Will sonographer guess sex at 12 week scan?

Excuse my spelling! I've got my 12 weeks scan this afternoon and after trawling through all the treads guessing the sex from scan pictures im just wandering if they will tell you what they think it might be or if they'll refuse to say! Not a problem either way I'm just desperate to know!

Thanks!

No. They won't.

If you want to find out, there's the harmony blood test that you can do privately.

Otherwise they may (or may not) be able to tell you at the 20 weeks scan.

Charlieiscool · 16/03/2021 08:54

Sonographers don’t go in for making guesses.

NameChange74567 · 16/03/2021 08:55

At the hospital I have had all my scans at for 3dc, they don't tell you the sex at any scan. There are signs on the wall in the waiting room telling you not to ask. It will depend on the hospital's policy but I doubt they would guess at 12 weeks.

SnooperTrooper12345 · 16/03/2021 08:56

Nope. Never known them to do it at 12 weeks as the earliest you can usually tell decent enough is around 16 weeks

jellydot · 16/03/2021 08:57

Ok thanks everyone that's what I thought! Guess I'll have to leave it up to the Mumsnet experts when I get the photo!

@NameChange74567 why did they refuse to tell you the sex at any scan? I have never heard of that before

It’s usually the 20 week scan where the sonographer can tell you the baby’s sex. Although they can’t always get a clear enough view to tell & not all hospital trusts will tell you anyway.

I think private scans can usually show sex from around 16 weeks?

SoCrimeaRiver · 16/03/2021 09:04

The hospitals which refuse to divulge the sex of the foetus tend to have communities who would strongly prefer one sex over the other.

Oodilallygolly · 16/03/2021 10:18

They won’t say at 12. Even if they could, it’s quite early anyway so you’d probably be second guessing it regardless because they look very very similar at that point.
Lots of hospitals will say at 20 but in some trusts they don’t

Chelyanne · 16/03/2021 10:26

My experience has been that they will not at the dating scan as it'd just be a guess really. They often will at the anomaly scan but not all will and they do say it's not 100%.

eensyweensySpider · 16/03/2021 10:26

No guessing here either, to be fair; I was just glad everything was well at 12 weeks, I didn't even ask them. I did pay for a private gender scan at 16 weeks a I was too impatient 😬

HermioneMakepeace · 16/03/2021 10:29

Not true. In fact, 12 weeks is the best time as they can tell by the nub and skull shape.

Whether they’ll tell you or not is another matter.

Wavescrashingonthebeach · 16/03/2021 10:33

You cant tell at 12 weeks.
I got a private scan at 16 weeks. Didnt do a gender reveal just wanted to know for myself so i could say he/she but i still kept it in mind they can get it wrong. It was pretty obvious with mine though once he got his winky out Smile.
The NHS hospital im with it says on the letter for the 20 week scan that they can tell the Mother what they believe it is at the scan but they cant write it down. I fully agree with them. Not for them to get involved if there's a cock up with whatever stupid gender reveal service someone has gone with.

NameChange74567 · 16/03/2021 10:54

I'm not really sure, I didn't ask. I got private scans at 16 weeks with all mine to find out the sex.

SugarCoatIt · 16/03/2021 12:34

Where I live they don't tell you the gender at any NHS scan.

There's a chance it could be wrong, there's a chance that if it's not the desired gender, and there's a strong preference for a certain gender that it may effect how people proceed (or not) with the pregnancy so they steer clear of it - and rightly so IMO.

Just a shame there's not consistency across the board(s).

startedearlytookmycats · 16/03/2021 12:40

I got told both times at 12 week scan. First time she was right, second time - I'll confirm on Monday! Both times they said "can't be sure but it definitely looks like a girl/boy" and then showed me what they were looking at.

WalkingMeAway · 16/03/2021 12:56

No, I don’t believe it’s something they even actively
look at that stage is it ?!

20w scan depends on your local NHS policy.

I had private sexing scans with my first 2 at about 18w.

With my third I had the Harmony test at 13+6 and it was very clear on the scan he was a boy ! Blood tests results and NHS 20w scan confirmed this.

WalkingMeAway · 16/03/2021 12:57

@HermioneMakepeace over seeing genitalia Confused

Nam095 · 16/03/2021 13:18

I had my 12 week scan at just over 13 weeks and my sonographer said looks like a girl but obviously said to wait until 20 weeks to confirm. At my 20 week scan confirmed she was a girl 🥰

jamsandwich1 · 16/03/2021 14:37

At my 12 week scan with DC2 the sonographer offered to ‘guess’ saying she was 95% sure what it was. I took this to mean a boy as I felt that would be more obvious than a girl! I didn’t want to know anyway and was so surprised when DD arrived!

jellydot · 16/03/2021 16:41

Just for fun would anyone like to guess? 13+1 so a bit further along then I thought!

I was told at my 12 week scan that she thought I was having a girl. She said it was too early to tell but she could see 2 white lines which suggested a girl.
She was right!!

Spaghettiamaretti · 16/03/2021 17:08

I had a private scan at 12 weeks as my partner couldn’t attend the nhs scan. The sonographer at the private scan guessed girl at 12 weeks and she was right. I did ask her about nub theory and she was telling me how they (as professionals) would take an educated guess at that stage. It was really interesting.

jamsandwich1 · 16/03/2021 19:11

I think it’s a boy OP!

stretchypants · 16/03/2021 19:17

My sonographer correctly guessed the sex at my 12 week scan, he said it was very clear. I’d already had a NIPT test so already knew what we were having.

SirVixofVixHall · 16/03/2021 19:20

I think a boy too OP.
