 00:53

@dawnfromgavinandstacey yes, unfortunately it is.
That's why it's so important to differentiate correctly between sex and gender. Your sex is either male or female and can't be changed. Gender is a heap of stereotypes and ideologies which change according to class, culture, background, race, religion, period in history etcetera. Gender is responsible for all the girls must be kind, like pink and shopping, but can't park giggle, giggle bollocks.

Waveacrossabay · 27/10/2022 01:02

@BloodAndFire that's spectacular

OdkinsBodkins · 27/10/2022 02:19

Be different and don't have it at all. It's all getting very naff and OTT in my opinion and cannons and balloon arches are very wasteful of resources and environmentally unfriendly.

Just my opinion, feel free to ignore. And if you want fireworks have fireworks.

OzziePopPop · 27/10/2022 02:46

RandomCatGenerator · 27/10/2022 00:02

This seems intensely weird to me. You have your family pictures of your baby’s sort of proto penis?

AIBU to think that’s really odd?

That was my thought! Incredibly odd to send scan photos of your child’s genitalia to family ( or anyone!)

sanityisamyth · 27/10/2022 02:56

Speedweed · 26/10/2022 10:34

It's not gender, it's a sex reveal.

Agree with pp, sex reveal parties are tacky.

This. And no-one cares, except the parents.

sanityisamyth · 27/10/2022 02:59

@BloodAndFire that is fucking awesome!! 👏🤣👏🤣👏🤣

inappropriateraspberry · 27/10/2022 03:14

My friends and family couldn't wait to find out the sex of the baby - when it was born! Why does anyone need to know beforehand? You can't change it!
If you have to let them know, just tell them. Maybe give the grandparents a nice card, but please, don't do a 'reveal' no one is that interested.
OR you could dye the water system pink or blue, then ask everyone to turn on their taps at home at the same time!
Plus, these reveals just push the pink and blue stereotypes, you'll get enough of that when they're born.

Ivyonafence · 27/10/2022 03:41

Fireworks are dangerous tacky and wasteful.

But have a cake and a little party of whatever if it makes you happy.

I used to think these were stupid (maybe I still do) but after three years of pandemic life I think any excuse to get together and celebrate has value. Celebrate stupid stuff if it makes you happy.

Everyone has missed out on enough fun.

Watchthesunrise · 27/10/2022 03:47

This is mean and I can't take credit for it but

Gender reveals are really just IQ reveals🙃
Grawlix · 27/10/2022 03:56

I woke up with insomnia and was trawling MN when I stumbled across the suggestions by @BloodAndFire. Now I can’t stop laughing helplessly and I’ll never get back to sleep.

OoooSweetChildOMine · 27/10/2022 04:23

It's sex not gender.

Joshanddonna · 27/10/2022 04:45

WhatsApp message. That’s what I did with mine.
