Don’t know when to book an early reassurance scan

Hi all me again, I want to book an early reassurance scan, there’s two places I can go, one that does them from 6 weeks and one that does them from 8 weeks, only problem is I don’t know what date to book it for as I got pregnant straight after a miscarriage without a period so I don’t really know exactly when I conceived, my miscarriage started June 3rd, stopped bleeding June 10th and levels went under 5 on June 15th, so I just track going by the first day I started bleeding during my miscarriage? Any help/advice would be much appreciated, also do you recommend an early reassurance scan? Reason I want to get one is because last time they couldn’t see anything in my uterus but I’m nearly sure it was because I passed the baby before I went into hospital for scans

Hi, sorry you’re going through this. If you can, I would try and wait until you think you’re about 7 weeks. That way if you’re a week off, and you’re actually only 6 weeks, you still have a chance of seeing something on the scan.

I had a scan at 6w+5 (because of anxiety following a MC) and it was the best decision I made as it put my mind at ease (for a few days at least…!).

If you have a scan at 6 weeks you just need to be prepared not to see a heart beat as this isn’t guaranteed this early.

Ruby2328 · 11/07/2021 21:42

@Tartanblanket1000 thank you so so much! The anxiety after a miscarriage is real! Really just want to see if the baby is in the right place x

Yeah waiting as long as possible will be best. I went for one at 6 and a half weeks and was lucky there was a heartbeat but I know of people who have done the same and ended up having to wait a whole week to go back (where they did see a heartbeat) but what a horribly long week waiting. So much stress, especially after a previous loss. Good luck x

I would get advice from the doctor or ultrasonographer if you can, I'm not sure you can count from the first day of bleeding if it's a MC related bleed? And if you are actually a few weeks earlier than you think you could could really cause yourself more severe panic/anguish, potentially for a few weeks, by going too early. Maybe aiming for when you think you're about 8 weeks is better? I'm sorry, it's so hard! But all the best with this pregnancy.

BabyC21 · 12/07/2021 06:27

Sorry to hear about your previous loss but congratulations on your pregnancy.
I would suggest waiting 3 weeks from when you got your positive pregnancy test, that way you will be sure to be 6-7 weeks pregnant at the time.

Cancellingadvice · 12/07/2021 06:32

When did you first get a positive test and how faint was it? I would be tempted to go for 6 weeks from there

Heathrug · 12/07/2021 06:48

I think they heart starts beating between 6-7 weeks and that’s really what you want to see so if you go too early into the 6 week you could miss it which would be disappointing and not much reassurance. After the heart beat is seen I’m sure it’ll help you relax.

becca3210 · 12/07/2021 06:52

Book for later if you can wait as if you don't see anything you won't feel reassured and possibly worse

Twizbe · 12/07/2021 06:53

Speak to your GP / midwife. As you or pregnant after a miscarriage with no period between they might do an early scan anyway. It will likely be around 9/10 weeks by dates and close to your midwife appointment.

I'm sorry for your loss but I wouldn't pay for a reassurance scan. Especially if you're not sure of your dates.

It will either only put your mind at rest for a moment (as anything can happen and a scan at 6,7,8 weeks can't change that)

Or you won't be as far along as you think and it will just cause you more worry.

SunnySideUp2020 · 12/07/2021 07:01

Agree with @Cancellingadvice
5/6 weeks from when you had your first positive test!
That way you can see everything and actually be reassured.
Good luck!

thebookworm1 · 12/07/2021 11:00

Booking too early can cause unnecessary worry so I’d try to aim for 8/9 weeks rather than 7 :) we had ours at 8 weeks and it was a lovely experience.

Kdubs1981 · 12/07/2021 11:23

I've been through two missed miscarriages and for this reason I am in favour of early scans. BUT. I would not book one earlier than 8 weeks, as you may not find anything much before then and it can cause Unnecessary worry. I would strongly advise against 6/7 weeks from bitter experience. Also, make sure you book it at a clinic that are able to do internal scans as well as external scans, as sometimes so early an internal is required and if they are unable to perform this, again unnecessary worry.

Good luck OP!!

Blown away with all the replies! Thanks so much everyone I’m going to get through them now! Xxx

OP posts:
Ruby2328 · 12/07/2021 17:34

@sarah13xx yeah I think I’ll wait until the 8 week mark just to make sure the baby is in the right place, and that way I won’t have to wait that long for the 12 week scan, thanks so much for your reply xxx

OP posts:
Ruby2328 · 12/07/2021 17:36

@Alfxn yeah once I go to the doctors I’ll get a better understanding of when to track it by, think I’ll wait until the 8 weeks to go as I feel like I’ll panic at 6 weeks if there’s no heartbeat or anything! X

OP posts:
Ruby2328 · 12/07/2021 17:38

@BabyC21 yeah I think I’ll wait a little longer before I book anything, just so nervous from the previous loss that I feel like I’m freaking out abit haha thank you xx

@Cancellingadvice I got my first very very faint positive on the 5th of this month and this is what it’s like now

Don’t know when to book an early reassurance scan
OP posts:
Ruby2328 · 12/07/2021 17:43

@Heathrug yeah I think I’ll wait until I think I’m around 8 weeks, just praying we have no scares before then 😭

OP posts:
Ruby2328 · 12/07/2021 17:43

@becca3210 yeah I’d say it will probably be better at 8 weeks, think I’m just panicked a bit because of what happened last time 😭

Ell17 · 12/07/2021 17:47

Congratulations ♥️♥️ I too had a miscarriage in April and I've fallen again this cycle. I wasn't tracking so it's a bit of a guess for me too, but I've booked an early scan for 23rd July where I think I'll be 6wk5d 🙏 so nerve wracking isn't it!! I totally feel what you're going through. Good luck!!

Ruby2328 · 12/07/2021 17:48

@Twizbe yeah I think I might give the hospital a call and see what their opinion is, just want to make sure the baby is in the right place as last time they said they couldn’t see anything where it was suppose to be :(

OP posts:
Ruby2328 · 12/07/2021 17:49

@SunnySideUp2020 yeah I feel like atleast then I’ll know for sure I’m atleast 6 weeks!

OP posts:
Ruby2328 · 12/07/2021 17:50

@thebookworm1 Awh I’m so happy you had a great experience at 8 weeks! Did you have a miscarriage before that if you don’t mind me asking? My nerves are gone this time round, do you have any pictures of your 8 week scan? X

OP posts:
Ruby2328 · 12/07/2021 17:52

@Kdubs1981 thanks so much I’ll wait until the 8 weeks so I’m not worried if I don’t hear anything, I can’t seem to find a clinic that does internal scans, only abdominal at 6/8 weeks, the hospital do the internal ones but I don’t know if they’ll give me an early one 🤔

OP posts:
Ruby2328 · 12/07/2021 17:54
