Anyone had delayed / postponed scans due to COVID?

Hi Everyone!
I am 10 weeks today and waiting with anticipation for my 12 week scan date letter. It has been a couple of weeks since my booking appointment and my midwife did say the letter could take a while which is fine and obviously expected with current situations. But I am just interested as to whether or not has experienced any delays or postponed scans due to COVID restrictions? xo

Congratulations! I have a 6 week old baby and didn't have any scans delayed or postponed. Its nit what you asked but i did have a couple of telephone midwife appointments and saw a couple of different midwifes due to the one i normally saw being off sick. I was also due to have the health visitor coming today but it ended up being over the phone due to lockdown restrictions.

PinkDaffodil2 · 07/01/2021 21:44

It’s really quite specific time frames the scans must be done in to get the information they need so I don’t think they will be postponed due to covid - unless someone is positive and can’t attend I suppose.

User415373 · 07/01/2021 21:49

No delays here. I didn't get my 12 week scan letter til 11+3 and had the scan at 12+4. I was checking the post every day 8 weeks 😂
Had 16 and 20 all normal too. I just don't think you get the appointment as in advance as you think (I thought it'd be a couple of weeks in advance).
I've also had all face to face appointments as well.

sozzledsantax · 07/01/2021 21:50

Both of my scans were at the correct weeks, although one had the day changed last minute due to covid.
Like PP said I found that some of my midwife appointments where over the phone instead of face to face.

Congratulations, and hope you hear about your scan soon!

physicskate · 07/01/2021 23:04

Mine was. I was meant to have scan at 14+1 (which is too late for the screening tests anyway) but had a fever that day. So they told me not to go. I tested negative and eventually had my scan and they put me EVEN further ahead. So I would have been 14+5 or so at the original scan anyway. Still really annoyed as they only offered me the quad test.

Thanks ladies! Funnily enough I have an upcoming telephone appointment booked in already for February so expecting a few more of those I think! Like @User415373 says, sometimes the letters aren’t released that far in advance so maybe I am just expecting the letter a little too soon! Interesting to hear of everyone’s experiences and how current circumstances are affecting you, it is a very scary time to have a baby as the world is so uncertain at the moment!

Congratulations @sunshinecitrus1!
It can be worrying to be pregnant with covid going on but I honestly haven't found it an issue at all (apart from now I'm 25 weeks I have to work from home which as a teacher I'm finding v hard! I know it's for the best though).
Everyone at all my appointments has been great and listened to any concerns I've had. I'm actually looking forward to not having too many visitors too soon, though of course hoping it'll all be over within the next year so my baby can have a normal start to life.

sarahb083 · 08/01/2021 08:41

I'm 36 weeks and covid didn't delay any of my scans or appointments, and none have had to be rescheduled. I did get some of the appt letters just a few days before the appt though.

sunshinecitrus1 · 08/01/2021 09:52

Thanks @User415373 congratulations to you too! Flowers Oh wow working from home as a teacher must be very difficult but it is the safest option which is the main thing Smile. It’s really reassuring to hear you haven’t found Covid an issue. I am hearing of lots of non urgent operations and appointments being cancelled but our scans and appointments aren’t something they can put off. I was thinking the same about visitors. It would be good when baby first arrives but hopefully doesn’t last too long so they get a good start to life!

@sarahb083 Congratulations! Flowers Thanks for the advice, that reassures me that my letter could still be coming. Maybe I am just being impatient! Smile

I tried to move mine by a week and they were very adamant that they couldn't because of the strict timelines. I've not had any of my appointments or scans affected by covid so far.

yarrow89 · 08/01/2021 10:17

I did read though that in some areas they are withdrawing home births as they didn't have the ambulance capabilities due to rising covid cases if that's something you were thinking of.

sunshinecitrus1 · 08/01/2021 11:48

@yarrow89 Glad to hear none of your appointments and scans have been affected so far Smile They have suspended home births in my local area, I saw it on my local hospitals’ website. Thankfully I wasn’t considering a home birth but you can understand their reasons why x

My obstetrics/gynaecology appointment has been delayed by three months (I’ll be nearly due by the time I have it!). I have managed to get a midwife appointment in the meantime though (I’m consultant led).

sunshinecitrus1 · 08/01/2021 12:46

@Grognonne Oh wow that is a long delay! You could expect a couple of weeks or something but months is crazy! Really glad you have managed to get a midwife appointment at the very least. All the very best with the rest of your pregnancy Flowers

I had my booking appointment at 10 weeks and my '12 week' scan at 14 weeks. My 20 week scan will be at 21 weeks and I haven't seen my midwife since the booking appointment. It's an ivf baby so it wasn't an issue with being unsure of dates! I think some areas are just a lot busier than others so it's luck of the draw really. Fingers crossed yours comes through soon!

MaryShelley1818 · 08/01/2021 13:21

I am 35wks and received scans and consultant appointments all on time. The level and standard of care has been excellent.

Sandcastles24 · 08/01/2021 16:00

If you have waited a few weeks you can always ring and check. I got a letter for a latter scan than the one i was waiting for so rang up. Turned out they had booked the other too but the postman had put it in the neighbours box.

sunshinecitrus1 · 08/01/2021 22:09

Thanks ladies! I will give it until mid-week next week and will give them a call to check Smile xo

We had our 12 week scan at 14 weeks - not because of COVID as such but she said they are just so busy as there are an incredible number of pregnant people that they can't really cope as usual (which I think is true as in my workplace we are tracking at double the number of pregnant women as normal).

sunshinecitrus1 · 09/01/2021 00:28

Thanks @Shamoo Smile At least you got your scan even if it was a little later than expected. I guess in every aspect of the hospitals at the moment they are inundated with patients. Will be great when things go back to “normal”.

My 20 week scan was late due to COVID, I was 22 weeks when scanned. I ended up having to go to a hospital an hour away rather than the maternity I am registered 5 mins away as they had NO appointments due to the amount off woman having babies in my area. Ah the COVID baby boom!

sunshinecitrus1 · 09/01/2021 10:14

Thanks @PFin Wow that is crazy you had to travel to a hospital that was an hour away! Did you have to chase up your scan date or did you just receive a letter with details to attend the hospital which was further away?

OP posts:
PFin · 09/01/2021 18:33

They have changed the way they do it here (northern ireland) during the pandemic! You used to wait for the appointment posted to you but now you ring and get given an appointment over the phone there and then and a letter is sent confirming. I rang obviously wanting my original hospital and the man booking the appointments was trying his hardest but obviously you need that scan before a certain time incase god forbid steps need taken to manage the pregnancy if something serious ie wrong. So he just apologised and said he had to send me there. I didnt have to chase up but i was on the phone for a good hour. All these babies being born im scared i go into labour now and they have no room in the labour ward for me and i have to go an hour away 🙈

sunshinecitrus1 · 09/01/2021 19:36

@PFin Exactly! You definitely don’t want the scan to be too late that’s for sure. It’s good they accommodated you in a different hospital but yeah definitely not ideal. In a way it’s probably better you can book the appointments yourself rather than waiting on a letter but at the same time you’re probably struggling to get through because everyone is trying to do the same thing! I am going to speak with my midwife next week and see what she says, she may tell me to call the hospital too. How far gone are you at the moment?

OP posts:
PFin · 09/01/2021 21:32

You should ring on monday just and follow up, your only 2 weeks away from when you should be getting the scan I would of throught you would of received the appointment by now. Yeah i like booking the appointment myself avoids a situation like yours with all the waiting not knowing whats happening. My 20 week scan was just after christmas im around 24 weeks now. Have you had any private scans or is this the first time you'll be seeing baby?
