I'm just over 9 weeks pregnant and woken up with brown spotting. I've got very mild backache and abdominal cramps (comes and goes) but I'm scared that yet another loss is happening. I've had bad morning sickness throughout which stopped on Monday. I had a scan at 7 weeks and a strong heartbeat was found. I'm home with DD today as it's half term and DH is at work so I couldn't even go to the EPU if I wanted to but I don't see the point as I have a 10 week scan booked for next Monday. I just feel so dejected that this could be happening again. I am using progesterone pessaries vaginally twice a day so I don't know if that could be causing it?

I had a MC in 2019 and a MMC last February with twins. With the twins I had an early scan at just over 6 weeks and heartbeats were found but at my 13 week scan I was told they'd both stopped growing at 10 weeks. It was a complete shock as I'd had all the pregnancy symptoms, didn't have any bleeding or spotting, etc. the real kicker is that today is a year to the day I had a D&C to have them removed. ☹️ I also had a chemical pregnancy in October.

I think I'm just looking for a hand hold really. DD has a friend coming round later for a play date so I'm just going to have to pretend I'm fine. DD is only 5 so she doesn't understand why mummy is feeling sad today. I was feeling a little low that today is a year since I had the D&C, which was a traumatic experience as I was alone because of covid so DH couldn't come with me, the surgeon was awful to me due to anxiety that I had regarding inserting a pessary to start the bleeding. Before I went to theatre I wasn't on a pre op ward but on a bed in an office with no buzzer. I was left for two hours terrified and because there were no post op beds available I actually came round on the operating table in theatre, and not the recovery ward.
To wake up to brown spotting today just seems like an extra kick in the teeth.

Here for a handhold. How's the bleeding? I had bleeding in both my successful pregnancies, so there is room to be optimistic still.

No red bleeding? Pain? Anything that could have caused a bit of a bleed? Sex etc?

SoOverThisCrap · 24/02/2022 09:09

Thank you @ohthejoysoftoddler
I've not been to the loo since as I've just in my pessary so I can't do a wee straight away. No red bleeding when I went to the loo earlier but my MC in 2019 and chemical last year started as brown spotting... nope, no sex as I'm quite swollen inside (tmi) due to the pessaries which I think is increasing blood flow down there (as in making it swollen) plus I was trying to avoid sex until I'd had my 12 week scan...

Good luck, after many MC I know how terrifying it all can be - brown blood is old blood, it could be due to the inflammation, or implantation bleeding. The placenta is forming and throws vili into the uterine wall, so it could be lots of things. Only a few days til your scan but TBH you could go today abs just take your child if you can be seen, for reassurance
Best sticky thoughts

SoOverThisCrap · 24/02/2022 09:21

Thank you @custardbear
I could go to the EPU today but DD doesn't know I'm pregnant and if it's bad news I can't put her through that of seeing me upset. Also, my hospital have a strict no child policy for scans...
I'm just praying it is old blood, that it's the placenta taking over, etc.
I have had the tiniest amount of brown stringy blood off and on for the past couple of weeks which made me think it was the pessaries so I wasn't too worried but because when I wiped today it wasn't just stringy that's what's got me worried, as well as the loss of morning sickness, but I know that can happen when the placenta starts to take over...

Have you called the hospital for advice? I had three miscarriages, but I'm now in second trimester, had progesterone this time same as you. I was told that the progesterone itself can cause a bit of spotting of old blood as it can irritate the vagina and cervix.

Isonthecase · 24/02/2022 09:31

There are quite a few people on the August and September pregnancy boards who have been having spotting and got good news, it's definitely possible although unfortunately not guaranteed. Sending hugs, the uncertainty is awful enough without your previous experiences.

SoOverThisCrap · 24/02/2022 09:39

@showmethegin yep, I've tried calling them a number of times and it just rings until I get cut off 😕 I'm just hoping it is vaginal/cervix irritation.

@Isonthecase yeah I've seen those posts as well which I've been reading to find positive stories!

Hi OP. Sorry that you’re going through this. I would give your EPU a call and see if they will scan you. Have you got anybody to look after DD for you?
I’ve had spotting and bright red bleeding throughout this pregnancy, I’m 9+4 weeks and all still ok but it’s been very scary because I never had this with my DS. Spotting and cramping can be very normal but it’s worth getting checked if you can Flowers

SoOverThisCrap · 24/02/2022 09:47

Thank you @Moonshine160 I keep trying to call EPU and no one is picking up ☹️ my MIL may be able to look after DD....

Thinking of you lovely.
I had bleeding at 6 weeks, intermittently until 8 weeks with no obvious source and all of my symptoms went at 7 +3 weeks so went back to EPU at 8+1 and everything was fine. Currently 30 weeks pregnant.
Obviously as you know it may go either way but it's not always the case. I was told the placenta may start taking over at different times for different women, so I may have just been earlier.
Thinking of you

Iv bled on and off with my last baby and have this time I’m almost 8 weeks now. Iv thankfully never had a miscarriage. I was told I had a hematoma I think they called it like basically a little collection of blood in the womb like a blood clot and it can come away as spotting or bleeding or it can be absorbed like a bruise would be. As you also say it could be the pessarys. I’d deffo try to get seen today to put your mind at rest. Could you perhaps take dd and take an iPad to keep her amused and quiet while the scan takes place? I started bleeding once at 20week a and had to go immediately into MAU and they had to check I wasn’t loosing my baby by doing an internal and I had my 5 year old with me, they just sat him on a chair at the top of the bed and gave him a toy so he couldn’t see what was going on down the bottom of the bed. All was well but sometimes things happen and people end up In hospital with their children in tow and it can be dealt with it’s not the end of the world.
I hope you have got through to them and get an app, had the bleeding settled?

SoOverThisCrap · 24/02/2022 10:10

Thank you @Nursey94 and @Nikki037297
I've tried calling them 19 times in the last half hour and no one is picking up! It's so frustrating.
I don't drive and live the opposite side to where the hospital is so if I do get through then it would be better for my MIL to have DD rather than take a taxi there with DD.

Since my first wee of the morning I've not had any more spotting. A tiny amount of stringy brown, like I've had off and on the past couple of weeks but that's it, but my lower abdomen does feel a tiny bit crampy but nothing major. I am also feeling nauseous but that could be anxiety.

Been where you are. There is every chance it's just the pessaries. Try not to worry

HeyDuggeesFavouriteSquirrel · 24/02/2022 10:17

A handhold Flowers as I am seven weeks pregnant and been experiencing spotting for the last few days. A scan on Friday shows the baby was in the right place but that it was too early to see anything else. I have another scan on Tuesday.

LASandOtto · 24/02/2022 10:31

@SoOverThisCrap really sorry for your losses, so hard to go through.

I want to provide some reassurance, I had 2 miscarriages (also both started with brown spotting) in 2019, followed by a successful pregnancy in 2020 (was on a cocktail of medication then including progesterone which caused brown spotting at times from irritation).

I'm currently 10 weeks and went to the EPU last week due to brown spotting. Was expecting the worst but saw baby on scan and seemed all fine. They put me back on progesterone pessaries and I've had brown discharge almost daily as I think they do cause irritation for some. Coincidentally the brown discharge is after I insert the pessaries and normally goes away during the day, and comes back at night once I put the evening pessary in.

The best and only reassurance is a scan. Why don't you cancel today's play date and see if you can arrange some childcare if at all possible and get the reassurance and answers you need. Otherwise you'll be worried all day and on tenterhooks, which is horrible, I know.

Wishing you all the best and please update us soon!

SoOverThisCrap · 24/02/2022 10:34

So I finally managed to get through and I have a scan booked for 11.20. I've cancelled the play date and MIL in on her way now to pick up DD and drop me off at the hospital.

SoOverThisCrap · 24/02/2022 11:41

Thank you so much to everyone for getting me through this morning. I've had the scan and measuring 10 weeks 1 day, strong heartbeat and placenta has formed. There is a small bleed at the top of the uterus but they said it can happen in the first trimester and they're not concerned. I was a bag of nerves and anxiety but I'm so relieved and grateful for all the hand holding today. I've been advised to still keep my appointment on Monday as well.
