Was anybody else prescribed aspirin?

Im 19 weeks and have been taking 150mg of aspirin daily since about 12 weeks, it wasnt really explained to me why other than because my bmi is 37.5, anyway my mother in law seems concerned that 150mg is too much, i know she is probably just being overly dramatic but has anybody else been prescribed this dosage and can explain what its actually ment to do? My MW is on maternity leave so i cant ask her.

It's the standard dose now. It helps ward of certain complications such as placental issues and pre eclampsia that can be complications due to high bmi.
It's risk assessed on a case by case basis but if you've been prescribed it, you should take it.

RustyCat · 15/02/2021 08:32

I am, I have to take 150mg but I'm pregnant with twins this is why for me.

It's meant to help manage your blood pressure to stop it going/getting high and to help prevent/stop pre eclampsia in pregnancy 😊.

CoodleMoodle · 15/02/2021 08:34

I took aspirin when pregnant with DS, because I had preeclampsia with DD. Only took it for a few weeks and then was told to stop, but this was nearly 3yrs ago so advice might be different now!

SnooperTrooper12345 · 15/02/2021 08:36

Hi, yes. I had it too in my first pregnancy. Wasn't explained to me either. Was due to a high bmi. As it lowers your chances of getting Pre eclampsia.

xoxochellexoxo · 15/02/2021 08:44

Ok thats fine thanks for explaining, my booking in appt didnt go so very well the mw treated me like i was imposing on her day. When i asked at my 16 week one she just said for high bmi and i would be on it till i deliver, you can tell im a FTM lol

Unless your MIL is a medical professional I wouldn't entertain listening to her. I took it from BFP to 26 weeks last time with zero issues and using again this time.

FelicityPike · 15/02/2021 08:48

Me.
From week 5 until week 31.

MintGreenLife · 15/02/2021 09:03

@xoxochellexoxo I’m taking the same as you - 150mg from 12 weeks, because I’m high risk for pre eclampsia x

Moominmiss · 15/02/2021 09:21

I’ve been taking 150mg a day from 1dpo and will remain on it.

The initial reason for taking it was recurrent miscarriages, but my bmi is just over 30 and my blood pressure is now edging on the higher side so will hopefully help those issues too.

PurpleFlower1983 · 15/02/2021 09:35

I was told to take it from 12 week at my booking appointment by a nurse but my midwife had covid so I’d bit spoken to her. When I did see my midwife at 10 weeks she didn’t mention it so I haven’t bothered. I have another appointment tomorrow so will mention it then.

KHR1 · 15/02/2021 09:54

My last pregnancy I was told to take 75mg from 12 weeks but this time it's been upped to 150mg. I was told its due to high bmi to help with blood pressure and the risk of pre-eclampsia.

Has everyone been getting it through prescription of off the counter? Last pregnancy with the 75mg the pharmacist said it was much cheaper to just buy a box before I got my maternity exemption but this time I wasn't sure if I could just take 2 75mg or half a 300mg? Would ask my midwife but not due to see her for a few weeks

morningcuppatea · 15/02/2021 10:28

I've been on 150mg of aspirin throughout my pregnancy because of low Papp-a which can cause placenta problems. Initially the mw said to just buy some over the counter until I got a prescription and take it on an night before bed. I got 1 prescription of it from my GP but it was the ones you dissolve in water and it said to take on a morning, I couldn't stomach them though so when I ran out of those I went back to buying the 75mg tablets and taking 2 but still on a morning.

I'm not sure if I'm doing right so interested when others are taking them? What you were prescribed from GP?

Mummyof2Terrors · 15/02/2021 10:36

Yellow boxes of 75mg aspirin can be bought in home bargains, Wilko or b&m. About 80p a box. Much cheaper than the cost to the NHS to prescribe.

These are what I buy. The yellow boxes of 75mg aspirin.

They’re so cheap. Would be far more expensive to get on prescription.

xoxochellexoxo · 15/02/2021 10:46

I have mine on repeatprescription and are the dissolvable ones but my MW said these can just be swalled whole with plenty of water which iv been doing

I had to take it because my two previous babies were lower than expected birth weights but they didn't really explain it, just gave me the prescription.

RWK29 · 15/02/2021 10:49

@xoxochellexoxo Standard dose used to be 75mg daily but it’s been raised to 150mg daily due to newer research 😊
I was also on it due to higher BMI (35.2). It helps the blood flow across the placenta 😊 took it until delivery and had a healthy pregnancy and delivery 😊

mummabubs · 15/02/2021 10:50

I was prescribed it due to being higher risk for pre eclampsia (low PAPP-A levels at 12 week bloods) but I've asked to stop taking them as I only meet one of the criteria for being prescribed it (you can find this quite easily online, you get prescribed it if you meet one "high risk" criteria or two "moderate risk" criteria). You've mentioned high bmi and being a first time mum so I think this is why you'll have been prescribed it. (This is my second child so doesn't apply to me). 😊 Hope that helps and that everything goes smoothly for you OP!

xoxochellexoxo · 15/02/2021 10:55

Thankyou @mummabubs 🥰

Yes. Fanily history of preeclampsia.

Elles87 · 15/02/2021 13:41

I've been prescribed it from 12 weeks. Now 26 weeks. I was prescribed it due to previous miscarriage and a stillbirth 15 years ago, combined with the fact I had extremely high blood pressure 5 years ago which has since been resolved

MooreLew · 15/02/2021 13:44

Yes I'm on it too, 150mg ( the recommended dose has just increased from 75mg). I had preeclampsia in my first pregnancy. I've had no side effects at all from the asprin and to be honest would do anything to avoid the same issues I had first time round+

Milkand2sugarsplease · 15/02/2021 17:36

150mg here from booking and told to take it to 36 weeks. My bp went through the roof in labour last time so I'm on it to help reduce the risk of it happening again.

Waitingforbabypage · 15/02/2021 18:39

I got it prescribed because my ds2 was a 6lb10 so slightly small.

I have chosen not to take it as I don't feel like this is actually a problem.

readyforroundtwo · 15/02/2021 20:30

I'm on 150mg daily also as in my last pregnancy I had hypertension and they were worried about pre-eclampsia.

This time it's just precautionary.
