Baby Name ? Controversial

I’ve just found out I’m expecting a baby girl. My partner and I plan on calling our little girl Rebel with the intention she will be Rebby for short after a very close friend. My family love the name and I was going to keep it a secret but my MIL found out my mum knew and pestered me to tell her. She hates the name (part of the reason I kind of didn’t want to tell her) and now I’m having second thoughts on a name we have loved for a long time. Is it such a bad name? She says people will just automatically assume ‘rebel’ as in troublemaker :(

Not an attempt at thread policing but out of genuine curiosity - I’m seeing increasing numbers of baby name threads in Pregnancy. Has Baby Names got itself such a reputation that it is driving folk away?!

@DivGirl

Elend may be a name but it rhymes with bellend and means misery in German. I mean - your child your choice but would you want to be called misery?
Same reason as why I didn’t call my daughter Mallory. Love the name but it translates as misery/unhappiness in French I believe, and whilst other people may not know that, I do and I couldn’t get past it.
Sitchervice · 27/12/2020 12:24

@DivGirl Elend means Dawn or Day break. Its a English-Kurdish name.

And I'm English not German.

lockedownloretta · 27/12/2020 12:28

B-elend

You are to all intents and purpises sending a child out onto the world, with a name that most people will look at and think 'bellend"

EssentialHummus · 27/12/2020 12:32

sitch obviously you will do as you see fit (or have done, sorry, I am not clear on whether your baby is here or not yet) but this is one of those times when several hundred people are reading and thinking “No, don’t, bad idea”.

Marchitectmummy · 27/12/2020 12:34

I think the main issue with the name is Rebel Wilson already has the name, so it looks like a copy of a one off name. So while unusual had a strong connection to a very famous person.

Gosh - why would you want to call a child this?

You might as well call her Stroppy or Bolshie.

Or even, as a contrast, Conformist or Teacher's Pet.

I think it would be unwise to saddle a child with this.

Apart from anything, Rebel wilson has made a living from being coarse and I wouldn't want that connection to my child. As welll as it being a silly name.

Sitchervice · 27/12/2020 12:41

@EssentialHummus

My husband (who is the one pushing the spelling Elend)
Dosnt seem to think there is an issue. But has agreed to change the spelling to Eland to prevent the connection.

RoseMartha · 27/12/2020 12:42

I think it is awful. I dont think it has a positive meaning. To me it is not a name for a person. A cat or dog maybe.
I also think it might provoke bullying at school and constantly having to explain why she was called that.

Yes but this would be like a French person saying “Rebel means snowy day” when in English it means defiant. Baby name sites can spout whatever nonsense they want. It is a real word in German. What if your child wants to move to a German speaking country? Then their name will actually be misery. It can “mean” whatever it wants in Kurdish.

And an Eland isn’t a stag. An Eland is a big slow Antelope. But a better name than misery.

Sitchervice · 27/12/2020 12:49

@FestiveStuffing

I agree. We've changed the Spelling to Eland. Has a different meaning. It means one from the Meadows.

Toddlerteaplease · 27/12/2020 12:51

No no no. I came across a baby called Rogue once. Don't do it to your child.

Sitchervice · 27/12/2020 12:51

@DivGirl well I think I'm going to stick to Eland. I think I'll have less problems.

It was my Aunt who said it was a stag. Maybe she ment a male Antalope.
-shrug-

MaryShelley1818 · 27/12/2020 12:56

What are people thinking with names...why you'd want your baby to have such horrible negative connotations is beyond me, especially one where people will be laughing at them.
Rebel is hideous as well as B-Elend!

DivGirl · 27/12/2020 12:56

Not a male antelope. It’s a type of antelope. Honestly just google it.

Sitchervice · 27/12/2020 12:58

@MaryShelley1818

I've decided to change the spelling. Eland.

2021Mum · 27/12/2020 12:59

@Flippingnightmare

I've literally just looked on the GMC Register and there are NO Dr Storms.
Thank you for stalking me but if you see in one of my previous posts I’m a qualified doctor but not practicing, therefore am not on the GMC register at the moment...but thank you for taking the time to try and work out who I am.

Eland just makes me think of Leeds United's ground, Elland Road.

There was a thread about a year ago where a parent was considering calling their child Rogue. The suggestion went down a storm as I recollect.

GreekOddess · 27/12/2020 13:00

I think it's awful personally.

dottiedodah · 27/12/2020 13:00

I like unusual names really.I would automatically think of Rebel Wilson though .If you like it go for it .Never told anyone my DS name after going through so many names for oldest DS with my own DP!
