Progesterone suppositories - tell me your tricks and tips?

Hi, I've just had a BFP at 11dpo yesterday and after 3 losses I've now started on progesterone twice a day (cyclogest). I have used vaginally so far, but it's messy - as everyone seems to say!! I am wondering if it's completely the same effect if done rectally I.e. does it absorb in the same way for preventing miscarriage?

Also any other tips for using it would be much appreciated x

Congratulations! I found out last week o was pregnant again after 3 losses also. I'm taking progesterone and I find it much easier rectally. No mess at all although I do get stomach cramps this way and need to go to the loo more. But I much prefer it. I've heard the absorption is the same

gonewithtthewind · 01/08/2022 08:48

I've been on progesterone since 6 weeks and I'm now 12! I did start with them vaginally but they're SO messy and they did eventually start to irritate my cervix which caused brown spotting (very scary as you can imagine) I started them rectally after that and it's so so much better. Like definitely do them that way if you can! I don't feel like I had any side effects from them either way, other than the irritated cervix!

Congratulations on your pregnancy!

StaceyW87 · 01/08/2022 09:24

Definitely rectally, it absorbs into the blood stream either way so it's fine 🙂 x

Cdoc · 02/08/2022 12:07

I tried both ways, and I’ve stuck with vaginally (though I do wear a liner every day now for the mess). The only reason I did is that rectally made my toilet habits a bit painful - like I had eaten a plateful of spicy chillis!

Skylark1990 · 02/08/2022 13:40

Thank you all! I have done mostly vaginally for now but will maybe alternate a bit. I just worried maybe it wouldn't get right into the uterus if not right by the cervix... but sounds like I dont need to worry about this?

I've found I'm extremely hungry since starting them and also have quite runny no.2s... sorry for the TMI! Anyone else had these symptoms? Also have had a bit of cramping.

Congratulations @chasingtherainbow1 I think i remember you from another thread.... did you take doxy recently??

@Cdoc also feel I remember you? ... how far along are you? Congrats :)

@gonewithtthewind that's great you are 12 weeks! Yay!

chasingtherainbow1 · 02/08/2022 13:45

@Skylark1990 yea I took doxy so hoping that and progesterone will help me continue this pregnancy. I have found my bowel movements have been a lot more loose than normal too. I think it's just a side effect. I've also been getting extreme hunger as well. Great excuse to eat loads!

Fingers crossed this is our time 🤞

Babyghirl · 02/08/2022 14:45

@Skylark1990
After 4 miscarriages, I took them from a bfp up until 16 weeks went back end to no problem less messy, it help me with my toileting aswell, they do the same what ever way u put them in, say on my pack to put them in either way to x

Cdoc · 02/08/2022 17:37

@Skylark1990 I remember you too, congratulations on your pregnancy, I know you have had a really awful time in the past so sending you lots of positive thoughts 🤍

I will be 9 weeks on Thursday! Have booked an early reassurance scan on Saturday as I can’t wait to 12 weeks, if something is wrong like last time I would rather know.

I’ve also had looser bowels and extreme hunger on them, I’m taking it as a good sign! Hope you’re feeling okay, the anxiety is uncontrollable sometimes but biggest fingers crossed for you 🤞🏼

Skylark1990 · 03/08/2022 10:15

Thank you so much all 🌈💗

@Cdoc best of luck for your scan xxx

@Skylark1990 thank you 🤍if it doesn’t cause anyone too much anxiety I’ll let you know how it goes 😊

Yes, please do! 💜💜💜@Cdoc

I’m taking them until at least 16 weeks, not long to go now.

I’ve tried both rectally and vaginally. For similar reasons above, I found rectally didn’t work for me.

I was told to lay down for 20 minutes, but if it falls out within an hour insert a new one. So I lay down for an hour to be sure. After a shower most of the remaining wax is dealt with, but I do wear protection if I’m going out.

PMAmostofthetime · 04/08/2022 18:16

@Skylark1990- Congratulations on the BFP!

I had IVF so have been using these for week Vaginally push up and backwards and lie down on your back for at least 20 mins- I also use always ultra thin pantyliners. I couldn't use them rectally made me sore and even more constipated. If you do use them rectally you can't have a bowel movement for an hour.

I now only do rectally if I'm out and can't lie down.

Skylark1990 · 04/08/2022 18:29

Thank you @PMAmostofthetime and @SQLserved I weirdly feel like they "work better" when done vaginally but I feel this is also certainly just some kind of psychosomatic thing. I've done both ways now, I find rectally good in morning if like you say I can't lie down for ages.

Do you all try to do approx 12 hours apart? I find if I put one in at bedtime (about 10pm most nights) then I have to do it around 9/10am next morning, so harder to lie down. I work from home alot so that helps. But just wondering what others do? X

Also thank you @Babyghirl ! Congratulations on your pregnancy. Think I also remember you from another thread xx

@chasingtherainbow1 @Cdoc are you on any due on April threads? If you are indeed due April! I was thinking of making one for being pregnant after MC. I rejoined the last one I was in that was due Feb/march after MC as April isn't much later and the girls are all so lovely in it 🥰

@Skylark1990 I do 7:30 am and Pm-
I get ready for work then do it and lie down until I leave the house.

Then in the evening I do 7:30 and lie down again- sometimes upstairs sometimes downstairs.

I am 5 weeks pregnant so will hopefully 🤞🏼have another 7 weeks of pessaries so I do rectally if I'm out in the evening but like you I prefer to do vaginally for the same reasons so I try to only do it twice a week.

X

@Skylark1990 I've not joined any yet. I know it seems silly but I feel like because I joined them with my other miscarriages it feels like a jinx. I know how crazy that sounds! 🙈 I just as thinking of waiting until after a scan. I have spoken in the Navigating Pregnancy After Loss thread but the girls in there are quite a bit ahead of me.

I haven’t stuck to 12 hours, sounds silly but I only realised that I should have done this a couple of weeks ago.

What I do is set my morning alarm early, then go back to bed for an hour and in the evening it’s the last thing I do before I go to bed.

I’m in the same boat and I feel the not wanting to jinx it. I told myself it would be safe to join one after my 12 week scan, but I still feel uncomfortable with the idea. So now I’m telling myself if I get to a point where I can feel the baby moving, then I will join one.

Skylark1990 · 04/08/2022 21:37

@PMAmostofthetime tha k you! I didn't realise you were early on too, we must be close in dates as I am 4+2 today. Do you have a scan booked?

@chasingtherainbow1 makes total sense! I feel sort of similar, its so hard to feel positive but also not get too hopeful etc. How many weeks are you now?

@SQLserved how many weeks are you now? X

Went for a system of up the back in the morning - no need to lie down afterwards, less messy when vertical for the day. Then vaginally at night, was lying down anyway. Meant both areas got a little
bit of a break!

PMAmostofthetime · 04/08/2022 22:03

@Skylark1990 I have a scan booked for 30th Aug- due the 23rd but we are away so I will be 8+6 at the scan.

Is yours booked? X

chasingtherainbow1 · 04/08/2022 22:35

@Skylark1990 I'm 5 and eels today but this morning I had really sore boobs and tonight my symptoms have just completely gone so I feel like it may be over already. Got a scan next week of I make it that far 😕

Skylark1990 · 05/08/2022 09:17

@Letshoptoit that's a good approach, think I'll do similar 😊

@PMAmostofthetime I have a scan. Booked 22 August when I'll be 6+5 according to when I think I ovulated... My last loss was 6+3 so will be good to get checked after that milestone. only two weeks plus a weekend to go so just hoping it comes around soon - best of luck for yours! At 8+6 you should be able to see a real little baby 🥰

@chasingtherainbow1 how are you feeling today? I'm sorry you're worried, symptoms can definitely come and go so try not to feel too anxious 🤞. Weirdly have had no sore boobs this time at all despite the progesterone! I usually get sore boobs with pregnancy so I'm finding it odd. My tests are showing good progression so just hoping everything is ok and should find out at a scan in a couple weeks 🤞🤞🤞🤞💗💗💗

chasingtherainbow1 · 05/08/2022 09:32

@Skylark1990 I feel better this morning actually. My boob pain has returned. It was so bizarre because last night they just completely deflated and I could grab them without feeling any pain at all! That's usually my first sign of miscarriage. I did a clear blue weeks indicator on Wednesday which said I was 2-3 weeks and this morning it says 3+ which has also made me feel a better too.

I guess like you said, each pregnancy is different and so symptoms will be different too. I'm glad to hear your tests are progressing 💕 how many weeks are you? Fingers crossed for our scans 🤞🤞
