Misdiagnosed miscarriage. Anyone suffered this?

Diagnosed MC but no symptoms?

I’m super confused right now. I am 12w and 2d.

Two weeks ago we arranged a private ultrasound for fun and saw our little bean with his heatbeat blasting away. He was difficult to find due to the position on my womb but he was definitely there. He measured slightly smaller than the date I had been given but he was definitely a baby. I then had a private gender blood screening done just after Xmas and they confirmed it was a boy.

Today I went for my routine NHS ultrasound. She spent about 2 minutes scanning my belly and said there was nothing there but an empty sac. I was then rushed to a quiet room and given my options to “speed up” the miscarriage. One nurse implored me to take the pill “right now to get it over with” or that they could book me for a d&c tomorrow morning. All this 5 minutes after being told I had miscarried.

I haven’t opted for anything yet, I’m just processing and I’ve booked a private scan again with the same provider as she was great and got me into all sorts of positions to get a look at the baby. It took a weird bent in half/sideways position to see him. My SO is devastated and confused because the foetus was definitely there and growing but now there is no sign?

I’ve had zero bleeding or pain, I look and feel more pregnant each day.

I’m not sure what I’m looking for here but has anyone experienced the same? It just doesn’t make sense to me. I would have understood if I had bled or passed something but I haven’t, I’ve checked very single time, so where has the foetus gone?! Just disappeared into thin air?!

Hi OP,
I've never experienced this, but this sounds odd. Did the sonographer at your nhs scan call somebody else to confirm? I find it very bizarre that there was an empty sac and no baby. Did they do internal scan too? I don't blame you for booking the private scan I would be confused and in shock if I were you too! Thanks

tobeornottobe1 · 04/01/2021 23:42

And just to add I have had a missed miscarriage found at 12 week scan. Sadly baby stoped growing at just over 10 weeks but you could see a fully formed foetus with no heart beat Sad I opted to wait for a natural passing and it took a week but I bled an awful lot. X

DappledOliveGroves · 04/01/2021 23:55

I had a MMC in July. We'd seen the baby at a couple of scans with a strong heartbeat, but then at the harmony scan there was a baby but with no heartbeat. But you could definitely see the foetus.

Elouera · 05/01/2021 00:02

Sorry you are going through this. Given the fact you've already had 2 scans before the NHS one (if I'm correct?), both showing heart beats anda foetus, I'm very suprised the NHS arent bringing you back in a few days for another scan! How much behind for dates was the private scan?

I know very early pregnanies can be reabsorbed, but if the scans were showing 10ish weeks, that seems unusual. Could it be possible you had twins? 1 died early, hence the sac that the NHS saw and the other pregnancy is still going, but well hidden?

Best of luck and keep us updated x

lavenderlove · 05/01/2021 00:05

How confusing for you op you must be going out of your mind worrying. Everything crossed that your baby is still there hiding somewhere

2020wish · 05/01/2021 00:10

How confusing . When is ur next private scan? Did u show the nhs midwife ur previous private scan pics?

Nat831 · 05/01/2021 00:11

Hi - so sorry to hear your sad and distressing news. Sadly this is common - your body can reabsorb the fetus, it happened to me in September. I had a positive 6 week scan - healthy heartbeat identified and lots of on going sickness etc up to 12 weeks. But then my 12 scan showed an empty sac - at some point after my 6 week scan I had a missed miscarriage and my body reabsorbed the fetus. I was in total shock too and never knew this could happen. I hope your private scan provides some more clarity for you x

TenThousandSpoons0 · 05/01/2021 00:45

Sorry you’re going through this. Agree this seems a little strange - was it an internal scan? Also seems very strange that they’re hurrying you into deciding management options - there’s absolutely no hurry on that count. For your own peace if mind definitely have another scan - and then even if it also shows an empty sac take extra time to process if you need it. Agree with PP it is possible to see an embryo and then for it to transform - but that’s more likely earlier on, would be unusual if already measuring 10 weeks. I guess there’s also a possibility the first scan got it wrong - very confusing. Best of luck.

Zrose · 05/01/2021 01:21

Hi I know sacs can be reabsorbed into the body if nothing grows in them but as you actually had a foetus I’m not sure about that. My daughter had what’s called a vanishing twin where there were two sacs but she grew in one and there was nothing in there other at my 12 week scan. Maybe you want to check you don’t have two sacs as I had had a scan before this and they hadn’t mentioned a second sac just baby. I was also advised the sac with nothing in would absorb into my body naturally, it was nothing to worry about and nothing I needed to do.

Zrose · 05/01/2021 01:22

Just for clarity my first scan as private and the second one at 12 weeks was Nhs where we discovered the second sac

Zrose · 05/01/2021 01:24

I had MMC in 2017 at 9 weeks baby was still there.

Hiya. No she didn’t get anyone else to check. She did an internal scan for all of 2 minutes and when I told her “I have spina biffida occulta so my womb is apparently at an odd angle, the previous sonographer had to put me on my side” she barely listened to me and just gave me a print out to confirm there was no foetus.

Yes I had to ask her for an internal scan after her 2 minute swipe across my tummy (I am also a bit bottom heavy so knew it might be struggle to see via my tummy this early on). She put me on my back, checked it for a minute or so then said no sorry it is the same news, there is no baby, sorry.

I was not given any option about having a blood test, waiting a week, then coming back for a scan and another blood test (this seems common from my friends/family experiences). I was given the option of pill or surgery and we can do it TODAY.

I think even if my private scan doesn’t show anything different, I will let nature do it’s thing.

It is on Wednesday morning. I showed them the scans and corresponding report. He was measuring about 2 weeks behind at that point which isn’t unexpected due to my irregular cycle it isn’t 100% clear when I conceived

One scan and one blood test for gender chromosomes. He was scanning a week or two (depending on the angle she got) behind the dates but she wasn’t concerned due to my irregular cycle

Sounds very weird, I can't believe they were pressing you to take the pill etc given the conflicting scans, unbelievable.
I'm not sure if what others have said about a foetus being aborbed by the body is true, as becuase if a baby stopped growing you would eventually have a period and the endometrium it was implanted in would come out. What pp have said about possible twins with one just a sac could be worth looking at.

SkyBlue20 · 05/01/2021 04:13

I’m so sorry you’re going through this 😔 it does sound like the sonographer rushed and I’m glad you refused immediate treatment.
I, unfortunately, had a MMC - we clearly saw baby with a strong heartbeat measuring seven weeks at a private scan and then by my 12 week scan it had gone, it was reabsorbed by my body. The only sign I had was a drop off in symptoms. So it could, sadly, be right, however it’s definitely worth getting that second opinion as baby was so hard to find at first! If the worst has happened, take heart in knowing that that baby has stayed with you - and that from a practical point of view, it physically makes the next stages a bit easier, if not emotionally.
I really really hope you get a positive outcome and will be thinking of you.

@Funneth I can absolutely assure you it is true. My sac was measuring nine weeks at the 12 week scan but baby had gone. It took six weeks to get my MVA (it was found first week of lockdown one hence the delays) during which I even had medical management and I still didn’t bleed. It probably would have happened eventually but it wouldn’t have been any time soon. Trust me, it’s true and it’s a little disheartening that you would minimise other women’s horrendous experiences so flippantly.

parsnipsnotsprouts · 05/01/2021 05:28

This does sound odd. I had a mmc at 11 weeks after seeing a heartbeat at 8 but you could still see the baby. My husband was very disbelieving and asked for a second opinion at the nhs scan. They were happy to get another sonographer to come in and check. I'm glad you didn't take the pills or d&c as you would always wonder. Get a second opinion and if it is the worst news I would say get a d&c. I had one because I couldn't bear the waiting around and it was very straightforward so at least I only had ye emotional side of the miscarriage to deal with.

Chanel05 · 05/01/2021 08:41

@Aerie2311 I'm very sorry that yours going through this. I also experienced this in 2019 when I'd seen the baby with a heartbeat and then at another scan the heart had stopped. I opted for surgical management in the end which was the best decision for me.

Parkandride · 05/01/2021 09:35

How strange, it really doesn't sound like you got the best care at your nhs scan, you must be all over the place. Definitely get a second opinion and keep advocating for yourself, fingers are crossed for you Flowers

Nat831 · 05/01/2021 09:37

It is most definitely is true that the fetus can be reabsored by the body as echoed by @SkyBlue20. My private scan at 6 weeks showed a clear fetus and heartbeat. By 12 weeks I was left with an empty sac and totally devastated. As others are saying seek some further advice and clarity - a second sonographer should have been involved so you could question this further with your early pregnancy unit. I ended up having 3 lots of Miso pill and still has retained products so eventually had to have surgery as my placenta was not budging. All very traumatic and at times my partner and I were felt rushed into making decisions. Sadly like in any profession some workers are more supportive than others. I hope you get some answers soon @Aerie2311. Sending a big hug x

LittleTiger007 · 05/01/2021 09:46

At 11 weeks I had a private scan and they said there was no baby. I had another at 14 weeks (nhs) and they couldn’t see the baby. I’m 20 weeks now and feeling the baby kick. Sometimes they are wrong and you know your own body. I really feel for you... what I’ve gone through has been hideous but I wouldn’t take the pill to kill my baby and clean everything out. I took the course of waiting. It’s been hard but i have carried on as if all is well and it now is! They destroyed my maternity notes at my nhs appointment and took me off their books. They had to eat their words when i went back with a growing, kicking belly. I’m glad I carried on... it’s hard, but wait and see. Sometimes that’s all we can do. Wait, pray. Take it a day at a time.

LittleTiger007 · 05/01/2021 09:49

I have an odd shaped womb like you. I told the woman that but she thought she knew best.

Funneth · 05/01/2021 11:40

@SkyBlue20 I am not 'minimising' anything, I simply said I wasn't sure as I have a basic understanding of how human gestation works and how it's different from other animals which can reabsorb a developing fetus. I have checked this just now and in the case of a sac becoming emplty early in a pregnancy, the fetus has actually broken back down within the sac so effectively remains there until your next period. It's a common thing to happen and very heartbreaking but it's really best that we check the scienctific facts when talking about what actually happens.

HopingForOurRainbowBaby · 05/01/2021 13:43

I had my 4th miscarriage last year at 9 weeks. Baby wasn't visible on the scan had measured 2 weeks behind at 5 weeks on the first scan I had
When I should've been 7 weeks. I knew the date we'd conceived due to a long distance relationship. I had another scan 3 weeks later and this time I was able to see something but there wasn't a heartbeat. Scanned again a week later, this time they couldn't find anything although she did say there was a 7mm piece of tissue on my cervix that could possibly have been my Baby but they wasn't sure they couldn't confirm anything for another 2 weeks. The sac had doubled in size from my last scan. In the end I didn't need to wait two weeks because I ended up in A&E 3 days later and scanned the next. The scan confirmed the sac had now collapsed and I had indeed had another miscarriage. I opted for a natural one so we could keep and bury him or her. Told to take a test 3 weeks later and if it was still positive let them know. It was positive albeit very faint, re tested again the following week and still the same. Went back for a scan and I still had 15mm of tissue left inside me, options of carry on, meds or d&c were given to me. By this point I'd been miscarrying for 5 weeks, didn't want a d&c in case it affected my chances of conceiving again. It took me 15 years to fall Pregnant the first time round so I opted for the tablets and passed Baby a couple of days later. We aren't sure if when I had a massive bleed I didn't pass it the first time round or we'd had a hidden twin that hadn't been picked up on the scans. I had a SCH so it's possible it may have hidden the second one and considering how strong all my tests were and how big I was even at 8 weeks it's possible
