Clear blue 3+ but nothing on abdominal scan?

My clear blue test has went up from 2-3 last week to 3+ this week but a private scan last night showed nothing? I don't know if this is because it wasn't an internal scan it was an abdominal one. Is this normal?

Going from your LMP how far along should you be? Clear blue 3+ means you are at least 5 weeks pregnant. At this stage you would be able to see a gestational sac and possibly a yolk sac but no fetal pole until around 6 weeks where this time a heartbeat could possibly be detected. It may be that they couldn't see the gestational sac due to it being abdominal, most scans at this stage are done internally. Can you possibly have another scan when your around 7 weeks? Usually you need a hcg level of at least 1000 to be able to see anything and typically you first see a baby via a trans vaginal scan. The earliest it’s realistic is 6 weeks but most places won’t scan until 7 weeks because any earlier isn’t guaranteed and can cause concern.

I’m surprised somewhere agreed to scan you at five weeks and only abdominally. If you were honest about your dates and they charged you, then complain because they will have knowingly taken you money without being able to show you a baby. Usually at five weeks you’ll only get a scan that is transvaginal and it will be to attempt to rule out an ectopic pregnancy but even then seeing anything isn’t guaranteed.

@TheSnowyOwl i was truthful about my dates completely, my last period was 3rd of December but I have pcos with no regular period so the only thing I can do is guess, I have to phone early pregnancy on Monday for a tranvaginal scan, the women said my endometriol was 19mm which is a good sign for early pregnancy, she said usually she wouldn't tell me to phone but she is as I am going on holiday on Thursday

Very surprised at them doing it abdominally at that stage.
You need an internal one to see anything this early.

Did you tell her you had just got a 3+ on a Clearblue though or did you say your LMP was 3rd December and leave her to assume you were much further along? I can’t believe any scanning reputable company would be offering abdominal only scans for someone who was expected to be five weeks’ pregnant.

Also EPU might not see you because there is no valid reason to do so.

If your LMP was the 3rd Dec then on dates you’re now over 8 weeks’ pregnant so I’m guessing that’s why they would scan you - but if your cycles are irregular then unless you know when you ovulated it’s hard to say whether it’s something to be concerned about or not.

@TheSnowyOwl I told her both, I told her my last proper period was 21/10 and on 3rd of December I had spotting which lasted a few days, she knew that I had 2-3 on clear blue and was also aware my period is so irregular it was impossible for me to know how far on I was and if they don't see me then they don't see me I'm only going with what she has told me

@GivenchyDahhling I know that's exactly why she scanned me, basically my last period in December was spotting, I don't think I could even have classed as a proper period so basically she was saying I could be anywhere from 11 weeks which i absolutely knew I wasn't or like 4/5 weeks like clear blue said, just all really confusing and worrying. She said that there was a bit she kept going over that she thought could possibly be a sac but couldn't say for sure x

If it only went to 3+ this week then it’s most likely that you are only 5-6 weeks, which is a good thing because it means your scan was just too early. I wouldn’t go back to the private scan company you used though, irresponsible of them to scan you knowing you were most likely 5 weeks, they were happy to chance it just to take your money basically.

If you're only five weeks, it's hugely unlikely you'd be able to see anything at all abdominally. So I wouldn't panic yet.

If you're at 11 weeks then that would be concerning.

I'm surprised they scanned you abdominally. Did they not offer a transvaginal one then and there? Did they have the equipment? At 5 weeks I'd have either expected them to go internally from the get go, or if they didn't have that equipment to turn you away and ask you to come back later.

It's impossible to tell with your irregularity - as we don't know at all how far along you are and there's enormous differences from week to week early on.

Hi @ljm1x I was trying to find the other thread we were speaking on to see if you'd had your scan but because I haven't checked the threads for a day, I lost it lol!

It may be just too early. I just wanted to say that as you know I'm in exactly the same position as you. Pcos and last period being 12 November so not a clue how far I was. I had an abdominal scan at only 5 weeks one day. I had told them when lmp was but I didn't think for a minute I was 10 weeks along. They still did an abdominal scan. I was 5w 1d and all they could see is the sac. I also got offered a free scan for in 2 weeks time but it's going to be such a long wait! I'm trying to stay positive at the moment and that it was just too early to see anything.

@OnceUponAThread I know your so right, u know I kinda knew going in there that I probably wouldn't see anything but was so worked up when I never. They don't have the facilities to do internal scans there, I had like explained the situation, it says on their website they would only scan 8 weeks since your last period, which it was but having such irregular periods I had no other way of telling how far I was. Hi @Jenna240 glad you managed to find me again lol! So when she was doing my scan, she said I keep going back to this one bit and on the screen it was just like a wee black circle and she said I have a feeling that is where the sac is going to be but I can't be 100% sure. She didn't seem concerned at all about an ectopic pregnancy, she said the only reason she is referring me to early pregnancy is because I'm going on holiday on Thursday so really like a precaution so I'm actually not sure if they will see me or not. But today I took another clear blue digital, was trying to stay away from them but couldn't help myself, and it's went from 2-3 on Sunday to 3+ now so hopefully it was just that it was too early to see anything on abdominal scan xxx

I have another scan on Friday to check for heartbeat etc but I've now wound myself up because I don't have a lot of symptoms that I'm not going to see one. Endless worrying in pregnancy I think lol, how are you keeping ? X

I'm OK thank you, I also have a scan of Friday where I should be 8w2d. I think the whole first 12 weeks is one big worry. I also don't have many symptoms, I'm just tired more and a little more hungrier on a morning.

How far along are you now? X

Today im 7 weeks and 3 days I think roughly, so should be round about 7 weeks and 6 on Friday im hoping although with my very irregular periods I don't actually really know xx

I had scans at 5+4, 8 weeks and 10 weeks.

The scan at 5+4 showed a gestational sac and yolk sac, but no heartbeat. I got 3+ on a Clearblue digital several days beforehand.

My doctor didn't even attempt to do an abdominal scan until I was 10 weeks.

Do you track your ovulation at all?

@babyjellyfish no I didn't track ovulation, I have pcos and very irregular periods sometimes up to 70+ days. I have since been for an internal scan and they seen a gestational sac and a yolk sac so I assume I was just very early on. I am back again today this afternoon for another scan so hoping to see heartbeat 🤞xx

When you have your dating scan they should be able to tell you how far along you are.

But I'd guess about 5 weeks.
