Baby Name ? Controversial

I’ve just found out I’m expecting a baby girl. My partner and I plan on calling our little girl Rebel with the intention she will be Rebby for short after a very close friend. My family love the name and I was going to keep it a secret but my MIL found out my mum knew and pestered me to tell her. She hates the name (part of the reason I kind of didn’t want to tell her) and now I’m having second thoughts on a name we have loved for a long time. Is it such a bad name? She says people will just automatically assume ‘rebel’ as in troublemaker :(

@Flippingnightmare

I've literally just looked on the GMC Register and there are NO Dr Storms.
There are - there’s two. I think telling you how to find them would be against the guidelines but there are two.
Flippingnightmare · 27/12/2020 10:28

Ah yes, found them

SoupDragon · 27/12/2020 10:30

Why on earth would you do that and post about it? Slightly stalkerish.

DontWalkPastTheCastle · 27/12/2020 10:44

Yeah that's just weird Confused

Luckyelephant1 · 27/12/2020 10:57

She also said she's not practicing at the moment. You can come off the GMC register if you're taking a career break etc and then apply for a restoration when ready. Either way, bit stalkerish to check yeah.

I dont think Rebel is the worst name I've heard, at least it's a nice enough sounding word in itself. But because of it's meaning and potential to cause issues and eye rolling etc I'd keep it as a nickname or middle name. I think you can get away with very 'out there' middle names as they are barely used anyway.

According to Wiki not only is Rebel not Rebel Wilson's real name but one of her sisters goes by the nickname Annarchi and her brother goes by Ryot.

Aww, that's disappointing. I did know about her siblings' names (she's also got a sister called Liberty) so thought her parents were just a bit out there with naming. They're professional dog handlers so it seemed to fit.
FestiveStuffing · 27/12/2020 11:19

Rebel is her real name, btw. Just not her birth name. She changed it in 2001, apparently.

iguanadonna · 27/12/2020 11:19

Rebecca Isabel is an excellent solution! Gives her options.

She might well like being called Rebel, but she won't have to introduce herself as it if she doesn't want to.

Reba is nice too.

wowfudge · 27/12/2020 11:20

Eh? How does being a "bit out there" with naming have anything to do with being professional dog handlers?

ineedaholidaynow · 27/12/2020 11:23

@FestiveStuffing she had the choice to do that, wasn't forced on her by parents

I watched an interview where she spoke about her upbringing- it seemed very relaxed and free, very animal focussed, not really constrained by 'normal'. More relaxed somehow, I don't know. Just seemed to fit that they'd not feel they had to conform to other people's ideas when naming their kids.

Doesn't make it not her real name though. Some celebrities go by names that aren't their own, but Rebel Wilson isn't one of them. Figured I'd point out the distinction.

wowfudge · 27/12/2020 11:55

@FestiveStuffing - that explains why you thought that. Your other post made it sound as though professional dog handlers were a particular sub culture specialising in out there names for their kids Hmm.

Sitchervice · 27/12/2020 11:59

My best friend is no longer talking to me because she thinks my son will get bullied by the name Elend...

It's your baby you choose the name you want. Besides there are kids going to school with the name khaleesi so unusual names arnt that uncommon anymore.

icedaisy · 27/12/2020 12:01

But your friend I fear is correct, elend will be bullied.

SoupDragon · 27/12/2020 12:03

because she thinks my son will get bullied by the name Elend...

There are many threads on MN where grown adults take the piss out of people's names so yes, there is a very good chance. Sad but true.

Is that pronounced 'El-end'? As in, bellend without the b?
Sitchervice · 27/12/2020 12:12

@FestiveStuffing no it's said as El-
Und.
My sister spelt it as Eland so I might change the e to an a. An Eland is a stag.

Elend is an actual name. It means Dawn and I'm sticking to the name It's a lovely name. Besides whos to say whats going to happen in the future. I might home school. Schools might be smaller. And when there are kids going to school with the name William... Who's name can be shortaned to Willie/willy...

DivGirl · 27/12/2020 12:18

Elend may be a name but it rhymes with bellend and means misery in German. I mean - your child your choice but would you want to be called misery?

I think you'll be OK with El-und. I imagine PP read it as El-end and I can see why that would raise a few eyebrows!

FestiveStuffing · 27/12/2020 12:20

I'd definitely spell it Eland, if I were you.

Badoukas · 27/12/2020 12:20

It's a good name for big unruly beast of a dog.

porcelinaofthevastoceanss · 27/12/2020 12:21

There are so many lovely girls names out there - unusual ones too. Rebel is a comedy name. Your daughter won’t thank you.
