Misdiagnosed miscarriage. Anyone suffered this?

Diagnosed MC but no symptoms?

I’m super confused right now. I am 12w and 2d.

Two weeks ago we arranged a private ultrasound for fun and saw our little bean with his heatbeat blasting away. He was difficult to find due to the position on my womb but he was definitely there. He measured slightly smaller than the date I had been given but he was definitely a baby. I then had a private gender blood screening done just after Xmas and they confirmed it was a boy.

Today I went for my routine NHS ultrasound. She spent about 2 minutes scanning my belly and said there was nothing there but an empty sac. I was then rushed to a quiet room and given my options to “speed up” the miscarriage. One nurse implored me to take the pill “right now to get it over with” or that they could book me for a d&c tomorrow morning. All this 5 minutes after being told I had miscarried.

I haven’t opted for anything yet, I’m just processing and I’ve booked a private scan again with the same provider as she was great and got me into all sorts of positions to get a look at the baby. It took a weird bent in half/sideways position to see him. My SO is devastated and confused because the foetus was definitely there and growing but now there is no sign?

I’ve had zero bleeding or pain, I look and feel more pregnant each day.

I’m not sure what I’m looking for here but has anyone experienced the same? It just doesn’t make sense to me. I would have understood if I had bled or passed something but I haven’t, I’ve checked very single time, so where has the foetus gone?! Just disappeared into thin air?!

I hope you are ok OP, sending you lots of prayers ❤️ .

Reading some of the comments here, I am just in shock. This whole process is so fragile and so unfair

SkyBlue20 · 06/01/2021 09:49
@SkyBlue20 I am not 'minimising' anything, I simply said I wasn't sure as I have a basic understanding of how human gestation works and how it's different from other animals which can reabsorb a developing fetus. I have checked this just now and in the case of a sac becoming emplty early in a pregnancy, the fetus has actually broken back down within the sac so effectively remains there until your next period. It's a common thing to happen and very heartbreaking but it's really best that we check the scienctific facts when talking about what actually happens.
I don't think this is the place for you to get all scientific about it tbh - the OP wanted experiences and advice, neither she nor any of us on here who have been through this care or want to know about the science behind it, all we know is what we were told and that we lost our babies. As I've mentioned in a previous post, it's nice to think that baby stays with you when it's reabsorbed, so thanks for ruining that for all of us.
If you want to discuss the science, maybe go and find or create a thread about that, don't jump on one where emotions are (quite rightly) heightened.

I hope you're ok, OP, and your scan this morning isn't too difficult xx

AwFeebs · 06/01/2021 09:53

Hope you're scan today gives you some answers OP.

tobeornottobe1 · 06/01/2021 14:27

Thinking of you today OP Thanks

Moo678 · 06/01/2021 14:48

Thinking of you OP.

I had a MMC picked up at my 12 wks scan. Had seen the heartbeat twice once at a private scan and once at an NHS one. Both times I was measuring about a week behind which, with retrospect didn’t fit with my positive test dates. The scanner immediately went to get a colleague to confirm things and like others have said we could still see the fetus. I was then given as much time as I needed to consider my options. I opted for surgery about a week later.

I really hope your scan today has given you better news Flowers

Littlebee1990 · 06/01/2021 14:55

Thinking of you today x

Mooey89 · 06/01/2021 15:22

Thinking of you today. Hope you get some clarity.

DueMay2021 · 06/01/2021 15:25

I hope you get some answers today. The way the hospital treated you sounds awful 😢. Thanks

2020wish · 06/01/2021 15:30

Any update today @Aerie2311

Aerie2311 · 06/01/2021 16:23

No misdiagnosis. Our LO was probably lost about 2 weeks ago. The private technician was very kind and tried for a long time in many positions but there was nothing to be seen.

I will be having my d&c tomorrow as I’ve already been heartbroken twice this week and can’t even fathom going through this naturally in a few weeks time. It seems my body decided he wasn’t meant for this world and took him back. I have still had no bleeding or cramping. It really is so cruel

Ahh I'm sorry. It's awful awful. I had this last January but was pregnant again in March successfully. You will get there. You're doing the right thing having the erpc. I think it's much easier

TenThousandSpoons0 · 06/01/2021 16:54

Sorry to hear that OP

tobeornottobe1 · 06/01/2021 17:03

So sorry to hear this OP,
Take care of yourself Thanks

PurplePansy05 · 06/01/2021 17:08

OP, you should have two scans on the NHS before you are given MC options. I would request a follow up in a week.

I had 3 MCs, two out of them were so called missed miscarriages (MMCs) whereby you have a miscarriage but no symptoms. I felt pregnant right until the moment of my medical management/MVA so symptoms can be very deceiving.

I also had a blighted ovum miscarriage whereby there was an empty sac, I felt pregnant throughout, no negative symptoms whatsoever, diagnosed at 13 weeks.

I think it would be odd if you saw a baby measuring 10 wks and then nothing, I've not heard of that before. It is possible with blighted ovum that the baby either doesn't develop at all or stops and is reabsorbed, but this would be unlikely with this size baby.

There are various options. Either the private sonographer got things completely wrong, it happens. Or the baby was missed at the NHS scan, that would be very unusual. Or it is indeed what NHS has told you, ie a missed miscarriage.

Personally I would choose a follow up NHS scan over any other private scans and indeed I would be requesting a second NHS scan before making any decisions. It's the norm to have at least two scans on the NHS before MC treatment.

Take care Flowers

PurplePansy05 · 06/01/2021 17:09

Oh OP I'm so sorry only just seen your update Flowers Sending you lots of love, I know how hard it is Flowers

bearlyactive · 06/01/2021 17:10

So sorry OP Flowers

SkyBlue20 · 06/01/2021 17:37

So sorry, OP, it's heartbreaking.

I hope your D&C goes smoothly tomorrow and you can begin to heal - it's a cliche but time is the only thing that can make the pain less raw, so nurture yourself however you need to in the meantime. I hope your journey from this point is straight forward and much less painful.

Sending lots of strength your way xx

Nat831 · 06/01/2021 18:08

I’m so sorry @Aerie2311 and hope tomorrow goes as smoothly as possible for you. I was really anxious about my surgery but it ended up being the right decision, and I was then able to gradually begin to heal...after testing positive on pregnancy tests for 6 weeks prior to my surgery, the week following I finally got a negative test as my hcg had dropped as needed. I thought this would never happen after such a long wait. Everyone’s experience is so unique and it’s incredibly shocking how many different ways women miscarry. I can only say from my own experience that speaking to good friends regularly and taking time off work, and just allowing myself to go through the grieving process at my own rate, has been helpful. Sending you a lot of virtual love x

TheDaydreamBelievers · 06/01/2021 20:08

@Aerie2311 I'm so sorry for your experience. I recently had MMC surgery (fetus died around 11 weeks, had surgery around 13) and whilst I was so sad it was procedural v straightforward.

For any other women with a similar experience - my MMC was verified by 2 sonographers. They told me that is correct practice when they think the fetus has died. They also told me one should be internal. I also asked for another scan pre surgery for my own peace of mind and they were happy to do so. This was all in the current context of covid.

LittleTiger007 · 06/01/2021 20:40

I’m so sorry @Aerie2311 Flowers

haidri · 18/01/2021 22:14

Hi guys, I'm a bit stuck.

So two weeks ago I was supposed to be 9 weeks & therefore had a private early reassurance scan (as I previously had a miscarriage 3months ago when I got to 12 weeks) and at the scan they dated me 6 weeks.

I had a NHS scan today due to me seeing browny discharge and they've dated me 6 weeks when I should be 11.

Am I having a missed miscarriage because they can see the sac but no embryo?

I'm confused!

Onestep2021 · 18/01/2021 22:27

Hi @haidri

That sounds stressful.
So 2 weeks ago they dated you at 6wks and then again today at 6wks?
What did the sonographer say today when you explained?

haidri · 18/01/2021 22:30

@Onestep2021 yeah so there's been no growth. They can see a sac and all but no embryo. She's called me in for a rescan in two weeks to see if there's growth but it doesn't take a genius to figure out I'm having a missed miscarriage if there's been no growth right?

PFin · 19/01/2021 05:30

So sorry to hear this. I defo wouldnt take any steps toward ending the possible pregnancy until you are 100% sure. The fact you and sonographer seen a heartbeat and everything for an NHS sonographer to say theres absolutely nothing there is absolutely bizzare! Take care of yourself and i hope all works out well, keep us informed if you can! Sending you love!

haidri · 23/01/2021 09:47

Just to update you guys... I had a blighted ovum. I'm devastated as this would've been a rainbow child after having a miscarriage in September. But I guess it's now two miscarriages in a row. Keep me in your prayers x
